What is BYOD?

• BYOD is an acronym for Bring Your Own Device.

• This can be a privately owned laptop, tablet computing device, netbook, notebook, e-Reader, iPod Touch, iPad, or smartphone.

Why BYOD?• Our students are now living in a digital world where information is available and

generated at their fingertips. Access to web tools and resources will be a vital part of their education as they learn how to use

these resources appropriately and effectively.

What Platform will I use?

• The platform used at our school supports laptops/desktops using Windows and Microsoft office, apple products using iOS, and Android devices. The school is equipped with wireless access for all classrooms. Evernote will be used in the classroom because it is accessible from multiple platforms such as laptops, desktop computers, smartphones, tablets, and iPads/iPods.

Which mobile devices are allowed?

• Any Internet enabled device that can connect to our school’s/district’s wireless network

• These devices may include, but are not limited to:• iPod Touch

• iPad

• other tablet computing devices

• smartphones

• laptops

• netbook

• e-Readers

How will I group students?

•Students will be grouped based on their ability levels, student learing preferences,

and learning styles.

How will mobile devices be used in the classroom?

• Research

• Projects

• Response device for formative assessments

• Collaboration

• Presentations

• Communication

• Other instructional and school related purposes

What is the expectation for use of mobile devices in my classroom?

• You as the teacher determine when use of mobile devices is appropriate and allowed within your classroom.

• Students are responsible for their own mobile devices.

• Teachers are expected to read and abide by the Responsible Use Agreement.

• Teachers may also use their own devices during the school day.

What if a child doesn’t have a device to bring to school?

If a student does not have access to a personal device, they may

• Collaborate with other students who have devices

• Check out devices from the teacher or media center, which is equipped with 3 iPad carts, 2 laptop carts, and 3 netbook carts.

• Receive a hard copy of the information that is presented.

What are some of the other guidelines in place for students?

• For classes where the teacher has opted to use a social media site for communication and/or assignments, the only approved social media site for the CCPS BYOD program is Edmodo.

• No device, personal or otherwise, may be used to record, store, or transmit any type of image, sound or video from CCPS, except for approved projects and with the express permission of the teacher.

Apps to be Used

• Edmodo: connect socially with students and allow collaboration to help them learn content.

• Rocket Math: Provides students with an arcade experience in which they play math games and complete problem solving missions while learning to master national and state math standards.

• Basic Math: A no frills app that teaches math facts.  Even though this app does not have a lot of frills, it is a class favorite.  Choose any operation, any difficulty, and any number of questions.  Students will have a blast trying to beat their previous high scores.  This was one of my first apps and continues to be one of the most used.

• Common Core Standards: The Common Core Standards app has been a great reference to easily read and understand the core content standards in the areas of Mathematics and Language Arts.  This app includes standards for grades K-12 and are integrated & synthesized with corresponding college and career readiness standards.

• Splash Math: Provides practice and quizzes for students to practice math facts.

• Mathcubes: A fantastic app so that your children enjoy and learn Maths in an entertaining and fun way. You will see how in a short amount of time they will control numbers and solve sums and subtractions without hardly making an effort. They will surprise you!
