Health First: Al Ahli Holding Group, the holding arm of the leading multi-disciplined organization based in the United Arab Emirates, and Gold’s Gym International, the world’s leading authority on health and fitness, have recently announced the signing of a master franchise agreement to open 26 gyms in major Arabian Peninsula markets. The initial schedule is to develop within the UAE, with a heavy emphasis on the capital, Abu Dhabi, then to proceed onto other Emirates. With this announcement, couch-potatoes will become a dying breed.

Dreams Come Alive: The play “Zayed and the Dream” continues to be shown outside the UAE, following its great success in Abu Dhabi and Beirut. This work is an illuminating artistic vision inspired by the march of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of UAE, and validated by the authenticity of the region’s heritage and roots. Two essential values have been achieved through the performance of this play: artistic value and historical value. The piece carries traditional values that were inserted artistically into the play for the benefit of society, which in turn will reform itself through upholding these values and appreciating this art. The theatrical work “Zayed and the Dream” is creatively produced by the Caracalla Theatre and just last month, was shown to audiences in Paris.

SPAIN IN A bottle

Dear Ed,

I buy a lot of things at IKEA and I’m sure most of their staff recognizes me. But there is one thing that bothers me every time. At the restaurant check-out counter in Marina Mall, they have mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise in squeeze bottles. While mustard and ketchup can be kept at room temperature for a while, mayo can’t. IKEA should do something to keep the mayo cool.

One idea: keep the bottle in a small container with ice cubes. More work, but you’ll get more appreciation from your customers.

ida (i-still-love-ikea)

Dear Editor,

Why is it that mothers and fathers think that it is OK for their children to misbehave in public?? It drives me crazy when I go with my own (well behaved children I might add) to the cinema and we come across families with unruly young children, monkeying around and disturbing other viewers. Come on people; get your children under control! Or just stay at home with them.

Dear Tempo,

I had a nice experience at a hotel in Dubai recently. It was called the Media Rotana. Everything was nice—including the price. And the customer service was exceptional. But…the water in my bathroom took a long time to come out hot. This is a shame because I had to wait for a long time until the hot water came out for my shower. I confess that I wasted so much water and I didn’t enjoy it. I hope the hotel, and all others, eliminate this problem.

The Qibab Art Gallery welcomes viewers to witness “Magic Forest”, an event on the inspirational works of Ikuko Deguchi-Peters, an artist of Japanese origin, who has been painting for over 30 years.

Ikuko does not sketch but paints directly on to the canvas producing fascinating abstract art. Her series of painting include themes of Flight, Origin and, Moon and Water among many others. She started painting ‘water’ after she went diving in the Red Sea. Underwater she felt isolated from the real world and a freedom to move without thinking of body weight. The paintings of Water transform the beauty of the underwater world for preservation. She uses her work to inspire others to avoid destruction of nature.

Using old traditional Japanese painting materials combined with acrylic colours and many other multi media, she will conduct a live performance of her new technique letting the viewer’s imagination to take over in interpreting her work. Her work is solitary but it reaches out to the world. The colours and the movements have to be seen and experienced. So all you art lovers should head to the Qibab Art Gallery and enjoy being absorbed in the Magic Forest, a treat worth your time.

For the love of movies

Reema Al Majed is a busy body - when she is not studying media sciences at Zayed University, she has her hands full organizing and planning out film festivals like the recent Zayed University Film Festival (ZUFF) which focused on providing a platform for young filmmakers to exhibit their craft. How does she do it all? Tempo sat with her for a bite and found out why she is so passionate about the art of filmmaking.

tempo: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

reema Al majed: I am 21 years old. I’m an Emirati girl, born in Abu Dhabi, but I have lived in Dubai for the most part of my life. I moved to Abu Dhabi when I started university which was almost four years ago.

t: Did you always wish to become a professional in the field of Media Sciences? Were your parents supportive of your decision?

r: Ever since I started school I knew I wanted to do something great. I just never knew exactly what it was that I wanted to do. Although my family didn’t expect me to come up with such a huge project, when they saw Zayed University Film Festival actually happening they were so proud and extremely supportive. They never told me that there was something I couldn’t

do in my chosen professional field, but they always advised me to be careful and cautious, and always stand up for my beliefs.

