Page 2: Coastal Management Team Task

Lesson Starter

• Name 3 different ways the coast is being protected from erosion

• Then write a sentence to describe how each one works

Page 3: Coastal Management Team Task

Lesson Intentions

To find out about the different types of defence techniques used to protect the coast

To gain a fuller understanding of the various pros and cons of the different coastal management techniques

Page 4: Coastal Management Team Task

The presentation needs toinclude the following

• An introduction to the technique (is it hard or soft, holding, advancing or retreating the line?

• A model of your technique

• An annotated photo(s) of the technique

• An annotated diagram with information about how the technique works to protect the coast.

• Information about the cost of the technique.

• How long will it last? How durable is it?

• A summary of the pros and cons of the technique.

Hard & Soft Management Techniques

• Hard techniques are usually solid structures that change the natural appearance of the coast appreciably.

• Soft techniques mostly blend in with the natural landscape. They do not significantly alter the natural appearance of the coast.

Holding, Advancing or Retreating

• If you hold the line you neither extend it into the sea or allow it to retreat back into the land. You protect it so that it remains where it is.

• When techniques advance the line they effectively create new land (perhaps beach) out into the sea.

• Coastal management techniques sometimes cause the coastline to retreat. This means a decision has been made to allow the coastline to erode, although this will be managed carefully so that people are not put at risk.

Time ScaleRest of this lesson and Friday’s lesson

This week’s homework

Presentations laid out in the room – Friday first week after half term

So no excuses for not being ready

Need to plan time carefully in your teams

Each team plan for 10 minutes (piece of paper to map out ideas)

Friday 6 November

Each member of the class will walk round with a check sheet and add notes so that they develop an understanding of all 7 techniques

Each student will also score the presentation on a scale of 1 to 3 where 1 is poor, 2 is good and 3 is excellent

Scoring the Presentations

1. Poor – perhaps too little detail to really understand the technique and/or some errors. Also possible that some tasks missing and there may be a notable imbalance between the advantages and disadvantages. It may be poorly presented. Should have some information on cost and durability.

2. Good – almost all tasks completed accurately, though one or two may lack some detail. Includes a clear idea of both advantages and disadvantages. Good presentation. Helpful model and/or detailed annotations on photo and diagram as well as some idea of cost and durability.

3. Excellent – very detailed with almost all parts very well presented and accurate. High quality model and/or well drawn diagrams with detailed and helpful annotation that explains the technique fully. Also likely to include appropriate photos. A detailed and balanced list of advantages and disadvantages. Will also include details of cost and durability.
