Introduction
The process of burning of substances in air or oxygen with the evolution of heat and light is known as
combustion
COMBUSTIBLE SUBSTANCE
A substance that burns in air or oxygen to produce heat and light is called combustible substance
Example- paper and wood
NON- COMBUSTIBLE SUBSTANCE
A substance that does not burn in or oxygen is called non-combustible substance Example – stone and metal
Conditions Necessary for combustion
Presence of combustible substance
Presence of supporter of combustion
Heating the combustible substance to its ignition
temperature
Rapid combustion SpontaneousCombustion Explosion
Types of Combustion
Methods of extinguishing Fire
Removing the
combustible
substance
Cooling the
substance below its ignition
temperature
Cutting off air supply
Fuels
Solid Fuel- coal and WoodLiquid Fuel- Kerosene and PetrolGaseous Fuel-coal gas and Biogas
Characteristics of goodfuel
Have low ignition
temperatureHigh
Calorific Value
Has a moderate
rate of combustion
Safe to store ,handle
and transport
Does not cause
pollution
Leaves behind little
or no residue
after being burnt
Is cheap and easily available
Fire Extinguisher
The simplest fire extinguisher is soda –acid type dire extinguisherAnother type of fire extinguisher which contains carbon dioxide when open spread on fire and extinguish it.
Parts of soda acid typeFire extinguisher
The parts are as follows:-The container
Bottle
Knob
Structure of soda acid type
fire Extinguisher
The container of fire extinguisher is cylindrical in shape It contains sodium bicarbonate solution The small bottle contains sulphuric acid. The bottle attached to knob.
How it works ?
For chemical reaction to take place, the knob is
struck . The bottle breaks and sulphuric acid reacts with sodium bicarbonate
liberating large amount of co2 gas
