EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

For the final assignment for Introduction To Business module, students are required to run a

mock business venture and gain relevant practical experience through a charity drive event. In a

group of 5 people, we as the students are required to decide what products or services we need

to sell to raise funds. We are required to donate all the profit gained from the charity drive to a

chosen charity organization for charity purposes. After discussing among the group members, we

decided to help children around the world through World Vision Malaysia. We decided to raise a

total amount of RM3000 to help the children. Besides raising funds through sales, we are

recommended to find sponsors to support our event.

This charity drive event is a true practical experience of the management and marketing

strategy that we have learnt in class. Those theoretical theories are useless if they are not

applied and practiced in real life. In this report, we will be discussing what and how we made

important decision for this event. We will be discussing our objectives for this event, our target

market and competitors analysis, what ways we used to promote our products, sponsors, green

measures to the environment, human resources planning and the results we gained from this

charity drive in this report.

OBJECTIVES

We had decided to support World Vision through this charity drive. World Vision is an

international Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to work with children, families and

communities worldwide to overcome extreme poverty and injustice. This organization serves all

people in need, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender. All our funds will be donated to

“Together for Every Child Fund” where all funds raised will be used to provide clean water, health

service and education to children and communities in need around the world.

The reason why we chose this organization is because poverty has been one of the longest

problems this world is facing. Through this organization, World Vision, they will provide help to

these people around the world by providing foods, clean water, and other basic needs. We hope

we can help these people, especially children through this organization as they are the backbone

of  the country in the future.

We are aiming to donate RM 3000.00 to this organization through this charity drive, we hope

we can help those in need around the world and ease their burden. We are targeting to raise

funds around RM1500 through our sales and RM1500 from donation and sponsors.

TARGET MARKET

After conducting a market testing by selling our products before the actual charity drive event,

we found that college students are more likely to buy our products when they are aware of the

fact that we are raising funds for charity to help children through World Vision Malaysia.

College students and office staffs are our target customers since we are selling our products

around the campus. The majority of college students and staffs who study and work at Taylor’s

University are Chinese, followed by Malay, and then Indian. We decided to sell Halal products to

fulfill all the market needs. Our customers are middle and upper stage of socioeconomics scale

which they are financially stable. Their spending power is quite good as they have their pocket

money and salary to spend. Most of the students who study at Taylor’s University are quite

generous where they can afford to buy expensive products which are sold outside the campus.

We decided to sell products and services which are beneficial to the customers. The main

marketing message for this charity drive is “Save A Life” which bring the message of saving a life

by taking a good care of their health. Students and staffs at Taylor’s University are having a tight

schedule every day, we decided to sell Onigiri as our main product of this charity drive event

because we understand that people need to eat to kick hunger. We hope everyone can have a

better level of health in order to live longer and happy.

COMPETITION ANALYSIS

The two main competitors for our group are Choo’s group who is selling onigiri as their products

and Erica Chin’s group who is doing a henna service.

Competitor 1: The Only Onigiri (Choo’s group)

The Only Onigiri is the only group that sells the same products, onigiri as us. Both of us are

selling onigiri at the same price, the main reason why they are more popular is because they

have a large amount of onigiri to sell compared to us although we have more variety of flavours

than them. They have implemented a powerful promotional tool through their name, The Only

Onigiri which gives the customers an impression of they are the only one who control and sell

onigiri in the market. Besides that, they are active in promoting their product on Facebook and

Instagram.

Competitor 2: Erica Chin’s group

Erica Chin and her group members are doing a henna service which has attracted many

customers especially girls. Since Day 1 of the charity drive, a lot of people come to their stall and

do the henna. This is because the customers can choose their own desire designs and the price

of this service is quite affordable. This causes our temporary tattoos stickers have less attraction

to the customers.

PRODUCT & PACKAGING

After conducting a group discussion, we decided to sell cactus, onigiri, temporary tattoo stickers

and body scan analysis during the charity drive. After we have found a supplier for the cactus, the

supplier suggested us to sell carnation flowers before the actual charity drive week as the

Mother’s Day was just around the corner during that time. In the end, we sell flowers, cactus,

onigiri, temporary tattoo stickers and body scan analysis to raise our funds.

Carnation Flowers

We sold carnation flowers before the actual charity drive which was a few days before the

Mother’s Day. Carnation flowers are widely used to express love, fascination and distinction

during Mother’s Day. We bought the flowers from the wholesale shop and we packed them one

by one by ourselves which are cheaper and low cost than those flowers that packed and sold at

the florist shops. The flowers are packed with a transparent plastic cover and tied with ribbon

which allows the customers to choose their own desire bouquet.

