A year at Durrington High School Enterprising women’s conference On 19 November, 10 girls from year 10 represented Durrington at the annual Chichester University ‘Enterprising Women’ conference. The day was a fantastic opportunity for students to meet women in business, who are working at the top of their field. The girls were able to listen to a presentation by each speaker, and then work in small groups, asking questions to each of the women about their career path and choices. Students also had the opportunity to work on their own career plans, and discover the kind of fields that interest them, and best suit them. The session ended in the main conference hall, with members of each group asking a question to the panel in front of the entire cohort. When asked what they had taken away from the event, the girls said ‘anything is within your reach if you are willing to work to get it’, ‘no matter what, put your best in all the time’, and ‘never let anyone tell you that you cannot achieve something.’ The students who attended were a true credit to DHS. A year at Durrington High SchoolVenice tripThere are only so many adjectives to describe the dazzling scenery and delicious food stuffs, however, little can be said about the visual abundance and artistic stimuli that consumed the group from the first moment we landed in Venice until the minute we departed. Words cannot explain the beauty and extravagance of this impressive city, in fact, there is no point in talking about the particulars; if you want the details simply peruse the pages of the many sketch filled books of our students and I guarantee that with each image drawn a story can be provided provoked by the interest of the subject matter and the artistic ability for which it was chosen by the observer.

The cool environment, delightful sights and picturesque scenery aroused the artistic abilities of all present, teachers and students alike. The calming influence of the city encouraged questioning and insight as we wandered the halls of a master practitioner sculpted with hot glass to demonstrate the strength of artistic valour upon the small island of Murano and the beautifully crafted lace and painted housing on Burano exploited the vibrancy, abundance of colour and culture the city has to offer.

To all future participants of the art department residencies I would say simply this; Guardate con i vostri occhi, sentire con le orecchie, ma vivere la citt veneta attraverso la creativit. (Look with your eyes, hear with your ears, but experience the Venetian city through creativity.)

A year at Durrington High SchoolScience legendsThe Science legends awards system is something that has been put into place at Durrington this year, and has been a welcome addition to the school. It is an award that is given out every half term on the behalf of the science department, and goes to students who are excelling at science. Students are nominated by their science teacher and their name is then displayed on the Science Legends board in science.

We feel it is important as it is something that allows the students who are picked, to feel a sense of pride about their work at Durrington, in particular how they are doing in science. The qualities these students show are not wholly to do with their achievement grades, but a whole host of associated qualities. When thinking about the awards, science teachers are looking at the effort students put into their work, their attainment, improvement in the quality of their work and the resilience they display when working through difficult tasks and ideas, for example, how do they tackle tough questions and remain focused on their work when it gets really tough? The response from the pupils has been positive, and the impact of that can be felt from the incredibly positive messages from the parents of the students.

A year at Durrington High SchoolNational schools mock trial competitionEach school had to prosecute the case and defend it in two separate rounds; this requires students to think on their feet as, although familiar with the case, they are unaware of what questions they will be asked in court. Our students were excellent. Prior to the court case, we had a talk from a police dog handler and a visit to the cells below the Law Courts. Following this was a question and answer session with the High Sheriff of West Sussex, the Chair of the Worthing Magistrates Bench, and representatives from the legal justice system from across Sussex. Our students had prepared questions in advance and the panel were impressed by the depth and range of the questions. The team from Durrington won their two rounds and came a very close second to the overall winners, Bishop Luffa School. This was an incredible experience for our students. They had excellent feedback from the judges, who commented on their clear and well-paced presentation, good discussion focused on the evidence, and good questions, open and well followed up.

Five schools took part Durrington High School, Bishop Luffa School (Chichester), Felpham Community College (Bognor) and Purbrook Park School (Hampshire). Students took on the roles of lawyers, witnesses, magistrates, court staff and a defendant. Our team comprised 14 year 9 students.

