Combustion of AlkanesIn sufficient air or oxygen alkanes burn exothermically
producing CO2 & H2O - complete combustion
Examples
CH4 + ....O2 CO2 + 2H2O
C4H10 + O2 ....CO2 + .....H2O......
OR ..C4H10 + ....O2 ...CO2 + .....H2O
In insufficient oxygen (air) incomplete combustion occurs with the formation of carbon monoxide, CO.
e.g petrol vapour (octane)
C8H18 + .....O2 .....CO + ....H2O
What is the problem associated with carbon monoxide?

Examples
CH4 + 2O2 CO2 + 2H2O
C4H10 + O2 4CO2 + 5H2O6½
OR 2C4H10 + 13O2 8CO2 + 10H2O
In insufficient oxygen (air) incomplete combustion occurs with the formation of carbon monoxide, CO.
e.g petrol vapour (octane)
C8H18 + 8½O2 8CO + 9H2O
What is the problem associated with carbon monoxide?