Cactus

We sold small cactus during the charity drive because small cactus are easy to handle and take

care compared with other plants. Cactus can be placed near the electronic devices to reduce the

radiation emitted from computers and laptops which most of us are spending our time with. Each

cactus is placed in a small pot and displayed on the table to allow the customers to choose their

desire pattern.

Temporary Tattoo Stickers

Temporary tattoo sticker is specially designed for those who love tattoo but do not wish to get the

permanent ink on them. A temporary tattoo is more fun than the permanent tattoo as customers

can change the design as they like, anytime. We provided various designs to the customers for

them to choose. We placed the tattoos in a clear file which allows the customers to view it easily

by flipping through it.

Onigiri

Onigiri is a Japanese food which is made from white rice filled with some ingredients and

wrapped with seaweed. Onigiri can be consumed as breakfast, lunch, snack or even dinner.

Onigiri is the best ideal food for those who are rushing for their work and need to fill their stomach

at the same time. Due to the convenience of the customers, onigiri is fully sealed by the supplier

so that the customer can just grab, pay then leave and the best thing is, this only requires a very

little time as the customers always hurry to go to classes and work. Onigiri is packed with a

plastic cover for hygiene purpose.

Body Scan Analysis

We provided a body scan analysis for our customers during the charity drive. Body scan analysis

will show the health status such as the bone mass, water percentage in the body, muscle mass,

body fat, physical rating, metabolism and cholesterol of a person. We provided this service to the

customers with the purpose of giving awareness to the customers about their level of health and

also to remind them to take care of their health.

Most of our products are quite popular for this market as our products bring benefits and are

convenience to the customers. Although our products are popular, we decided to set an average

selling price which can be afforded by college students, staffs and lecturers to fulfill the market’s

needs.

Onigiri and cactus are the two fastselling products during the first few days. We decided to

order more flavours of onigiri for the next few days but maintained the amount we ordered as we

were afraid we would be unable to sell it off as expected. We ordered two trays of cactus before

the charity drive and it almost sold out during the second day. We decided not to order cactuses

anymore due to the short time of period because apparently we could only get the cactus by

Wednesday night and we only have two more days; Thursday and Friday to sell it off.

Temporary tattoo stickers and body scan analysis are facing low demands in this market as

there are competitors in this market and some of the customers are afraid to check their health

status because they do not wish to know their current body weight. We had implemented the

strategy of clearance sales for the tattoo stickers on Wednesday onwards and the responses

were quite good after that. We had a special discount for the body scan analysis on Wednesday

and we decided to provide free body scale analysis on Thursday as we already achieved our

target and we would like to contribute to the society by giving awareness about their health status

so that everyone can have a better lifestyle.

PROMOTION

A good promotional strategy plays an important role in promoting our products and services to

attract customers. The promotion is not only in term of pricing but also involves the way of

communicating the products to the public. Our main marketing message is “Save A Life” which

inspired by Together For Every Child Fund which helps children and communities in need around

the world by providing them basic needs. We came out with this marketing message because we

want the public to help those in need especially children and as a result they can indirectly save a

life.

We used Instagram and facetoface communication to promote our products for this charity

drive event. We decided to use Instagram as our channel to promote our products is mainly due

to the reason of public especially teenagers are spending most of their time on the social media

networks. We used Instagram instead of Facebook because the popularity of Instagram is

gradually increasing and becoming more popular nowadays. Besides that, we also used

facetoface communication by approaching our customers. We communicated with the

customers who pass by our booth and asked them if they are interested to buy our products or

donated some money. We also approached our potential customers by walking around the

campus to sell our onigiri and ask for donation at different times.

We provided free full body scan analysis on Thursday for the customers as the demand of this

body scan analysis was not high in the last few days as we expected it to be. The reason we

provided free body scan analysis is because we want to give awareness to the customers to take

care of their health so that they can have a better lifestyle. We faced a hard time to sell our tattoo

stickers so, we decided to have a clearance sale for our tattoo stickers on Wednesday and

Thursday to boost the sales.

SPONSORS

After discussion among our group members, we decided to approach sponsors from both

individuals and businesses. We had approached some businesses such as Pocky Malaysia, La

Juiceria, Coco Life Malaysia, Zalora, Mamee, F&N group and others by email them, but most of

them refused to sponsor our event as they have limited marketing budget and some other

reasons.

