Contemporary Foundations of Reading: Research PerspectiveNova University Summer 2015
Dr. Melinda Prague
Course Description
• This course will familiarize students with current research-based theories of learning related to reading at the elementary and secondary level.
• There will be an emphasis on differentiating instruction to meet the needs of students from varying cultures, and those with special needs and varying learning styles.
• Practical application of the theories will be addressed.
Course Rationale
Because children of the same age are not alike when it comes to learning, it is imperative that teachers learn to address their differences by providing multiple options for presenting information and helping children make sense of what they learn (Tomlinson, 2001). In many classrooms, although there are diverse learners, there is just one approach to teaching and there is no differentiation.
Objectives
By the end of this course, the Candidate will be able to:1) Differentiate instruction for all kinds of learners2) Apply theories related to differentiated instruction
in the development of lessons plans3) Identify environments that provide a positive
learning experience that support the intellectual, personal and social development of diverse students.
4) Integrate Common Core Standards in discussions about reading strategies and in lesson planning.
