  3. 3. The word Bollywood is (obviously) a play on Hollywood, with the B coming from Bombay (now known as Mumbai), the center of the film world. It was a portrait photographer called Harischandra Sakharam Bhatavdekar who made Indian motion picture' history. His short reality film screened in 1899 was called The Wrestlers and was a simple recording of a local wrestling match. History of Bollywood

History of Bollywood It was only after the turn of the century that Indian entertainment underwent a sea change when the Father of Indian Cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke, released his path breaking film of the Silent Era, Raja Harishchandra. The film, based on a mythological character, was released in 1913 and was Indias first full-length feature film. Yes, Bollywood had finally arrived!

Imports from Hollywood, primarily action films, were well received by Indian audiences, and producers quickly began following suit. It was a gift that remains the signature of the quintessential Hindi film to date.

While commercial Hindi cinema was thriving, the 1950s also saw the emergence of a new Parallel Cinema movement. The songs, the cinematography, the arrival of color to the movies. Mughal-e-Azam had released on 5 August 1960 it broke box office records in India, and became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time, a distinction it held for 15 years. Set in the 1970s, the film depicts the story of Murphy "Barfi" Johnson (a mute and deaf man from Darjeeling) and his relationships with two women, Shruti and Jhilmil (who is autistic). Internationally, Barfi earned around 124 million (US$1.9 million) in its opening weekend. Ranbir Kapoor played the role of a deaf and mute man in the film. It opened well at the box office, and Box Office India declared the film a "hit" in India and a "blockbuster" overseas.Jab Tak Hai Jaan emerged as the third-highest- grossing Bollywood film overseas at that time, after 3 Idiots and My Name Is Khan (2010).