A year at Durrington High School4216teen mentoring programme

DHS continues to provide our students with as many opportunities as possible and by working together with local businesses our 12 week mentoring programme was once again a great success. This local initiative gives students the opportunity to work alongside business mentors and as a result improve their skills, such as responsibility, communication and engagement through discussion which ultimately improves students confidence and motivation. Below are quotes from some of the students who took part. They inspired me, as they own their own business and made me think that I could do that tooI feel more confident in my abilityI would certainly recommend the programme to others, it was so useful, Id tell them to do it, as it really helps and Id like to carry onIts these outcomes that confirm the additional support provided really does help our students. Ensuring they make the most of their time whilst at school will also benefit them personally now and in the future. Durrington High School is grateful to those businesses that took part, by working alongside our students you have helped to enrich their lives.

A year at Durrington High SchoolWorld book dayAction adventure author Chris Bradford entertained a huge number of students, inviting them to learn some close personal protection skills along with witnessing a thrilling display of his own Samurai swordsmanship.Chis describes himself as a Method Author, learns the skills and techniques that his characters need in order to write informed, exciting and engaging novels. His latest book Bodyguard: Ransom sees 14 year old Connor Reeves on a mission in open waters dealing with Somali Pirates holding his Principle and all on board to ransom.

Our World Book Day competition winners got the opportunity to get their books signed, meet the author and ask him questions. We loved every second of it! Wed like to say a big thank you to those who organised the event and the extra good news is that Chris has accepted an invitation to visit Durrington High within the year!

A year at Durrington High SchoolWorthing town centre initiative

Durrington High School students took part in a local enterprise organised by the Worthing Town Centre Initiative. Nine students, along with other volunteers from local businesses, community groups and charities, spent the day on Sunday 17th May planting flower beds on Worthing Seafront in preparation for the summer competition.

The flower beds run from Splash Point to the Beach Office and each group of volunteers were given 30 worth of plants. The Durrington High School team decided on the most suitable plants for a seafront setting and chose strong colours as they wanted to create a vibrant display for all to see. The year 9 students received lots of positive comments from passing shoppers who admired their creativity and ingenuity.

It was a real community atmosphere and the students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to returning regularly to maintain their work. The final judging of the competition will take place later in the summer with a 500 first prize for the overall winners.

A year at Durrington High SchoolDuke of Edinburgh Awards38 students split into 7 teams, enjoyed a sunny Saturday hiking from Amberley station to Yapton as part of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition, only to wake up on the Sunday morning to see the blue skies replaced with cloud and rain which as they found out, is better to walk in.

This time they hiked form Yapton, north to near Eartham and by then the sun had come out to welcome them at the finish. No team got lost or was overtime at the checkpoints so well done to all!

A year at Durrington High SchoolMagistrates dayYour life you chooseYear 8 students were able to participate in this series of workshops which has now become an established part of our work at Durrington High School. We had visitors on each of the two days, when students were given the opportunity to have a better understanding of the problems and consequences of crime. The workshops provided were the police; magistrates; sentencing; drugs & alcohol; Directions (a company developed by ex-offenders on their release from prison).

Students had enjoyable and informative day. Here are some of the things they said about the day:I learnt that you can get arrested for being at the scene of a crime. The best part was the valuable life lessons we learned. The whole day inspired me.It was interesting to learn about how a victim feels.I learnt not to neglect my education.

Thank you to our year 8 students, who once again impressed our visitors with their enthusiasm and depth and range of questions, and to our visitors for ensuring that the day was a valuable experience. We look forward to next year.

A year at Durrington High SchoolDurrington festivalThe students had a variety of goods and games on offer, from traditional tombola, guess the weight of the cake, book sales, sponge throwing, the 50 challenge and even tattoos! The day was enjoyed by all and the students should be very proud of their efforts raising a total of 166 for their chosen charity.

The Children of Sumatra is a UK registered charity which was set up with the aim of helping children suffering from cleft lip and palate living on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Many families there are too poor to pay for a simple operation that can change their childs future. The average cost of treatment is 180, the students hope that with a small top up to their fund raising achievements they will be able to help transform the life of one child.

Well done to the Interact students who will be getting involved in more events in the future.

Durrington High Schools team of Interact students have taken part in a number of fun activities and local community voluntary events. Their latest achievement was running their own stall at the Durrington Festival to raise money and awareness for their chosen international charity The Children of Sumatra.