t: How did you get the idea to organize a film festival? Who else was involved in the process?

r: Last fall, I worked as a publicist assistant in the Middle East International Film Festival. It was the first time I got involved in the world of films and filmmaking. It triggered something inside me, like I wanted to learn more and I didn’t want my experience to end with the festival. One day, out of nowhere it just hit me, ‘why don’t I create my very own film festival?’ After thinking about it for a long time and researching for hours, I decided that it should be a film festival for students exclusively. When I knew exactly what I wanted, I went to group of friends, who I knew where going to be supportive and helpful. My project partner, Alyazyah helped me with the initial stages of planning process, and I also was able to get so much help and support from a group of guys and girls who worked very hard in making this festival possible. I would like to mention a few names and also state the fact that I couldn’t have done it without their hard work: Maisoon, Noura, Waleed, Rahed and Fahmi. They all assisted me throughout the process of making this festival a successful one.

t: Why, in your opinion, was it necessary to have a university based film festival portraying the work of young filmmakers?

r: The reason why I thought this festival should be for students is the fact that there is hardly any event that is dedicated to support ONLY young filmmakers around the Middle East and North Africa. There is so much young talent in the Arab world, and I wanted all the students to feel like this is the place that will support them through their journey in becoming professionals in the industry. t: What do you like to do in your free time?

r: Watch films! I love watching really good films, sometimes to learn something new and other times just for the pleasure of watching a good movie.

8 9www.abudhabitempo.com

t: What is your aim in life? Where do you see yourself in the coming decade?

r: I would like to complete my masters in film directing, and maybe make a really good film like those that I enjoy watching today. I really don’t know what to expect, but I hope it will be something meaningful. I also imagine Zayed University Film Festival becoming one of the most important festivals not only in the Middle East but also around the globe. t: Who are your favourite filmmakers of our time and which of their movies are your favourites? Any recent films you really liked?

r: My favorite director of our time would definitely be Baz Luhrmann. Although he has directed a few films, he has managed to stun me every single time. His best work to date would be Moulin Rouge - my all time favourite film- and Australia which is another favourite. I’m also a big fan of Tim Burton. I feel like he has a crazy imagination which I absolutely love, and finally Steven Spielberg. I recently watched The Hurt Locker by Kathryn Bigelow and I really liked the realness of the film. t: If you could re-make one movie which one would it be? Would you choose different actors to play the title roles? How would you give it your signature touch?

r: Honestly I think about that all the time, but right now I really feel like changing the latest James Bond films. Daniel Craig just doesn’t strike me as someone embodying a James Bond persona! I would really love to see George Clooney playing Mr. Bond, and if it was

up to me I would have picked him a long time ago. Regarding my signature touch, I think I’m still trying to figure that one out. t: How was it like finally seeing the ZU Film Festival 2010 come alive? Tell us a little about your film selection process.

r: It was like a dream come true. I couldn’t believe that there were a huge number of celebrity guests and important people in the media industry who came to support this event and the young filmmakers involved. The film selection process started by contacting the universities that offer film courses around the Middle East and North Africa. Then as we started to receive films, the media faculty in ZU sat down to watch the entire collection we got from all around the Arab world. We ended up with 12 final films which were sent to three professional judges in the film industry who choose three deserving winners. And that’s how we got to the final films! (Smiles) t: Many youngsters today find it hard to juggle studies and creative endeavours. What would be your advice to them?

r: My advice would be the exact words one of my favorite professors told me once - School is important to get you through life, but there is more to life then just focusing only on your final grades. Now I don’t want anyone to get me wrong because I do believe school is important, however, I think that you only get practical know-how when you are out there experiencing and learning from life. Students should care about their final grades, but their lives shouldn’t revolve around grades only. That’s just my personal opinion.

moka cafe: seafood salad kInG!CITY

Mall hopping is very taxing and often mall-goers need refueling in between the flurry of shopping activity. Moka Cafe in Abu Dhabi Mall is one such food haven where prices are reasonable and the food is great. Well, almost. Whether you select a sea view seat or sit at the entrance towards the mall shops, you can’t escape the feeling that a delectable treat is coming your way. Friends had informed us of their global menu. And it is...global. Mexican nachos, Chinese spring rolls, Indian batata vada, and Singaporian delicacies. Alas, we diet conscious (read picky) eaters chose the Seafood salad. The pasta was warm, the sauce was thick and creamy and their portions were pretty large for us gals. Mind you we were hungry so we did finish it all! The café is worth a visit if you are in the mall and feel the need to try out something new.

