Zumbro washout th

Candidates make last push before polls openBy Heather J. [email protected]

With time running out before Tuesday’s election, candidates are crisscrossing the area to fire up supporters, as an army of volunteers knocks on doors and calls voters. On Saturday, Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak joined DFL 1st District Rep. Tim Walz and others for a get-out-the-vote rally in front of the DFL Olmsted County office. Speaking to a crowd of more than 100 on a sunny morning, Walz said it’s time to defy the media pundits who say Democrats are not fired up for this election.“There has been a big media storm to try and say you’re not motivated, you are not enthusiastic, you don’t want to vote, you’re frustrated,” Walz said. “You know what? We’ll see Tuesday how that works.”Meanwhile Walz’s Republican opponent, Randy Demmer, continued his Heartland Values Tour, making a stop in each of the 1st Congressional District’s 22 counties in the lead-up to the election. As of Saturday, he had already made 15 stops, including in Kasson, Mankato and Owatonna.Demmer’s campaign manager, Jason Flohrs, said that at every stop Demmer emphasized how critical it is that supporters turn out at the polls.Demmer “is always closing with the message, ‘It’s not over,’” Flohrs said. “The campaign so far has just been setting up for the election on Tuesday, and we need your help. We need you to go to the phone banks and make calls. You need to talk to your friends and neighbors and help get out the vote.”Both DFL candidate Mark Dayton and GOP candidate Tom Emmer plan to do last-minute fly-arounds of the state, with both slated to visit the Rochester airport today.Independence Party candidate Tom Horner has launched a bus tour and planned a rally in Rochester’s Peace Plaza during the lunch hour today.Demmer and Walz will both be making stops this evening at sites near Rochester International Airport.
