Absentation
Absentation
Back in the 1800s, Polti collected the 36 most dramatic situations seen in storytelling.
They are still very relevant story structures for film and television.
Absentation is one of the most popular dramatic situations. He lists it as number 36: lost of loved one
Absentation
There can be a variety of separation structures but orphan models are the most popular. Propp used the term Absentation.
This is when the parental figure is painfully absent in the hero's life during the first act of the film.
Oftentimes this hole itself is big enough to motivate them on a hero's journey.
Below are several examples of the orphan looking for belonging.
