LENGTHThe length of a short film is usually between 3 to 20 minutes, but can go up to 30 minutes. If any longer then it would be called a ‘feature film’.

STORYLINEStorylines are generally simple and easy to follow. Based over a short period of time. Because time is condensed there is usually limited dialogue. Most short films have a moral to the story, for example in the short film ‘Strangers’, the two main characters are a Jewish man and a Palestinian man, who don’t speak but they don’t like each other. When they get into a bit of trouble on a tube, they have to work together to escape, which shows that people are people and sometimes the conflict between a group of people doesn’t always matter.

CHARACTERSIn short films there is typically 1 to 3 main characters, as they don’t have time to create back stories/history for characters. This also allows the audience to relate to these characters as they are not shown lots of information or new people.

TWISTThere is commonly a twist in short films, but this isn't an essential convention for short films. This twist can tell a short story in an interesting and creative way which makes the audience engaged. For example, in the short film ‘The Black Hole’, the twist is how a black hole on paper is actually real, and he takes advantage of it but take it too far.

BUDGETThe budget of a short film is usually low, based on the fact that most are independent, sticking to one or two locations and using a low amount of actors. This also however gives the film a more arty feel. For example, ‘The Black Hole’ is in one location and only has 1 actor in it, meaning it has a very low budget.
