During last year, other new intercontinental routes have been launched from FCO by Alitalia to Beijing and Rio de Janeiro and by China Eastern Airlines to Shanghai. When Berlin Brandenburg Airport opens on 17 March 2013, all air traffic in Germanys capital region will be concentrated in the south-east of Berlin. The new airport will be designated the IATA code BER the three trademark letters of the new airport. As of 2013, BER will secure the air traffic infrastructure for the Berlin-Brandenburg region and thus replace the existing airport system. More than 24 million passengers travelled through the existing facilities in 2011.
