What is the purpose of the study? This part of the study is to try and understand whether existing policy, guidance and provision within the UK is sufficient to safeguard young people with learning difficulties and/or learning disabilities who self harm and explore if it caters for their specific needs.

Why have I been chosen? You are being invited to take part in this study, as special schools are in a good position to offer insight into this topic, and express views on whether national and local policy, guidelines and initiatives around self harm have positive outcomes for children with learning difficulties and comment on experiences of disclosure and referral.

What will participation involve? The interview can be carried out within the school or at the civic centre in.........; whichever would be more convenient for you. The interview will be based around a semi structured interview pattern and will take approximately 30-40 minutes. It is intended as an opportunity for you to express your views on the

“Keeping children and young people safe”

Information sheet for you!

Version: 2008/2009/1 3

Hello, my name is Rachael and I am looking at how children who have hurt themselves are kept safe. Please have a look at this leaflet and call me if you have any questions, or would like to be interviewed. Thank you for reading this.

This part of the study is to try and understand your experience of self-harm, how you felt, and how you were helped.

What is the study about?

Why have I been chosen?

You are very important and with your help we can learn more about how to keep young people safe!

I will be asking you some questions about how you felt when you self harmed, if you felt you get help or tell somebody, and how you were helped after.

It can take place in your school or at the civic centre.

It will take 20-30 minutes. If you agree, it will be recorded on to an audio tape.

I will use your words but not your name – No one will know who you are!

What will happen in the interview?

If you are under 18 and would like to take part, then we will need your parents consent.

Can I stop the interview?

You can stop the interview any time.

You do not need to answer any questions you don’t want to.

You can stop the interview at any time, and you can pull out of the study up until 31st May 2009 without saying why.

Will the things I tell you be kept secret?

No one will know who you are but if you tell me something that indicates that you, or another child, are at risk of quite serious harm then I may need to tell somebody else to keep you safe.
