During the years in which William T. Orr was an executive

actors in a s t r ing of highly successful te levis ion ser ies and feature f

Recently Orr turned to independent motion picture production
and formed United National Pictures with direc tor Richard L. Bare.
For t he i r current projec t for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, "Wicked,
Wicked," Orr and Bare conducted a t a l en t search of w"ide proport ions,
interviewing hundreds of hopefuls for a par t i cu la r ro le .
"We knew exact ly what we wanted in the role of the ki l l e r , "
says Orr, who i s executive producer of the fi lm. "We needed intensi ty
and passion as well as innocence , a combination of qua l i t i e s we
found to be rare among the many , many young actors we interviewed. "
The search ended wi th the s igning of Randolph Roberts.
An intense and ser ious young m a ~ by nature, Randolph , a student at
the School of Performing Ar ts i n San Diego , wil l now make his film
debut in "Wicked . Wicked."
Bi l l Orr i s exci ted about h is l a t e s t "f ind."

Director Bare i s equally impressed. "There are many

LEisURE •ARTS, E N T E R T A I N M ~ N T
& RECREATION
Cinema: 'Wicked, Wicked' is so-soWicked, Wicked introduces "Duo-Vision," a
refinement of the split-screen technique in
filming and a method tha t can be interesting, butal\ ·too ortcn becoming confu s ing and overused.
Developed by wr.iter-producer-director
Richard L. Bare. Duo-Vision involves du alscrecns, each showing filmed action, with onescreen giving active roles and the ather a passiverole.
For example : a woman is getting ready forbed as a killer approaches. One screen shows her
undressing while the ather screen follows the .killer as he approaches her room. Or someonetells a story on one screen while the other scree n.shows what he is really thinking and what r eally·happened.
In these uses, Duo-Vision works very well atbuilding suspense and in giving backgroundinformation that m ight otherwise take too much '·time. /lut in constant use, as it is in this film, themethod becomes boring.
Despite its overuse, the Duo-Vision is the bestpar t of Wicked, Wicked. The script by Bare istrite nnd so filled with typical scr een stereotypes.and cliches that it is almost comical. Hisdirection is erratic and sloppy and acting by theprincipals is appalling. .
'The film is set at the historic Hotel del-<
Coronado in San Diego, although the name in this. movie is the Holel Grand in Los Angeles. Several
blondes who have checked into the hotel have
disappeared, causing the hotel's squeamish'manager (Roger Bowen) to think they have
skipped. House detective Rick Stewart (DavidBaH ey) suspects foul-play. .
At · the beginning, the viewer watches asshapeiy blonde Delores Hamilton (DianeMcBain) is stabbed and dismembered by anintruder.wearing' a phantom-of·theo()pera mask .Stewart investigates and Hnds his job complicated by the hotel's latest guest, singer Lisa'James (Tiffany Bolling), his ex-wife and a futu re '
.target of tpe mad killer.
Stewart' s investigation reveal many hieoussecrets about the kiUer who stalks the hotel insearch of b!ondes and only blondes (which, ofcourse, is another secret).
A supporting cast of fine character actors- .Arthur O'Connell, Madeleine Sherwood andRandolph Roberts-a re wasted in this
melodrama. Each killing is backed by theoriginal musical score from the 1925 silent film"Phantom oC the Opera" and one screen switches, from time to time, to a mysterious womenorganist whose presence is neither explained 01'
necessary.
The film builds tn the necessary climax and is

THE MARQUEEBy Barbara Biaden .
Hollywood . always On the lookout for new gimmicks whengood writing and acting would suffice to brine the public intomovie houses , has taken a mediocre melodrama horror storyand Cllt i t up for double screen image with " Wicked , Wicked,"
currently playing on the Peninsula. .It. works to keep your mind off the mindlessness of the

