Best Practices#1: Know How to Use the Technology!

(ex. Difference between Facebook FAN, Group, and User Pages!)

User Pages:

• Just like the page that is of you right now on FB

• Used to connect with people that you know

• You can set all sorts of “privacy settings” and great “lists” of people to easily share and communicate.

• Is this a proper reflection of you IRL?

Group Pages:

• Used to connect people of a particular group or cause

• More private than a Fan Page, more “internal” communication among group members.

• Not searchable through Google or other search engines.

Best Practices

Fan Pages:• Dedicated to a “Brand” or “Business”

• Facebook “Insights” provide statistical information valuable to seeing who is visiting your page

• Send out “status updates” easier, shows up on Fan’s News Feed

• Engage your fans with relative posts and information!

• Don’t get caught up in #’s, care about your Insight Scores!

• Create a personal Twitter page first and use it for a few weeks, including adding a picture, website, and bio about yourself.

• Follow friends and those who share similar interests. Participate in the conversation!

• Find time every day to send out a few Tweets.

• Tell people on other Social Networks like Facebook that you are on Twitter!

• Don’t get caught up in the number of followers you have.

• Create a personal LinkedIn page, that reflects your current and past work experience.

• Connect with Groups on LinkedIn that reflect your work and education (e.g. Alumni, Organizations, etc.)

• Be a reference and earn references!

• More than 8.5 million experienced professionals from around the world representing 130 industries are on LinkedIn. It makes sense to connect with these folks!

Best Practices#2: Build Your BRAND

• Brand your URL’s for Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to all use the same “Usernames”• Use similar images (and avatars) and color schemes.• Tie all three together by citing your links on all your websites. Ask for the information on standard forms as optional information.• What do you contribute to the online conversation?

Best Practices#3: Turn the “Bullhorn” Around

Are you an ACTIVE CONTRIBUTOR?Or is it still a 1 WAY Conversation?

Other Pieces of Advice- “Retweet” (RT) when you read a Tweet that you like.- Create “Lists” in Twitter of those you Follow and share those lists withothers!- Respond to every “@” and Direct Message!

- Create “Lists” in Facebook of all your Friends

- Respond to every comment and post on your wall or other walls

- Use the new “@” command to connect brands, events, and people together!

Above all else: 1. Be an Active Contributor

2. Use the Media Properly: Listen First, Share Second3. Be the Bridge That Connects People

- If you read Blogs, post comments!!!- Try third party software like “TweetDeck” to manage all your Social Media
