Pod Wide Groupings• We have Pod wide groupings for

reading and mathematics this year… Why? • more guided lessons with each group – because there are

fewer groups in each class• more targeted teaching because the groups have similar

needs and learning goals • children from across the pod at the same level are grouped

together, so there is no one by themselves in a class on a level

• teachers are used for their particular strengths • Comprehension strategies being taught and LBTC tasks are

consistent across all classes • prepares students to be able to cope with any teacher and

develops their self management skills

RoutinesMorning routines:• Shoes on the shoe rack• Water (only) bottles on the water bottle table • (children can have a drink whenever they need to throughout the day) • Lunch box stays in their bag• Book bag, diary and reading books are placed in the reading class boxes • Hang bag, vest and jacket in the bag cupboard• Find something quiet and sensible to do, or go back outside to play until the

bell goes! Please note: children must wait for the 8.30 bell to go before they are allowed into their classroom

Afternoon routines • Put classroom and school equipment back where it came from• Gather all belongings, diary, book bag, drink bottle etc• Put vest on • Put hat on

General routines: • Use your manners at all times including knocking on a door and saying excuse

me • Follow the classroom treaty • Self management

Parent Procedures • Please wait outside the da Vinci space at the

end of the day • If your child is not on the bus, please call and

let the office know before 2.00pm - if your child is ticked as on the bus, we will put them on the bus

• If you need to pick your child up early, please go to Aynslee and let her know the situation, she will give you a blue sign out form, which you then show to the classroom teacher

• You keep this blue form with you, incase you are stopped by Police or a truancy officer

• If your child is sick, also please ring and let Aynslee know

Mathematics and Statistics Numeracy – in each class• All students are grouped according to knowledge and

strategies • Whole class begins together with a hotspot activity• Groups rotate around the following learning experiences:

*Teacher *Practise*Knowledge *Games

• Conclusion of the lesson involves sharing learning and reflection Strand • Mrs Chamberlain will be taking one group from each class

for strand mathematics in two week blocks. This term we will be learning about - TIME

Literacy Reading - to, by and with!

Shared reading: to model reading strategies, fluency and comprehension, includes poem of the week and big book of the week

Guided reading: to apply new strategies to new texts that have an element of challenge. Students are grouped according to reading levels, comprehension and strategies used, guided reading book will come home to be read for LBTC

Independent reading: a rotation of activities students are

engaged in to practice the skills and strategies being taught during shared and guided reading

Literacy Writing - to, by and with!

Shared writing: to model the writing process and to develop the craft of writing

Guided writing: to apply new ideas taken from modelling Students are grouped according to writing levels (with consideration of deeper and surface features

Independent writing: to practice the skills and strategies being taught during shared and guided writing

Word study: words strategies, spelling patterns and grammatical conventions are explicitly taught and then applied to the writing process as well as LBTC

E-learning Rest assured…. we still read books

and write with pencils!

E-learning is a tool we use within our 21st century learning environment to hook our kids into learning!

Please ensure you go through the Remarkable Citizenship booklet with

your child, sign and return the form to me as soon as possible

Information CentreAhuwhenua will be going to the library in

their reading rotation classes…

Ahuwhenua 1 Reading Class - Tuesday Ahuwhenua 2 Reading Class - ThursdayAhuwhenua 3 Reading Class - FridayAhuwhenua 4 Reading Class – Wednesday

Please ensure your child brings their library book onthe day their reading class will be visiting the library - if they forget on the correct day books can be returned

and issued during lunchtimes too

Physical Education Fitness - daily for 15 minutes

Physical Education – Swimming•Wednesday 13th March•Thursday 14th March •Friday 15th March •Monday 18th March •Tuesday 19th March •Wednesday 20th March Parent helpers will definitely be need for walking to and from the Events Centre – notices will come home in children’s book bags

soon Mr Hammond will also be taking 45 minute P.E. lessons once a week with each class – as per the class timetable

Performing Arts Miss Moore is our Performing Arts Specialist teacher, she takes each class for lessons throughout the term •Dance•Drama

opportunities are available for parents to join either our Whole School Assembly at 2:15 or a Workshop Session within Ahuwhenua Pod classrooms at 2:30. Please see newsletter for specific dates for each opportunity

Learning Beyond the Classroom

• Reading book - Monday –Thursday – one reading books will come home for two nights in a row – so a total of two new books per week per child

• Poem on Friday • Literacy and Numeracy • Word Study • Website• Diary

We do have duties and meetings before and after school so it would be a good idea to check with your classroom teacher what days are best to catch them
