Using a SCALE

• Adjusting a scale uses a special ruller known as a scale

Page 14: 018 design-studio

Engineers scales are shown in decimal feet and are used to represent large parcels of land.

Page 15: 018 design-studio

Architect’s scale is in inches

Topography: changes in elevation

Page 22: 018 design-studio

The approximate spread of a tree canopy is estimated by doubling the trunk size (shown in inches) converting to feet and drawing a circle of that diameter in feet.

What you need :

• Topographic plan with all built features incld: drive, house, walks, trees & shrub masses. Put to 1/8 scale. If large acreage either enlarge area near house or put to 10’ scale.

• 30-60-90 triangle & 45-45-990 triangle• A straight edge T-square• A flat place to work!

Page 30: 018 design-studio

What you need :

• Drafting tissue (white trash-18” long and 24” long) for overlays

• Engineers scale• Architects scale• Colored pencils• Tape measure (25’hard) and flexible tape

measure (200 or 200’) for larger areas• Hand held level (per 013)

Page 31: 018 design-studio

The Design Studio Process :• Design Studio works best if you arrive with

concepts of design well in hand and started as overlays. You must bring completed base sheet with site analysis! If you are tentative about drawing, just come…but have you base sheet complete.

• Photos of your property well organized into areas so I’ll understand your project.

Page 32: 018 design-studio

The Design Studio Process :• Design Studio consists of the instructor (s)

visiting each person to review their personal project. This process initially takes 15 mins PER PERSON the first sweep around the room. I’ll give you things to work on related to your individual project needs.

• The second sweep, I spend 20-30 per person and actually draw with you special areas so you will become familiar with the scale & technique.

Page 33: 018 design-studio

The Design Studio Process :• This process continues for approximately 2

days…or until you glaze over and go home!• We will have dinner together both nights as

a group and perhaps include a slide show, visit to a garden, etc to recharge the design batteries.

• You will leave with more homework and a preliminary master plan with detailed areas beginning to be fleshed out…
