3. What kind of media
institution might distribute
your media product
and why?Amber, Sophie, Niyi and Phoebe
A media institution that might distribute our media product would
be ‘Warner bros’ as a lot of their film’s follow along the genre of
crime such as ‘Prisoner’s’ and ‘The Dark Knight’.
Another media institution that we thought would distribute our
media product is ‘Columbia Pictures’ as a lot of films that they
have distributed follow along the genre of crime and this includes
‘The Shawshank Redemption’, ’21 Jump Street’ and ‘22 Jump
Street’.
Benefits
If a major media conglomerate distributed our media
product, then people are much more likely to watch it in
cinemas as the film company obviously believed that
our film will sell well.
Major film companies are much more able to be able to
take risks than independent companies. For example,
if they distribute a film and it isn’t particularly
successful, this will affect independent companies
much more than media conglomerates since media
conglomerates have much more other successful films
that will be able to cover the costs.
Differences Although, these major film companies specialise in a few crime
films, the same genre of our media product, there are many
differences between the films they distribute and our own film
opening.
For example, the film’s distributed by major film companies,
have much more technical camera equipment and production
companies can invest in much more whereas all we used was
one camera and a tripod. The film companies must know that
the film will sell well based on the quality that it is produced at.
Our media product includes the use of low quality cameras and
equipment, therefore major film companies would not even
think twice about distributing our media product.
Also, major film companies work on very high budgets. For
example, ’21 Jump Street’ had a budget of ‘$42,000,00’
whereas our media product had £0 budget.
Independent Film Companies We believe that our media product is most likely to be
distributed by an independent film company rather than a major media conglomerate.
This is because Independent film companies work on a much lower budget therefore we may have more of a chance of our media product being distributed by them.
It would also be easier to reach our target audience more effectively through social media, cheaply and quickly.
Since our media product was produced in the UK, the ‘UK Film Council’ would be a good independent company that could distribute our media product.
Another benefit of being distributed by an Independent film company is that our films will be shown in small independent cinemas therefore there would be no competition between ours and major media conglomerate films.
For Independent companies, films were advertised through the use of social media. For example, actors would regularly tweet updates of filming etc.
They also have their own website where people can look into more depth about the company and film. Also, Patchwork Productions (another Independent film company) created competitions such as creating a poster design for one of their new and upcoming films.
A YouTube channel will help to promote our media product.
Posters are also a cheap, easy and effective way of promoting our media product.
Most social networking sites would be effective in promoting our media product. For example, this includes ;Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr etc.
Film Rating
If our film were to be distributed, then
we believed that it would receive a
classification of 15 since it is a crime
film which includes the use of violence
and strong language.