Far from being a flash in the pan, for those of you who think café food is meant for the usual pizza and pasta pit stoppers, you’re in for a big surprise at Cinnamon City Cafe! This small and cozy Canadian café has managed to maintain their high standards of food and friendliness to the hilt. With a great introduction to a fully fledged dining option, Cinnamon City has newly introduced 25 great additions to their menu. The new upsized combo meals offer fairly big lunch and dinner portions so be sure to work up a healthy appetite before you go. With the specially baked cinnamon Panini bread, the café offers delicious new varieties of chicken and beef burgers which is a must try in the menu. The scrumptious desserts also include different types of cinnamon rolls with the special dates cinnamon roll highly recommended by the chef.

askUis white chocolate really chocolate? (sara b)

Well, technically white chocolate is NOT really chocolate! White chocolate contains cocoa butter, which is a product of the cocoa bean that is also used to produce chocolate. Most chocolates are made up of cocoa solids which contain a chemical compound called ‘theobromine’. Theobromine is what’s responsible for the brown colour, ranging from light brown in milk chocolate to darker shades in dark chocolate. Since white chocolate contains cocoa butter instead of cocoa solids derived from chocolate liquor (an essential part of all chocolate), the US Food and Drug Administration does not define it as chocolate. Still, why deprive yourself of a good thing? Last time we checked, Milky Bars were top sellers at local groceries.

Karam: Isn’t the iPad just an oversized iPod? I mean there are no other benefits, right?

mo: It has more memory, a bigger screen so it’s easier to use the internet browser and there’s less chance of typing errors. It’s more like a computer and an iPod.

Karam: But, whatever ‘touch’ products Apple make seems to be fragile. Does the iPad break/damage as easily as the other products?

mo: Actually its very strong for its size, I’ve dropped it a few times already and no damage was made to it.

Karam: But when laptops where made, they were built so that the screen is protected. Does the iPad screen get dirty at times?

mo: Not very dirty, maybe a few finger prints but that can easily be cleaned.

Karam: So what’s the deal? Would you recommend people to buy it?

mo: Yes, I would totally recommend it, especially to all of those gadget lovers. It’s an innovative version of the common laptop, it’s an amazing creation.

Dry eraser board: Use a dry erase board instead of paper, this works

great for messages and makes for great homework helpers.

Coffee Cup sleeve: Make a coffee cup cozy or sleeve from two layers of denim. Reduce the number of paper sleeves you use at your local cafe or slip on your own cups or mugs to protect your hands. Measure around the cup, cut and sew with a standard seam allowance.

Denim Coasters: Cut two squares from the legs and insert a layer of quilt batting between the denim. Turn under raw edges and sew closed. Stitch a decorative shape in the middle of the coaster to keep batting in place.

reuse take-out container: When you eat out and take something with you, more and likely you have gotten containers. These containers work great to organize your nails, screws and other small objects.

“I have lived in Abu Dhabi for four years now. And I am happy to report that my family has recently joined me in the Capital city so I am busy showing them around. It took me a span of four years to find suitable (read affordable) lodgings for them in the city.

“I don’t have big dreams to conquer the world; I just hope to be a successful person in life. My dream is to build house of my own in Sudan and then of course invest, run and own a business.

“Living in Abu Dhabi is great! The city well planned, and major locations are convenient to reach but what really worries me is rising prices and increased housing rents. I guess every expat worries about such things.

“I must add though, the city provides some excellent opportunities to see major events and also meet renowned personalities with whom we can’t rub shoulders back home. I am talking about global events like Formula 1, European Cup etc.

