Goal Setting

• First things first…. every beauty queen knows that you’ve got to have goals to get the gold! Before knowing what has to be done, the manager first must decide what the short- and long-term goals of the salon in order to formulate a clear idea of what you and your staff will need to do.

• With the specific goals in mind, the manager can put actions in place that will help to achieve those goals. Once the goals have been decided on the manger can now communicate the goals with the employees and the team and reach them together. In fact get your clients involved, and get ask them for recommendations and photos that you can use for your portfolio.

Delegating

• Effective delegation can be the hardest part of personnel management, especially if you are used to doing all the work by yourself! Delegation means assigning duties to you staff, your role as a manager is to make sure that they perform their duties – not to do the work for them. Often new managers struggle to adjust and don’t allow employees to do the work they were hired to do.

• As a salon manager you must try to resist the temptation to do all the work yourself simply because that way you know it will be done the way you like it. Teach your employees to do the job the way you like it and then let them do it.

Management duties

• Managing staff is only one part of the typical salon manager’s job. In a small business such as a salon, managers need to wear many hats. On any given day, the manager may be called on to train a new employee, deal with an angry customer, order a new products, take the day’s receipts to the bank, update payroll and many more of the dozens tasks involved in running a salon. In short, if there’s something to be done you as the manager are probably the one who will need to do it!

• As a salon manager you need to think about getting a qualification as an investment in the future. Making sure to up-skill your stylists is another duty that any salon manager should take seriously, consider signing your staff up for short beauty courses. Once you and your employees are trained, and you’re used to the role of manager, your salon will start running nice and smoothly.

• The P is for Passion. Passion is the foundation of being an entrepreneur. You need to have a passion not only for your salon and beauty styling, but for the full experience of being a salon manager. Passion will get you out of bed in the morning, even though you only had a few hours of sleep because you were up late taking inventory. Passion will help you get through the bad days, and will make the good days that much more meaningful.

• The O stands for Organization. As a small business owner you are required to juggle your personal life, customers, employees, finances and more. Being organized will help you focus on the task at hand and still have time for some fun. Find a system that help keeps you and your staff in order and stick with it.

• And lastly the M is for Motivation. Drive, motivation, being a self-starter – whatever you call it, having it is a must if you want to be a successful salon owner. By completing smaller tasks, you start to build momentum which will help you conquer bigger tasks and challenges throughout the day.
