Casual or core – which are you?

Find out what sort of gamer you are by filling in this table. Look at the criteria for a core gamer answer yes or no to the question and then support your response with an example of how you consume you games – use specific games and experiences.

CORE CRITERIA YES/NO EVIDENCE Technologically savvy – can you hook your console to the net easily or upgrade your PC?

YES My Console is connected to the internet, my PC has been upgraded slightly (RAM upgrade).

Have the latest high-end computers/consoles – which consoles/formats do you own?

NO I own an Xbox 360, but not a gaming PC (I have a Mac).

Willingness to pay to play – how much would you invest in a new game or console?

YES To an extend, will not pay double for a limited edition games etc, however will spend some money an Xbox Live Account

Prefer violent/action games – are you more Bioshock than Angry Birds?

YES I mainly play more violent games than child-friendly games.

Prefer games that have depth and complexity – do you like a challenge?

YES I like a game to be hard enough that it is too easy, but not too hard that I get frustrated.

Play games over many long sessions – long haul or short bursts?

NO 1-2 hours max each session, or I generally get bored.

Hunger for gaming-related information – do you use game related website or read game magazines?

NO I don’t look into games or read gaming articles.

Discuss games with friends/bulletin boards – is this a common topic of conversation with your on and offline friends?

NO Occasionally talk about games with friends, but not a common topic.

Play for the exhilaration of defeating (or completing) the game – do you try to play to completion?

YES I like to play a game to complete it, but I don’t like to rush through it.

Much more tolerant of frustration – how long do you give a game if it’s hard to play?

YES I occasionally get angry at a game, but most of the time I’m relaxed when I play games.

Engaged in competition with themselves, the game, and other players – do you strive to get the high-scores and be the best?

NO Not really, level/score doesn’t matter much to me.

HARDORE OR CASUAL?

In between, I’m more of a hardcore gamer compared to other people, but much less than others. I’d say Casual.
