Diploma: Assessment for Music

You will be assessed both on your composition and your performance.

You will be given one piece of written homework during the project, and this will be an important part of your diploma mark too.

You will be given marks for the 3 elements (composition, performance, homework), and your Diploma project mark will be an average of the 3.

Pentatonic Scales

On your handout: Label all the white notes (from C to C).

Now draw a star on or next to the notes that you will play in a Pentatonic Scale.

Task 1: Compose a ‘question’ melody which lasts 8 beats

RULES:Pitch - You can only use notes from the pentatonic scale (C, D, E, G, A).Note lengths - All notes must be a crotchet (1 beat) or a minim (2 beats)Melody length - it must be eight beats long.Shape - This melody can be any shape (rising, falling or both), but it must start on C and finish on D/E/G/A

Task 3: Compose a 2nd melody –an answering phrase for your composition

RULES:Pitch - You can still only use C,D,E,G,A.Note lengths - This time they can be crotchets, minims and quavers (1/2 beats). Melody length - 8 beats long again.Shape - This melody can be any shape but choose a different shape for this melody .Last note must be C.