A year at Durrington High SchoolNational success For dhs Rock challengeRock Challenge is a national event inviting schools to experience the adrenaline of performance by creating an 8 minute piece of dance and drama based on a theme which they can perform in a professional theatre. Schools are judged on elements including their set design, costume, soundtrack, hair and make-up designs along with the choreography and performance of the piece. To gain a place in the final Durrington have already placed 3rd in the Southern Premier Final and to qualify as a premier school they had to win a final in the open division so it is a prestigious event. 305 schools involving 18,000 competitors have taken part in this years Rock Challenge events across the country from Scotland to the Isle of Wight. Our piece was entitled No Birds sang and is based on the Aberfan disaster which took place in 1966 when it took just 5 minutes for the coal tip to slide down the mountain. Described as skilful, mature and thought provoking, the Durrington team were thrilled to be awarded 4th place overall at the Rock Challenge National Finals. This fantastic achievement recognises the hard work, determination and professionalism of our students. It was an outstanding performance even more so as we were the only school without a sixth form in the final. Dozens of supporters travelled up to Milton Keynes and it was an amazing evening; as ever we are proud of our students.

A year at Durrington High SchoolCrest awardCongratulations to Shakib Rashid who has been awarded a gold crest award for his efforts in science and technology. He completed a project which took more than 70 hours in total and over 6 months to complete. The final result of his research was to create a remote controlled (RC) plane which could deliver light weight packages to deliver either food, medicine or other useful items to hard to reach areas. Within his timeframe he also had to follow a strict budget for which he set himself. However, Shakib went even further beyond our expectations when he added a first person viewer to the aircraft in order to be able to fly the RC plane from a pilots perspective.Though Shakib was in his final year at Durrington High School he completed the project with very little input from myself and still had time to revise and sit his GCSEs. Despite this difficulty he was awarded the highest achievement of Gold for this CREST award and is one of only a few to achieve this in his year.Shakib has told us that he is still making RC vehicles and is currently making a quad-copter in the hopes that they will be able to carry heavier loads. We hope that Shakib continues in this passion where we will undoubtedly see him progress even further in the future. These opportunities are available to all students at Durrington High School and we hope to see even more of our great minds challenging themselves in the future.

If you enjoy organising events or would like to lend a hand, have a little or a lot to give wed like to hear from you. Come and meet our friendly team for their annual Cheese and Wine welcome evening on Tuesday 8th September 2015 at 7.00pm here at the school. A year at Durrington High SchoolEye eco summitOn 13th July a group of five DHS students went to Shoreham College to attend the 8th EYE Project Worthing and Adur Eco-Summit. The students had the opportunity to browse stands and attend workshops. They participated in three workshops; Fabulous Local Food in Sussex, Breathe Campaign and Solar Education. Fabulous Local Food in Sussex enabled students to take part in creating a delicious dish made of local produce. DHS student Rose Lelliott reflected on attending the workshop, the Fabulous Local Food workshop inspired me to cook local produce. Rosemary Moon demonstrated how to make Strawberries with Chilli and lime. I took home the recipe and made it with my family. This has inspired me to eat more local produce. Charlie Keen pledged to conserve more water. Southern Water gave him an egg timer to reduce showers to 4 minutes. He says that since the Eco-summit, my family have been using the timer regularly. This means that we have reduced water usage. Over one hundred students from Durrington High School entered the EYE project design a mascot competition. Our entries were praised for their quality. It was fantastic that Isabelle Combes was joint KS3 winner for her design Recycling Rosie. She was invited to attend the EYE Eco-Summit and received a 30 book voucher. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and learnt a lot about eco initiatives. These students are going to be part of the first ever DHS eco group which will seek to make DHS more sustainable.

A year at Durrington High School

As we approach the end of the current academic year, our thoughts have firmly turned to celebrating the outstanding achievements of our students this year both inside and outside of the classroom.

Our Year 8 students are now firmly part of the Durrington High School community and it was their turn to be rewarded for what has been an outstanding first year at Durrington High School. 27 students were invited to attend the event attended by representatives of the governing body and the Senior Leadership Team and the breakfast event gave us the opportunity to meet with the students and recognise their outstanding effort, behaviour and homework throughout the year.

Subject staff provided examples of each of the students outstanding work and staff and governors had the opportunity to discuss their work and feedback on their first years experiences with us. The opportunity for staff and governors to celebrate the work of the students is an area that we are constantly developing and we look forward to creating many more opportunities to do so next year.
