• Chemical, biological or radiological contaminants may be released accidentally or intentionally into the environment.

• Should this occur, you may be asked to observe In-Place Protection (IPP), that is, stay indoors and take precautionary measures to safeguard yourself and your family.

• The purpose of IPP is to protect the occupants by preventing the chemical vapors from infiltrating the homes or buildings.

In the event of an emergency, you will be notified through :

Public Warning System (PWS)

Radio and TV

Mobile public address system

Loudhailers

Door-to-door notification

General essentials items needed during IPP:

• 1 roll of masking tape (at least 48mm width)• A pair of scissors• Sufficient thrash bags• Radio• Fresh supplies batteries

Optional Items:• Torchlight• Non – Perishable Food• Bottled of water (if no water supply)• Handphone (if no wired phone)

1. When instructions are given to adopt IPP, you should stay calm and immediately gather your family members indoors.

2. Close and lock all doors, windows and openings.

3. Switch off all ventilation and air-conditioning units that draw in air from the outside.

4. Go to a large room with the least number of openings, preferably with a toilet and water supply.

5. Use masking tape to seal off any obvious gaps around the windows, doors, vents and other openings. Use wet towels to cover door gaps.

6. Use trash bags or plastic sheets to cover any gaps or openings and seal them up. This will increase the air-tightness in the unit.

7. Monitor the television channels and radio for further information or instructions from the authorities.

What is the purpose of IPP?

The purpose of IPP is to protect the occupants by preventing the chemical vapors from infiltrating the homes or buildings.

When do you adopt IPP?

When “IMPORTANT MESSAGE” warning signal is given. Tune in to radio or TV for information.

What should you do in a sealed room?

Go to a room with the least number of openings (doors and windows), preferably with a toilet and water supply. Monitor the local radio or TV channels for further information.

What should you do if one of your family members is affected by the chemicals?

Notify the authorities for immediate medical treatment.

When is it safe to leave the sealed room?

Leave the sealed room only after the “ALL CLEAR” signal has been given. After which, you may remove all seals and open windows to allow fresh air into your unit or apartment.

Remember, do take note of the means of warning before you implement IPP. Your safety will come when you follow the IPP steps correctly.

Also, do remember that instructions to adopt In-Place Protection are usually provided for the duration of a few hours, not days.
