Keynote AddresssDr. John Pezzuto, founding dean of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy is our distinguished keynote speaker for the University’s 2015 spring commencement.

Dr. Pezzuto arrived at UH Hilo in 2006 from Purdue University where he had served as professor and dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences. He was tasked with creating a college, from the ground up, to serve Hawai‘i and the Pacific region as envisioned by the late Hawai‘i U.S. Senator for whom the institution is named.

Despite having no offices, staff or students, Dr. Pezzuto assembled a team of world-renowned faculty which enabled the then, UH Hilo College of Pharmacy, to seat an inaugural class of 90 students the following year and award its first degrees in 2011.

Today, the College is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), on track to become one of the nation’s top 25 institutions, and can look forward to moving into new, modern facilities following last year’s groundbreaking of a permanent home. Dr. Pezzuto believes the successful journey that took the College from a concept to its current status, illustrates what can be accomplished through inspiration, focus and hard work -- the same qualities required to earn a degree.

“Many people predicted the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy would fail, but it will not fail! and, I hope our graduates can view this as an example of how they, too, can be part of something that improves society while at the same time generating pride and self-contentment.”

Dr. Pezzuto will remind graduates that their future is in their hands and that the true value of their degrees will be determined by what they do going forward. His address also marks the final UH Hilo Commencement for him because he leaves in August to assume his new duties as professor and dean of the Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Long Island University (LIU) in Brooklyn, New York. He embarks on that next chapter with a sense of satisfaction that the team he assembled here has largely fulfilled its lofty goals.

“From the very beginning, our aspiration was to not simply create a degree mill but to create a top-ranked college that will inspire hope and pride, and, we have proven that a college with all the right stuff can be based in Hilo and thrive.” Dr. Pezzuto believes that the ‘torch’ being passed is strong and bright and he will look back on his experience and the countless friendships he’s made along the way.

He will also reflect on a lengthy list of firsts, including the inaugural class, gaining professional accreditation, recruitment efforts, establishing quality graduate and research programs, along with the effort to secure a permanent home for the College. And while you can take him out of the College, you can’t take the College out of him.

“Building this College and everything surrounding its creation has become a part of my soul,” Pezzuto said. “In that sense, I don’t imagine I will ever leave.”

Student AddresssAlyssa Loving, a mathematics major with a minor in computer science, represents the Class of 2015 as student speaker. Born on the Big Island of Hawai‘i and raised in Honomu, she has earned numerous academic honors and awards both locally and abroad.

At UH-Hilo, she has maintained a 3.97 GPA and received the University of Hawai‘i Presidential Scholarship, the Pearson Mathematics Underclassman and Graduating Senior Awards, the Pearson Book Award For Outstanding Computer Science Freshman, and the University of Hawai‘i Centennial Scholarship. Outside of the classroom, she has also participated in UH-Hilo’s PURE Math program. Alyssa has also spent a semester studying Mathematics in Budapest and summers performing mathematics research at Williams College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her work has been showcased at national conferences, where she won the outstanding research poster award from the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science. Alyssa has also been given honorable mention for her achievements by the prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship and is a National Merit Commended Scholar.

In addition to her national accomplishments and recognitions, Alyssa remains heavily involved with campus life, serving as a mathematics and computer science tutor as well as Editor-in-Chief of for UH Hilo’s art and literary magazine Kanilehua.

In the Fall, Alyssa will be entering a mathematics graduate program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she will continue following her passion in mathematics research.

Warm Wishes from your Student Body Pressident John Dewey once said that education is not preparation for life, but rather education is life itself. You have passed the rigorous trials of your immediate college education, but your life of learning is far from over. Every moment has a latent lesson, each event in our lives lurks a glorious learning opportunity. One of the greatest lessons we can take away from our time here is that to be truly successful in this life, we should never stop learning. The piece of paper you receive today may be about academics, but the experience was a lesson in life. Today, as you ceremoniously graduate from one school, you are still yet a budding student in the school of life.

It is no easy task to follow through with earning a college degree, and we hope that your academic experience here inspires you to continue learning and striving for greatness. There is no doubt that what you have gained during your time here at UH Hilo will en-hance your future learning, and we are hopeful and confident you will continue on to grow wise and do great works in the world. When you think about the last four years, you’ll probably remember that your greatest lessons came from outside the classroom. It’s a good reminder that learning doesn’t stop just because you got a diploma. I wish you courage as you step ahead towards new challenges in life.

The door to learning was open when you arrived, now that you’ve graduated, don’t close it behind you. Today is a route marker. It tells you how far you’ve come, not that you have finished your journey. Keep learning, keep trying, and keep accomplishing! In the eternal words of Mahatma Gandhi: “Live as if you were to die tomorrow, and learn as if you were to live forever!”

Look forward to hearing all the great successes that you have accomplished!

Warm Wishes,

Mindy Alles, UHHSA President 2014-2015

The Star-Spangled BannerPoem by Francis Scott Key Music by John Stafford Smith

Oh, say, can you see by the dawn‘s early lightWhat so proudly we hailed at the twilight‘s last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,O‘er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket‘s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave

O‘er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

English Translation by Kauanoe KamanÅ, Kalena Silva,Kenith Simmons, William H. Wilson

Lehua blossom flames leap high above Hilo,Hilo, proud bearer of the torch of wisdom, light for all to share.I shall always cherish the Kanilehua rain;Hilo, lush with vegetation, a lei reaching to the highest peaks.

Chorus:Rise up, O Hilo, wear proudly the mantle of enlightenment;

Let us stand united in purpose, mind and heart.

Academic RegaliaThe academic costume worn by faculty during commencement comes from an old tradition dating from the Middle Ages. At that time all students were clerics. Academic regalia was worn to keep students warm as well as to identify the religious order to which the student belonged.

In America, academic costumes were established based on the intercollegiate code of 1895. Each aspect of the costume, such as gown color, mortarboard tassel, and sleeve shape, indicate something about the wearer and the highest degree received.

Most gowns are black, but some schools use brightly colored gowns. The color of the tassel indicates the highest degree earned by the wearer; a doctor‘s cap frequently bears a tassel of gold. Sleeves that are pointed are worn by holders of a bachelor‘s degree, oblong sleeves by holders of master‘s degrees, and bell-shaped sleeves indicate the wearer holds a doctorate or specialist degree. The doctor is distinguished by the three bars that adorn the sleeves of the gown.

The brightly colored hoods are the outstanding feature of the academic costume. They represent both the field of study and the university from which the degree was earned, as represented by the colors of both the border and the lining.

Here at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, we also continue the tradition of marching in academic regalia. Indeed, the colorful procession of faculty is marked by distinctive caps and gowns from universities worldwide. Similarly, the color of the tassel worn by today‘s graduation candidates reflect their major.
