FRIT 7134 – Spring 2010

Description of Site and Learners

The location of my school, Roan Elementary School is in a highly Hispanic

populated area and an extremely low socio-economic community in Dalton,

Georgia. There are six elementary schools, one middle school and two high

schools in the Dalton City School System. Roan Elementary School is Title I

funded and was recognized last year as being a Distinguished School for making

AYP for ten years in a row. Roan is actually celebrating its 40th year of existence

this year! As of today, our enrollment is 450 students, PK through 5th grade. Our

student population is 86% Hispanic, 4% Caucasian, 4% African American, 2%

Asian and 4% Mixed. All students qualify for free lunch. There are 43 certified

teachers, 2 administrators, and 16 classified staff members. This information

was obtained from the school’s data entry clerk.

Our Media Center is one of the first rooms one sees upon entering our

building. It houses around 17, 500 books, which gives us around 39 books per

student, which is one of the highest in the district. There are professional and

student magazines, over 900 audiovisual titles, 7 student computers, and a

multimedia room in the rear for closed circuit channels and morning broadcasts

by students.

There are three grade levels that focus in on the chosen standards related

to Electricity and Magnetism, 1st grade, 3rd grade and 5th grade. We have 3

classes in 1st grade with a total of 61 students. There are 4 classes in 3rd grade

with a total of 75 students and 2 classes in 5th grade with 50 students. The

demographic breakdown is as follows:

Our school uses a framework for Literacy called Literacy Collaborative and

our students’ reading levels are based on the Fountas and Pinnell Reading

Levels. Our first graders’ reading levels vary from Level Pre-A to Level J. Our

third graders’ reading levels range from Level J to Q, with the exceptions of our

Non English Speakers who are currently on Level A and one of the girls has

progressed to a Level C. Our fifth graders are reading from Levels R to V.

Therefore, considerations for different materials with this collection and

development plan will cover a broad range of reading levels, especially with the

non-fiction selections.

Our ELL department has changed this year as to how they are serving our

ELL children. This year the ELL teachers are focusing on content standards

when working with the ELL students. The ELL teachers have been searching for

and using resources from our library that haven’t been checked out as much in

the past. Therefore, we have found several areas in regards to our state

standards that we are lacking in materials. One of those areas is Electricity and

Magnetism in Science.

Curriculum Review

For this collection and development project, I have chosen to focus on

Electricity and Magnets, which is covered in three different grade levels, 1st, 3rd,

and 5th grades. The following standards are addressed within this topic:

S1P2. Students will demonstrate effects of magnets on other magnets and other objects. a. Demonstrate how magnets attract and repel. b. Identify common objects that are attracted to a magnet. c. Identify objects and materials (air, water, wood, paper, your hand, etc.) that do not block magnetic force.

S3P2. Students will investigate magnets and how they affect other magnets and common objects. a. Investigate to find common objects that are attracted to magnets. b. Investigate how magnets attract and repel each other.

S5P3. Students will investigate the electricity, magnetism, and their relationship. a. Investigate static electricity. b. Determine the necessary components for completing an electric circuit. c. Investigate common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity. d. Compare a bar magnet to an electromagnet.

SS5H3 The student will describe how life changed in America at the turn of the century. b. Describe the impact on American life of Thomas Edison (electricity).

Summary of Collection Needs:

Budget Summary

There was quite a bit of research involved in this Collection and

Development Plan for Electricity and Magnetism. I researched the newest titles

in these topic areas from several different resource vendors. I also relied heavily

on the state frameworks that provide specific titles and resources that teachers

should use when teaching these subjects.

Based on the needs of our library and the population of our current

students, I feel that I have created an order that would greatly benefit and assist

our teachers and especially our students in learning all about Electricity and

Magnetism. There are titles covering electricity, magnetism, important people in

history related to these topics and hands-on resources for teachers and students.

My proposed budget is a total of $.

While researching for appropriate purchases, I have also created a

webpage with many different online links and resources for students and

teachers. www.glogster.skltoy.com The attached Excel spreadsheet includes the

list of titles for purchase.
