Day 4 ASSURE Method

Analyze Learners:

The 22 learners are 10th grade students in a Biology course at a fairly rural high school. Two-thirds of the class are girls. Five of the students have mild attention-deficit disorders and two of them are talented and gifted. Eleven of the students are visual learners, five are audio learners, and eight are tactile kinesthetic learners. Many of the students dislike science and have no motivation in the class.

State Objectives:

Students will create a graph of the class’s proteome by surveying each other’s genetic traits after learning how genes code for proteins through a virtual lab at home with 80% accuracy by the end of the class period.

Select Methods, Media, and Materials:

Flipped Classroom approach with the content given to be studied at home and the “lab” portion done in class

QR code linking to the online virtual lab for homework Hard copy of homework for students without internet access at home Genetic traits survey

Utilize Media and Materials:

The QR code will be posted in class the previous day for students to scan as well as the optional hard copy of the homework. In class, each student will be given a hard copy list of genetic traits and questions to survey their classmates.

Require Learner Participation:

Each student will have to choose whether to complete the homework assignment, but it is for a grade so they should be more motivated to actually do it. All of the students will (hopefully) be asking and answering questions and making observations of each other during class about genetic traits.

Evaluate and Revise:

The students will be assessed at the end of the virtual lab with a quiz. They will be asked to take a screen shot of their score and email it to me if they want a grade. Then, in class, I will evaluate the students on their participation in the survey and contribution to the graph. The

beginning of class will serve as a time of revision to review the material in the online homework and answer any questions.