“In my free time, I like to do some photography and one good thing about living in Abu Dhabi for an amateur photographer like me is that they get to meet world-famous photographers in the cultural workshops organized by arts and cultural societies. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Steve McCurry, my favourite photographer. It was a memorable experience.

“I would like to leave you with these words: It’s not how much we have but how much we enjoy life, which contributes to our happiness.”

2) Which movie is the best remake of our times in your opinion and why?

4) What is the one thing about guys/girls which irritates you the most?

3)Why is the sky so high?

Jair: 3 Doors Down - Here Without You. I love this song! It reminds me of a very important person in my life.

Jair: Clash of the Titans, because I am an action fan and the special effects in this movie were superb.

Jair: Ever wondered that maybe the sky is just exactly where it’s suppose to be and that maybe, just maybe, we are too down below?

mala: The sky is high, so that birds don’t bump their heads.

Jair: I detest self-centred girls. Why does everything have to be about them all the time? It’s like a disease. Once they catch it, it just spreads.

mala: If given a choice, I would like to record the title song of Titanic in my voice. My Heart Will Go On is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

mala: The best remake of our times, I feel, is King Kong. It has the best graphics and captivating camera work.

mala: One characteristic which really irritates me in men is their possessiveness. I think it is due to lack of trust!

ecovoice Overfishing is one of the biggest threats

to marine ecosystems. Today, over 80% of the world’s fish stocks are fully exploited, overexploited,

depleted or recovering from depletion.

The UAE has a large appetite for fish, with many species being taken out well beyond sustainable levels. Studies show that the overall number of commercial fish in the country has declined by 80% in the last 30 years.

Hamour, a highly favoured fish in the UAE, is being overfished 7 times beyond its sustainable level, with a decline of 87-92% since 1978, putting it at the top of the overfished species list.

Emirates Wildlife Society, in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature, has produced the first consumer guide to sustainable fish in the country, and in the region ! In it we classified 19 popular fish types into 3 categories, based on stock assessment studies that have been carried out by fisheries scientists and biologists. The guide assigns a colour to each of those categories with the colour red (shown below) distinguishing overfished types that include many of the popularly consumed fish. Office Ergonomics is the utmost thing to be considered for maintaining good ergonomics at the office. An example of Office Ergonomics is to have a better view of the monitor and see the images clearly if you take good care in selecting the right level of illumination and place it appropriately.

Feasible solutions of office ergonomics Disorders :

1.Try to vary your tasks and Office Ergonomics, so that you get ample time to recover from the outcome of your activity. Different ways are being practiced to provide recovery time for overused muscles.

2.Design your Ergonomic Office in such a way that you can easily change your working postures according to your convenience. It is always safe to select adjustable furniture for the workstation that allows you to shift to different seated postures every time you want to. This helps different muscle groups to provide support while others rest.

3.Your work area should be spacious enough to let you use the mouse with either hand alternately. Thus the tendons and muscles of the free hand get enough relaxation.

4.Reduce your dependence on the mouse and use

more of shortcut keys. For example, you can use Ctrl+S

to save, Ctrl+P to print etc. Certain jobs do require more

dependence on the mouse. Users in such professions

should learn to use more shortcut keys.

5.Jobs that involve more repeated tasks or prolonged

static postures may lead to muscular strain. The users

should forcefully take several short breaks or relaxed

pauses. The users should stand, stretch, and move

around during such breaks. This increases blood

circulation and gives enough time for the muscles

to relax.

6.Try to mix computer tasks and non-computer tasks

alternately in all possible situations. This encourages

the movement of different parts of the body by using

different muscle groups.

office ergonomics environment Quick tips

1.You should design your office in such a way that the

glare from overhead lights, desk lamps, and windows is

reduced to a maximum.

2.Your office room should be designed in such a way as

to maintain appropriate air circulation.

3.Do not sit directly under air conditioning vents that

push air right on top of you.

Art-iculate

I just opened my latest solo exhibition this Thursday at Tashkeel in Dubai and considering the last few exhibitions I had, I anticipated a large crowd show up for the opening, but that did not happen. There was enough tv coverage, media and press, but still this did not contribute to a great number of people coming to the exhibition.

