Introduction

• Grouting is an essential part of tiling

• If done correctly, it adds to the aesthetic appearance of the tiling job

• It also allows for slight deviations in tile size

Preparation for grouting

• Before grouting, you must make sure that:

– The adhesive behind the tiles has dried

– The joints are clear of any excess adhesive

– The joints are free of dust and/or dirt (more likely to apply to floor-tile grouting)

Grouting procedure

Once all joints are prepared and the grout has been mixed to the

correct consistency, grouting can take place!

1. Apply the grout across the face of the tiles using the grout float –

press the grout into the joints as the grout is moved across

2. Grout only a small area first, to check the rate at which the grout is

curing – then adjust the areas being grouted to be larger or smaller

depending on whether the grout is drying quickly or slowly

3. Remove as much grout from the face of the tile while still

maintaining a good full joint

4. Once an area is grouted, use the wash boy or a clean bucket and

sponge to wash diagonally across the face of the tile – this creates

a uniform and smooth grout joint, so take proper care over this!

5. When cleaning the grout from the face of the tile, rinse the tile and

squeeze as much water from the sponge as possible or you will be

simply moving grout from one area to another

6. Once grouting is completed, leave it to dry – then, a dry cloth can be

used to polish the surface and remove any remaining residue

Top tip: natural stone must be sealed before grouting can take

place – if grouted unsealed, the grout will be absorbed into the

stone and staining will occur
