SCHOOL ASSESSMENT SYSTEM

Beata Kocjan

Page 2: Assessment system poland

Students’ progress is monitored on a regular basis and the assessment takes place quite often

Students can be given from 10 – 20 grades per term depending on the teacher

All the marks are registered in a traditional paper register and ranked from 1 (being the lowest) to 3 (the highest)

All the marks are described: vocabulary 1, speaking – theme parks, grammar - tenses

Page 3: Assessment system poland

6 is excellent and 1 is bad (failed), 2 means passed

At the end of the term the mean value of them all is calculated (4.1 – 4; 3.7 – 4 )

The grade which appears on the final report is the mean value of all the marks gathered throughout the whole school year

All the rules are stated in the School Assessment System, which is transparent for teachers, parents and students

What are students given marks for

Homeworks – written and oral assignments on almost daily basis, for example:

• daily routine (present simple)• Friday 13th, stories (past tenses)

•Advertisment of a theme park•Descriptions - provide definitions, synonyms, antonyms•Charitable organisations – describe a Polish one

•Ecology - problems, consequences, solutions•Grammar or vocabulary drills

Not always reliable therefore assessed with lower ranks

Speaking, for example:

•Speeches – individual presentations in front of class (vocabulary consolidation, fluency)

•Dialogues, interviews, radio and TV shows based on text mediation (very motivating – a forest of volunteers)

Writing, for example:

•Tests after each coursebook unit, after 2 or even 5 units (the highest rank)

•Vocabulary quizzes – quick translations

Page 7: Assessment system poland

•Language functions, everyday situations – quick translations

•Grammar tests covering one or more problems – the final target being the ability to paraphrase structures

A sample of a method based on text mediation

•Lead – in excersises: What does a police dog do?

•Reading comprehension

•Vocabulary work: the teacher highlights important issues

Page 8: Assessment system poland

•Students’ pair work : make an interview with a dog handler – use vocabulary from the text, present the results

EXTERNAL EXAMS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

•Based on National Curriculum

•Organised, supervised and assessed by Central Examination Board

•The results are taken into consideration during the recruitment process for the upper secondary level and higher education (methods suitable for ‘producing’ test – wise takers)