I tried to investigate briefly what the reason was, and it hit me, there were way too many events happening at the same time, the poor art lovers don’t have enough time to go to each and every event they want to go to, and on the other hand Galleries do spend the time or have dialogue with one another to work on a certain schedule to at least work together on their openings rather than each cast their line at the same time and see who gets the bigger fish.

Assuming all the artwork on exhibition is good (including mine), and all the galleries have amply marketed their events, then what is the reason for the low number of attendees? Could it be the hundreds of events that are being held, that the viewer is bombarded with all this visual debris that he or she no longer sees or reads these invitations, or is it that the art has nothing to do with the opening, where in fact it is the service and drinks offered by the hosting gallery.

Have we only used art as an invitation card to free drinks where people come to the openings but never really see the art but see who serves the better drink?Or is just too much of one thing making it not important?

ComputerIs your computer stalling, freezing, crashing, and bombarding you with popups and error messages? Learn how to eliminate these problems by following the steps below:

Step 1: Defragment your hard drive. This will organize your hard drive, allowing your computer to spend less time accessing files. There is a free tool built into Windows that allows you to defragment.

Step 2: Clean your temp directory. Files are placed into this directory by your operating system, but instead of staying in there temporarily, they often just don’t delete like they’re supposed to, and they bog down your system. Navigate to C:/Documents and Settings/(Your User Name)/Local Settings/Temp and delete everything, and then empty your Recycle Bin.

Step 3: Clean your registry. Your registry is a collection of keys that contain settings pertinent to the operation of every aspect of your computer. Over time, it becomes bloated and unorganized, and it can cause your computer to hang, freeze, and crash. You can get a free scan of your registry at speedycomputer.org.

Step 4: Install anti-virus software. Everybody knows that viruses are bad, yet many people fail to adequately protect themselves. Just search on Google for antivirus software, you can usually download it directly from the manufacturer’s website, without any waiting for CDs. A lot of them use McAfee, but there are lots of options out there.

Step 5: Remove spyware and adware. Spyware and adware are programs that sit on your computer, can deliver ads when you don’t want them, or even worse, compromise your personal information and help someone steal your identity. Often, a user does not even know if their computer is infected.

Justin Bieber has taken the world by storm! The extremely talented, young Canadian musician is earning rave reviews from the who’s who in the music industry ever since his debut hit single “One Time”

began dominating air waves. Bieber rose to fame purely by YouTube references and has totaled over 10,000,000 views of his spin on

hits by Ne-Yo, Stevie Wonder and most notably, Usher.

The Grammy award winning Usher, who heard Bieber’s take on his own classics, had Bieber flown into Atlanta, Georgia for a meeting from his hometown of Stratford, Ontario and was immediately taken in by Bieber’s massive talent. Usher was beyond impressed taking Bieber under his wing and immediately signing him to a record deal, beating

out Justin Timberlake. Since then, Bieber-mania took off and has never

looked back.

Bieber’s debut album, “My World”, drove teeny-boppers into a frenzy and went

certified platinum in the United States and Canada. It also featured 7 hits on

Billboard’s top 100 chart, a first for any artist via their debut album. The 15 year old Bieber

performed for US President Barack Obama at the White House for Christmas, took part in

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve Programme and was even invited to provide his vocals for We Are The World 25, featuring an ensemble

of today’s top musicians, recreating the Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie hit for Haiti Earthquake relief. Being described as a ‘’Prodigy” by his tremendously gifted and celebrated mentor, Usher, we expect to see Bieber mania around for a long time!

• Remember the food pyramid? It’s a great place to start, eat more foods from the bottom (grains), then add vegetables and protein, fruits, dairy and finally sparingly use fatty foods. Many places have free handouts. It’s a great tool to have for reference on the refrigerator.

• Variety in your diet is very important. It helps ensure that you’re gathering the daily doses of recommended vitamins and minerals every day from the foods you eat. It also helps prevent boredom with your diet which can lead to straying.

