These magazine adverts are both from Mumford and sons. They are both very alike is certain aspects. They both have a ‘classic’ look to them. The adverts both are showing this classic look in similar ways. The left hand side one is using a layer over the camera to make it look country like and the right hand side is using a medieval painting style and this brings more emphasis on the band being ‘country’ and ‘folk’.

The posters also have a conventions throughout with promoting the band heavily. They are both introducing a thought into your head about them. The left poster is advertising there new album and also the songs on this album, as these are what is its main selling point. The right poster is advertising the tour dates so that people book tickets, both of these adverts areadvertising heavily on the music and not using tactics like using lots of bright colours to attract you, instead the music does this for them.

The adverts are also very basic on colours. The colours are not bold instead they work well with what is being shown and do not jump from the page. The colours are basic and links with the band of ‘working’ and ‘folk’ which would mean they would not use very bold colours.

The style works well with the audience because this style is used throughout the bands music videos also so if you carry it on, you will have an audience which instantly recognises them from seeing this style. These would also be put into a magazine which would have several different audiences such as NME so that it gets the best target audience.

These are completely different from the folk genre band Mumford and sons. These adverts are both from Katy Perry and as you can see, they are much more staged,. The photos do not have a ‘natural’ feel to them, instead they are like a dream world with the pink hair.

The adverts also have lots of bold colours unlike the Mumford and sons adverts. It is like the company who represent Katy Perry are trying to sell her music by making it bold and very bright. This does attract the audience but it may not at the same time because it may feel ‘cheap’ or ‘cheesy’.

The two types of adverts do connect in one way though. They are trying heavily to sell their albums or tour dates. The adverts both have a main focus on the band/artist also which makes you instantly know who it is and implants it to your memory. They react to their separate audiences as if you used the Mumford and sons style of advertising in a pop band, it may not work as well as what Katy Perry’s style would and vice versa.

These link with the audiences though because Katy Perry uses the ‘dream’ like worlds in her music videos such as ‘California girls’ and the target audience is also very large in age range. It caters for all the audience and works for her style. It would also be put in a magazine with several audiences as this would benefit the artist best.

Adverts in magazines are always aimed at a target audience and both these examples do this well, In different ways. One thing they both do though and that is to sell albums or tour dates out. They do this because that is their main purpose, they attract the audience with its style and then try to sell something to them.
