What is language transfer?
- It is the process by which people learn a second
language in addition to their native language
Positive and negative transferWhen the relevant unit or structure of both
languages is the same, linguistic interference can result
in correct language production called positive
transfer
Negative transfer occurs when speakers and writers transfer items and structures that are not the same in both languages
Some factors affecting language transfer
Social effects- Gender role- Community- Parent - nature of group dynamics in the
language classroom

Individual variationQ: Why do some learners do better than
others?A: some factors are: 1. Language Aptitude
: the natural ability to learn language, not including intelligence, motivation, interest, etc.
: a combination of various abilities –Oral mimicry ability, Phonemic ability, and Grammatical sensitivity ability.
Continuing2. Age: (It is better to dispose young children to
maintain both –home language and second language. ): (it is advantageous for young children to grow up bilingually. )
3. Strategy use (verbal and non –verbal )- A learner may lack a particular word or structure
and have to use Paraphrase to compensate.
Continuing4. Language Anxiety: subjective feelings of
apprehension and fear associated with language learning and use
5. Motivation: the driving force in any situation that leads to action. to expend effort to learn the second language –integrative orientation, instrumental orientation, integrative motivation and intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation .
6. Personal factors: introverts (shy people) and extroverts (unreserved and outgoing people). believed that “ Extroverts “ acquired a second language better than “ Introverts”.