• Bring on the water! Staying hydrated has many benefits for the healthy pregnancy, including avoidance of early labor, healthier skin (meaning more elastic), and general decrease in pregnancy symptoms that are annoying (constipation, swelling, etc.). Juice has a time and a place but the majority of your fluids should be water. Other drinks like soda, coffee, etc. should not be included in your daily count of 6-8 eight ounce glasses a day.

• Eat foods that remember where they came from! The closer to the source of the original food the better. For examples: green beans that are fresh contain more of the good stuff than those in a can; bananas are better than fried banana chips or a banana split!

• Protein is the building block of every cell in your baby’s body. Some studies have indicated that adequate protein intake (defined as 75 grams a day or more) can protect you against problems with ecclampsia, pregnancy induced hypertension and other disorders. It also ensures a great start for your baby.

Alright ladies – let’s get right down to it! The coming months are lined up with some classical concerts, gala evenings and star studded affairs. Who knows? Maybe friends will surprise you with tickets! To avoid last minute scrambling to malls to find something suitable to wear Tempo has brought you some classy and stylish dresses along with affordable neckwear to keep your evening look decent and elegant.

You would think that assigning tickets to people in a movie

theatre is a good thing. In principle it is: you can buy your

tickets ahead of time. For the theatre it’s a great way of

keeping tabs on who’s supposed to be in the theatre. It

prevents ‘movie jumping’--you know, sampling a bit of this

movie, then moving to the next one to see if it’s a better

movie and so on, and also protects against ‘movie squatting’;

the practice of watching a movie, then sneaking into

another one, and then another etc so by the end of it you’d

have watched three movies for the price on one.

But in practice, numbered tickets are bad news. In the good

days my friend and I walked into a theatre, picked the seats

we wanted, and voila. Now, we have to grope in the dark and

walk over people’s toes to reach our destination. If we go

early to avoid the groping part, we’re still not able to avoid

the people trampling all over our toes part.

Then you get those situations when you walk to your seat

and there’s a solemn couple who look about as movable as

the pyramids. You don’t want to mess with them, and you

call the movie attendant. He walks up to them, ducking his

head (because the movie has already started and everyone

is glaring at you for causing a commotion) and he asks

them to move to their seats. They show him their tickets and

then point to where a group of hooligans are sitting with

their feet up, shooting popcorn pellets at their neighbors.

The attendant walks up to the hooligans and they all start

arguing loudly. He calls his manager to haul them out of

the theatre, then comes back to tell the couple their seats

are now free. The couple then move—very reluctantly

(your seats have a better view) and finally you are able to

transplant yourself on your numbered seats. Problem is that

by then the first 20 minutes of the movie have gone by and

you spend the rest of the time trying to sort out who did

what to whom and why. All of this because of those blasted

numbered tickets!

All languages borrow from other tongues and adopt foreign words that later become part of its standard lexicon. What a weird journey foreign words take until they are integrated into part of the language!

Recently at a coffee morning with friends, we discussed the funny sounding word ‘barruka’ which in Arabic means ‘wig’. ‘Barruka’ is derived from the French word for wig: ‘perruque.’ For fun we tried to imagine and reconstruct the evolution of this word across the eras in ‘Arabia’: ‘Aatini [give me...] beerook’ (trying to pronounce the original word)... then somewhere down the line it changes into something less tongue twisting, “Aatini ‘barok’.....then lazier still into “Aatini barook’...then finally in the 21st century into its current popular form: ‘Aatini baruka’. OK, so you’ve figured out that the letter ‘p’ is not quite at home in the Arabic language. That explains why alot of Arabic speakers who don’t speak English well sometimes pronounce Peter Pan as ‘Beeter Ban.’

More on the fascinating topic of etymology: how about the Arabic words for driver (in the ‘chauffeur’ context)? There’s ‘sawaq’ which literally means ‘driver’ (ie literally ‘person who drives’). Then throughout the Arabian Peninsula you come across two other colourful words that mean driver (as in ‘chauffeur’): these are ‘shoofayr’ which is derived from the French , and the other is ‘draywel’ which comes from the word...you guessed it, ‘driver’!