In the end, we are able to get donation from Menteri Besar Negeri Sembilan, Y.A.B. Dato’ Seri

Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hassan, Mr. Koe Eng Soon and Ms. Vanniss Lee. We

approached Menteri Besar Negeri Sembilan is because of his kindness generosity and his

financial stability. Nadhirah and Azreen are in charge of approaching him for the donation via

face to face communication during a township meeting with our written proposals. Mr.Koe Eng

Soon is the director of Bun Guan Brothers Sdn Bhd and Ms.Vanniss Lee is the director of Lee

Video Production Sdn Bhd. Mr. Koe and Ms. Lee are Yincy’s mother’s friends. Yincy knows them

personally so she is in charge of communicating with them. We approached Mr. Koe and Ms. Lee

through phone calls and issued the sponsorship letters to them. All of them contributed a total

amount of RM 1800 to support our event.

The following are the breakdown of their sponsors:

DISTRIBUTION

We started to get our products earlier than the actual charity drive event except the onigiri.

Our group members collected cactus from Taman Connaught and onigiri from SS 15 by using our

own transportations. We collected onigiris daily to ensure that the onigiris are fresh to be sold

within the campus.

We had decided to target Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus as our primary sales location.

Our customers can obtain our products especially the onigiri very fast as the products are single

packed and easy to bring everywhere. For the services, it takes less waiting time for the

customers to obtain our services. All of the group members are trained to be informative before

we started selling our services to maximize the manpower and reduce the waiting time.

We distributed our products and asked for donation around the campus during offpeak hours.

During peak hours which is the lunchtime, all members are required to return to the booth to help

selling the products and services to maximize the manpower and reduce the waiting time for the

customers to be served.

We had a strategic location where our booth is located near the staircase during the charity

drive which had attracted lots of customers. Besides, we also received preorder for flowers and

cactuses through Google Docs and Facebook to ensure the customers can get the products from

us.

GREEN MEASURES

The environmentallyfriendly topic is becoming popular among the citizens. We adopted some

environmentallyfriendly measures during this charity drive event in order to take care of our

mother Earth. Most of our products are considered ecofriendly as the products are made in an

environmentallyconscious manner. Temporary tattoo stickers are printed with soybean ink which

is safe for skin and environment. Cactus plant is considered as environmentallyfriendly product

as it helps to reduce the radiation in the environment. The scale doesn’t give any impact to the

environment while we are using it. Onigiri are handmade by the supplier so it’s considered as

environmentallyfriendly products. Flowers are considered as an environmentallyfriendly product

because they are fresh, can be displayed for a few days and act as a token of appreciation.

The packaging of the products may indirectly pollute the environment. In order to avoid that

from happening, we had decided to use paper bag instead of plastic bag because paper bag can

be reused and recycled easily compared to plastic bag. Onigiri and flowers are packed with

plastic which can be recycled as well when we disposed the plastic wrap into the recycle bin.

We also implement some strategies to reduce carbon footprint during this charity drive event.

We took KTM commuter, bus or carpooling to our destination to reduce the carbon footprint

emitted to the environment. We distributed our products within our campus to reduce the cost of

transportation and to save the environment as well.

The waste product such as the plastic wrap of the products are collected in a plastic bag at our

booth and it was ready to be recycled at the end of the day by disposing them into the recycle

bin. To reduce the consumption of resources, we printed our poster only once for the actual

charity drive week to reduce the consumption of paper. We used a container to store water which

needed for tattoo sticker instead of getting water from the taps and waste the water. We worked

hard to reduce the consumption of resources and the impact to the environment through this

charity drive event.

We managed to donate a total amount of RM 3155.00 to World Vision Malaysia to help the

children. We are able to collect RM 1862.10 from donation and sponsor which have contributed a

large percentage in our overall funds. We would like to thank once again for those who helped us

during this charity drive event both physically and mentally, directly and indirectly.

Also, as our group sells a variety of products, it increased our customers flow. Although all of

the products could not be associated together but it was actually a good thing as they attracted

different customers. Besides that, the location we chose to set up our stall also brought us a

great advantage as it is located next to the stairway where many students pass by. The only thing

we did wrong is that we should have bought more cactuses as many customers are willing to buy

them. After the cactuses were sold out, many customers still came up to our stall and asked

whether we are going to restock them or not. We could have earned more if we buy more

cactuses in the first place. If we can repeat this business project once again, we are going to

increase the number of cactuses and maybe cut down on the amount of the tattoos. We would

also promote more on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, etc.

In a nutshell, we actually did quite well for this assignment, profit wise. We accepted and

learned from our mistakes throughout this project with an open heart and obtained such a good

experience and knowledge.
