Solution …

• Let us assume that the amount deposited was Rs. 100.

• Try with options. 100 + 8000 = 8100 (at 16% per annum).

• 100 * 9 * 9 = 8100 (at 1600% )

• So answer is 1600% answer.


A person invested Rs.20000 in abank which is offering 10% per annum simple interest. After

two years he withdrew the money from the bank and deposited the total amount in another

bank which gives an interest rate of r% pa. compounded annually. After 2 years he

received an amount of Rs.2460 more than what he had invested in that bank. Find the value of

r.(1) 5 (2) 10 (3) 15 (4) 12


Solution

• 20000 + simple interest = 24000

• This money was invested in another bank.

• Let us try with options:

• Try with 5%, we get interest of 2460. Answer.


A man borrowed Rs.55000 from two banks under compound interest, compounded

annually. Onebank charged interest at the rate of 8% per

yearand the other bank at 12% per year. If at the

endof the year the man paid Rs.4900 as the total

interest to the two banks, how much loan did he take from the first bank?

(1) Rs.47500 (2) Rs.42500(3) Rs.32500 (4) Rs.12500


Solution

• Let us find the average interest rate:

• 4900/55000 * 100 = 8.9%

• The ratio is 31:9• 31/40 * 55000• = 42625

• Let us assume that the shopkeeper buys 100 kg @ 100. He gets 120 KG. for 100. Now 120 kg will be sold as :

• 120 * 100/80 = 150. thus he obtains Rs. 100 @ 100 per kg. Thus he is earning 50% profit on cost. Answer.


A salesman used to get a commission of 12% on his total sates. A new policy is introduced

and henow gets a fixed sum of Rs.4680 and 8%

commission on total sales made in excess of Rs,16000 The salesman’s total sales for the previous month exceeded Rs.16000 His total sales for this month was the same as that of

last month and his revenue this month is Rs.1000 more than that of Iastmonth. Find his

total sales (in Rs.) this month.(1) 40000 ‘(2) 56000 (3) 60000 (4) 70000


Solution

• Let us assume that his sale is X.

• .12X + 1000 = 4680 + .08(X-16000)

• .12X + 1000 = 4680 + .08X -1280

• .04X = 4680 – 2280

• X = 2400 / .04

• X = 60000 or the sale was of Rs. 60000. Answer.


Merchant A sold an article after giving a 30%discount. Merchant B sold the same article aftergiving three successive discounts of 10% each.

Merchant C sold the same article after giving successive discounts of 15%, 10% and 5%. If the marked prices of the three merchants were

thesame, find the ascending order of their selling

Solution

• Let the selling price be 100.

• Selling price by 1st seller = 70

• By 2nd seller = 100*.9*.9*.9 =72.9

• by 3rd seller = 100 *.85*.90*.95 = 72.67

• Thus correct order is ACB . Answer.


The price of an item went up by 25% and a family decided to reduce its consumption so that the total expenditure would increase by

only 8% as compared to the previous expenditure. If 25 kg of the item was

consumed previously, then how many kg of the item should be consumed now?

(1) 25 kg (2) 20 kg (3) 22.4 kg (4) 21.6 kg


Solution

• Let us assume that the earlier rate was Rs. 100

• Total expenditure = 2500

• New rate = 125

• New consumption: 2500*1.08

• =2700

• Thus new consumption = 2700/125 = 21.6 kg. answer.


Solve it ….

• A salesman used to get 8% on the total sales as commission. Under a new policy he now gets a fixed amount Rs.2000 and 5% commission on any amount of sales above Rs.10000. The salesman thus got Rs.540 more this month. What were his total sales for this month?

• (1) Rs.20000 (2) Rs.26000• (3) Rs.32000 (4) Rs.35000


Solution

• Let us assume the the sales was of Rs. X.

• .08X +540 = 2000+ .05(X – 10000)

• .08X + 540 = 2000+.05X – 500

• .03X = 2000 – 500 – 540

• X = 960 / .03

• X = 32000 answer.


Find the length of a train running at 45 kmph which can cross a bridge

of length 250 m. in 38 seconds.

• Convert speed into meters / seconds

• = 45*5/18 = 12.5 m per second

• Speed travelled in 38 seconds :

• 38 *12.5 = 475

• The distance of train is 475 – 250 = 225 answer.


Find the time taken by a train of length 100 m running at a Speed of 72 kmph to cross another train of

length 200 m running at a speed of 63 kmph in the same direction.

• Add the two lengths = 100 + 200 = 300• Find the difference of speed = 72 – 63 = 9• Convert speed into meters / seconds • = 9 *5/18 = 2.5 • Divide length by speed = 300/2.5 = 120 seconds

or 2 minutes. Answer.


Two trains running at 63 kmph and45 kmph cross each other in 15

seconds, when they run in opposite direction. When they run in the

same direction, a person from the faster train observes that he crossed the other train in 40 seconds. Find the lengths of

the two trains. - -


Solution

• Let us add their speed

• 63 + 45 = 108 km per hour

• Convert it into m/s = 108*5/18 = 30 m./s

• In 15 seconds they will cover 15*30 = 450 meters. Thus their combined length is 450 meters. We cannot find the length of the individual trains. Answer.