TWO SEPARATE ACTION sequences are shown on the screen at the same time
through a unique motion picture projection process called Duo-Vision and intro-duced in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's mystery, "Wicked, Wicked," The innovatiscreen process was two years in development.
Innovative Process Utilized In 'Wicked, Wicked'
Duo-Vision Bringing New Image To Movies
TIFFANY BOLLING and David Bailey playa divorced cou ··pie whose love is rekindled amid a murder and Intrigue' in thenew film, "Wicked, Wicked."
An innovative screen p r o c e ~ . two years in development. has
. been perfected and utilized for thefirst time in the United Nationalpicture. "Wicked. Wicked." forMetro-Goldwyn-Mayer release
starring David Bailey. Tiffany Bolling and Madeleine Sherwood.
The radical technique. namedt i u o ~ V i s i o n and created by thefilm's wr-iter-director-producerRichard L. Bare, involves the useof dual screens in an overall aspect
ratio of 2.65 to 1 with two contemporaneous frames projected sideby side from a single 35mm film.
No modification of projectionequipment i ~ necessary and anytheater equipped with anamorphiclenses and a wide screen can exhibit films produced in Duo-Vision.
Although split screen sequencesand multiple images have beenseen in the . past, this is the firsttime that an entire screenplay hasbeen d(lsigned for parallel images.
Used primarily for the depiction. of simultaneous parallel action, theprocess len$ itself to the 'delineation of cause and effect, the truthand the untruth, ' flashbacks in
time, v'isions of the future - without the abrupt interruption of thestory's main continuity. .
The audience is allowed to viewsimultaneously the protagonist andthe antagonist, the chaser and the
chased, no matter what physical• .. ,. I "
distance lies between them.Dual images can portray the
vital elements of the drama
exactly as they are happening andas they relate to one another. Theycan, with caustic candor, show asituation the way a character believes i t to be and the way it reallyis .
In the natural limitations of timeand space 'are hurdled effectively
. and dynamically. .
"This new dual screen form is amind-blower." says creator Bare."You can say' goodbye to the' oldcliche 'Meanwhile. back at theranch .. •
Bare goes on to point out thatonly in a film {or perhaps tlie theater) can a storyteller offer with anysemblance of order -bilateral action. A novelist would create an'unnecessary burden .on the readerwere he to attempt to .depict actionand events occurring simultane- ' .ously. He can only do so sequentially.
. "I picked 'Wicked. Wicked' for
the introduction for two reasons."says Bare. "I t is a suspense dramaof the psycho-killer genre and the 'entife action is laid in an ancientseaside resort hotel. Naturally. Ipicked the Hotel Del Coronado inSan Diego for our locations. Theplot and the setting combinedbeautifully to make our dual
screens work."When asked if the two pictur
side by side would ' tend to be cofusing, Bare had this to say : "Ykidding? Today's audiences amade up of kids who have bebrought up on doing their homwork in front of the ~ e l e v i s i o n set
Actually, the technique as it hbeen applied to "Wicked, Wickeinvolves an active screen and
. passive screen - dialogue froonly one screen at a time whsilent footage unreels on the othscreen, but . always _ scen
that bear a relationship to oanother. For instance; as Ric(David Bailey) searches for Json's (Randy Hoberts) secret hidaway on the left-screen, the audence sees him on the right screesitting. immobile in his a t tsharpening a lethal looking knif

.danger.
The 'dynamics .of the drama a
intensified as the audience bcomes omnipotent in its comprhension of the t h r e e - p h a ~ e d actioFlashbacks in the old sense ajust that: old, since the forwamainstream of the story remaiunhindered.

Since those mOVies, howev- and there to make two paralleler, the device has practically scripts.dropped from sight, except for "Twentieth Century-Foxmovie credits and television turned it down because theysports shows.
What makes Bare's duo-vi-sion unique is that the screenis split down the middle foralmost the entire length of themovie. It's like watching twoseparate films, although bothcover the same story.
It's more confusing to describe than it is to watCh, forBare has been careful to uselIlalogut On only one side orthe screen at a time. The otherside, wllet.er en the left or theright, gives another view or
the story, or a flashback orflash-forward.
The first duo-vision feature,HWicked, Wicked," is one ofthose killer on the loose melodramas. It gives Bare ampleopportunity to show the murderer creeping up on one Sideof the screen whUe the unsuspecting victim undresses forbed on the other side.
Scheduled to open in theEastbay within a few weeks,"WICked, Wicked" stars whatMGM calls "a blend of newcomers and familiar faces,"includmg Tiffany Bolling, Randolph Roberts. Ed; "Kookie"Byrnes, Diane McBain, ScottBrady and David Bailey.

thought it would be too confusing_ But I rationalized it thisway - kids today have grownup doing their homework whilewatching TV, why couldn'tthey foliow the action on twoscreens?"It took Bare only 48 hours to
sell the idea to MGM, alwayson the lookout for an exploitable product. Then the 1V0rkbegan.
"My first preblem was IInding a typewriter with a carriage wide enough 10. lake alegal-site piece of paper sideways, so I could type paraUelseripts, I Bare said. "Then. Ihad to find a duplicating machine Ihat would do the same
thing."The major production prob

Without the double-screedevice, "Wicked. WIckedmight be just another bloodmurder story with run-of-themill stabbings. and decapltatior.s in a spooky old r12sorhotel setting. But Bare believe8 he's given it a touch ohumor.