Off topic--- a question emailed in from Emma B: “How do you say thank you in Arabic to a woman, to a man and to a group of people? Does the word change?” Emma, you could say “shukran lak’ (to a man), ‘shukran lik’ (to a woman) or ‘shukran lakum (to a group)’, but the easiest thing to do is to simply say ‘shukran’ (thank you) in all the situations; works as well, believe me.

“However, the picture maybe very pleasant for a privileged

to voice a small concern about what I have noticed, we women

who are on our husband’s visa are paid very low wages. It

forces me to think that the general idea is that expatriate

wives are working only to escape the boredom of sitting inside

four walls! To add to my confusion, I have browsed through

many jobsites, scanned through appointment sections of

newspapers, I very rarely see someone ask for Masters in a

related discipline. My next concern is that people without

UAE experience are unwelcome. And that some consultancies

advertise expired vacancies! Is this done to give a pleasant

Did you know that the Arabian horse is one of the oldest horse breeds, with archaeological evidence dating back 4,500 years? For something as ancient as that, myths have certainly played an important role in keeping their aura alive! For several years now Arabian horses have varied in their ancient myths and legends, particularly about their origins. Tempo’s favorite mythical variant is of the origin of “Al Khamsa” which later came to be known as the infamous Arabian horses we know today.

Although there are different discrepancies to this story, this one stands with the implication it’s had in real life. The myth tells us how Prophet Muhammad chose his foundation mares by a test of their dedication and courage. The most widespread version states that after a long and tiresome journey through the desert, Muhammad turned his herd loose to go in search of drinking water. Before the herd could reach the water, Muhammad called for the horses to return to him. Only five mares responded and galloped back to their master despite their thirst and desperation. Talk about loyalty! These mares later became the prophet’s favorite and came to be known as Al Khamsa which means the number five in Arabic. Although Al Khamsa is nothing more than a fragment of one’s imagination, some breeders believe that the modern Bedouin Arabian horses are actually descendants from these mares. The other variants also include the tale of King Solomon, time of Ishmael and Bedouin tales.

Which mythical tale do you think the Arabian horses actually originated from? Write to us [email protected] and tell us what you think!

Dear Um Ayman,

I am 17 years old and having a hard time with my mother. It seems the older I get the nosier she becomes. My mother wants to know who my friends are, where we are going and what we chat about on the internet. She calls me when I’m with my friends and gets upset if I don’t answer my mobile. She has asked me many times to include her in my Facebook and I have told her that it’s not cool to invite your parents and that all my friends don’t have their parents on their Facebook. Now with summer round the corner, my mother has started to call her friends and ask them if they can find me some work (unpaid) because she thinks I might get myself in trouble if I spend my time with friends. I sometimes think that my mother just doesn’t want me to have any fun in life. Help, I need her to back off and give me more space!!

Khaled, TCA

Dear Khaled,

I have two sons--my eldest son Ayman turned 19 recently and my other teenage son is 14. So I understand perfectly what your mother is going through and why she is acting the way she is. I can assure you that annoying as her behaviour is to you; it is also very well intentioned. Something happens to young people when they become teenagers--they start developing their own identities. Even though this is a totally natural part of life it can be disconcerting to parents because we believe that this is the time that you--our children--are most susceptible to peer pressure and negative influences. We try to instill good values and responsible behaviour in the hope that you can think independently of the ‘crowd’. Khaled, in your email you have told me all about your mother, but you have not told me much about yourself. Are you giving reason for your mother to be worried about you? I encourage you to establish an open relationship with your mother, and explain your concerns and hopes. Be responsible and mature, be caring and honest, and take care of your obligations at home and at school.... and I’m sure your mother will not only ‘back off’ but give you ‘lots more space.’

Annual leaveI will be going back to the United States in a couple of weeks for a month. I have not been back there in over a year. In addition to reconnecting with family and friends, I also have to take care of the personal business junk that inevitably piles up when one is away. I own a house, a car and have other financial obligations. It is orders of magnitude more difficult to manage these things from abroad. I now wish I had only a suitcase when I first arrived on the Emirate’s shores.

There is an old saying “You can never go home again”. Roughly meaning that the traveler and/or the ones the traveler left back at home have fundamentally changed to the point where things just aren’t the same. I am concerned about this. I want things to be the same but I fear they will not. My experiences as an expat in the U.A.E. and those of my significant others back in America have profoundly differed in the last two years.

