Common Types of Lifestyle-related Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs)
A cardiovascular disease is an illness or disorder that affects the heart and blood vessels
1. Stroke
A condition caused by a sudden interference of blood flow through the brain, rupture of the wall of an artery in the brain brought out by high blood pressure and when there is a formation of blood clot in the arteries of the brain
Without the oxygen and nutrients carried by the blood, the brain cells die
2. High Blood Pressure The force that is made by blood pushing
against the walls of the arteries and veins within the body
The heart creates this pressure as it pumps blood
Each time the heart beats, it pushes blood out into the arteries, which then carry the blood to every part of the body
Other causes are obesity, heredity, stress, and smoking
3. Arteriosclerosis
Hardening of the arteries Hypertension is a major factor in the
development of arteriosclerosis Another factor in the development of
arteriosclerosis are: Diabetes Overeating especially of eggs,
butter, cream, and fatty foods, infectious diseases, overweight, excessive nerve stress
4. Heart Attack
Is usually caused by coronary heart disease.
Coronary heart disease refers to a blockage of the coronary arteries-those arteries supplying the tissue of the heart with blood
The blockage may be due to fatty deposits or a blood clot
Strikes suddenly whether a person is resting, eating, and even sleeping
Suggestions to prevent cardiovascular disease
Do not smoke Do a regular blood pressure checkup Reduce the amount of high cholesterol
foods in your diet Eat more fish, fresh fruits, and
vegetables Avoid salty foods Exercise regularly at least 15 minutes
aerobics to improve blood circulation Maintain ideal weight Learn to manage stress
5. Skin Cancer
Most common type of cancer The major cause is too much
exposure to sun’s ultraviolet radiation
6. Lung Cancer
Often difficult to detect early because symptoms do not appear until the disease is quite advanced
Symptoms include a persistent cough, chest pain, and repeated attacks of pneumonia and bronchitis
7. Leukemia
Cancer of the blood-forming tissues and is the most common form of cancer inn children
Causes millions of abnormal and immature white blood cells to be released into the blood system
8. Colon and Rectal Cancer Are the second most common type
of fatal cancer, after lung cancer Warning signs include bleeding from
the rectum, blood in the stool, and changes in bowel habits
