Combustion of AlkanesIn sufficient air or oxygen alkanes burn exothermically

producing CO2 & H2O - complete combustion

Examples

CH4 + ....O2 CO2 + 2H2O

C4H10 + O2 ....CO2 + .....H2O......

OR ..C4H10 + ....O2 ...CO2 + .....H2O

In insufficient oxygen (air) incomplete combustion occurs with the formation of carbon monoxide, CO.

e.g petrol vapour (octane)

C8H18 + .....O2 .....CO + ....H2O

What is the problem associated with carbon monoxide?

Examples

CH4 + 2O2 CO2 + 2H2O

C4H10 + O2 4CO2 + 5H2O6½

OR 2C4H10 + 13O2 8CO2 + 10H2O

In insufficient oxygen (air) incomplete combustion occurs with the formation of carbon monoxide, CO.

e.g petrol vapour (octane)

C8H18 + 8½O2 8CO + 9H2O

What is the problem associated with carbon monoxide?

During incomplete combustion of petrol many atmospheric pollutants are obtained

Oxides of nitrogen, ...... and NO... (NOx)

INCOMPLETE COMBUSTION OF PETROL

Formed by direct combination of ....2 with ....2

Toxic and acidic

CO – incomplete ..............................of petrol

Unburned hydrocarbons – from petrol

Lead – from leaded petrol

Lead has been removed from petrol. Why?

Convert harmful atmosphericpollutants into harmless gases.

Consists of honeycomb ceramic support coated with a fine powder of ................., palladium and rhodium .

Three different reactions occur.

2CO + 2NO .....2 + .......2

.....CO + O2 ......CO2

C8H18 + 25NO 8CO2 + 12½N2 + 9H20

CO2 can be considered to be an atmospheric pollutant. Why?