I have new attitudes and a fresh appreciation of the world. I hope these are understood by my “homeys”.

So my excitement of going back to my homeland is mixed with some anxiety. I am flexible and hope for the best. I will let you know how it goes. My next column will be from the state of Utah, U.S.A.

grounding skills

For many years, people with terminal illnesses were an embarrassment for doctors. Someone who could not be cured was evidence of the doctors’ fallibility, and as a result the doctors regularly shunned the dying with the excuse that there was nothing more that could be done (and that there was plenty of other demand on the doctors’ time).

Elizabeth Kübler-Ross was a doctor in Switzerland who railed against this unkindness and spent a lot of

time with dying people, both comforting and studying them. She wrote a book, called ‘On Death and Dying’ which included a cycle of emotional states that is often referred to (but not exclusively called) the Grief Cycle.

In the ensuing years, it was noticed that this emotional cycle was not exclusive just to the terminally ill, but also other people who were affected by bad news, such as losing their jobs or otherwise being negatively affected by change. The important factor is not that the change is good or bad, but that they perceive it as a significantly negative event.

People need a PLAN to manage the Grief Cycle triggers that they are aware of or come up with contingency plans for those events that come up without warning.

To manage your responses, you must first recognize them. Become aware that you are beginning to be triggered. Acknowledge what is going on. Identify your feelings. Stop the automatic process and think of your plan. Calm yourself in healthy ways; tune into your body, breathe slowly from your diaphragm, tell yourself reassuring thoughts, and concentrate on relaxing tensed muscles. Use grounding skills (see below) to keep yourself in the “here and now.” And don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

• Sit in a relaxed position, with your eyes open and feet flat on the floor

• Consciously become aware of everything you see around you, and take inventory of each item, naming what you see aloud or quietly in your mind.

• Notice every sound around you and identify what you hear.

• Describe what you taste. Sometimes chewing gum or sucking on hard candy can help you focus on your sense of taste.

• Identify what you smell and describe it

• Describe what you are touching with your hands and your body, being aware of the details of texture, hardness, temperature, and shape of what you are touching.

Practice this exercise several times a day, so that it becomes very familiar to you. Make use of grounding whenever you feel anxious or have difficulty staying in the present.

By Samantha DavisLifecoach livesmartreducInG your VehIcle’s fuel consumpTIon

The following tips will help you to reduce your vehicle’s fuel consumption - saving you money and reducing your carbon footprint:

Check tyre pressures regularly (e.g. every time you fill up). Under-inflated and worn tyres increase drag on the road.

Keep windows closed or slightly open on highways (at speeds of 80-120 km/h). Open windows cause air drag, reducing mileage by up to 10%.

Only use the air conditioner if absolutely necessary. It reduces fuel economy by 10-20% and diminishes engine power by 6-12%.

Reduce excess weight of the vehicle by removing any unnecessary items from inside the vehicle or it’s boot.

Try to keep loads to a minimum, over-laden vehicles are heavy on fuel.

Be aware that roof racks, trailers and bike racks increase wind resistance and thus reduce fuel economy.

Don’t allow your fuel tank to be overfilled. Stop at the first

automatic “click” of the nozzle. Overfilling results in fuel spillage.

Avoid aggressive driving and excessive braking. Tailgating is not only unsafe, but also reduces fuel economy.

Accelerate slowly and achieve the highest gear as soon as possible in a manual vehicle. Travelling at fast speed in low gears can use more than 45% of fuel than is needed. Don’t depress the accelerator more than 1/4 of the total foot travel.

Travelling at 90 km/h gives you up to 21% better mileage compared to 110 km/h. Hence, keep to the legal speed limit - the faster you drive, the more fuel is consumed.

Keep your speed constant at 60-65 km/h and avoid “stop start” driving if possible. Slowing down or speeding up wastes fuel.

A sequence of traffic lights are usually programmed to be “green” when you pass through them, if travelling at the legal speed limit (e.g. 60 km/h), reducing your chances of having to stop.
