TIGER CONSERVATION

Wild tiger numbers are at an all-time low. We have lost 97% of wild tigers in just over a century. Tigers may be one of the most revered animals, but they are also vulnerable to extinction. As few as 3200 exist in the wild today.

Easily recognised by its coat of reddish-orange with dark stripes, the tiger is the largest wild cat in the world.

The powerful predator usually hunts alone. Tigers wait until dark to hunt. Once a tiger has spotted its prey, it sneaks as close as possible to its victim. Then the tiger sprints to the unsuspecting animal, usually pulling it off its feet with its teeth and claws.

Unlike most members of the cat family, tigers seem to enjoy water. They swim well and often soak in streams or pools of water to cool off.

Some tigers live where it gets very cold — in parts of North Korea, eastern Russia, and China. Other tigers live where the climate is generally warmer — in India and parts of southeast Asia.

HABITAT LOSS

Tigers have lost 93% of their natural habitat. It has been destroyed by human activities, including the clearing of forests for agriculture and timber trade. Forests are also cleared for development activities such as the building of road networks.

HUMAN WILDLIFE CONFLICT

People and tigers increasingly compete for space. The conflict threatens the world’s remaining wild tigers and poses a major problem for communities living in or near tiger forests. As forests shrink and prey gets scarce, tigers are forced to hunt domestic livestock, which many local communities depend on for their livelihood. In retaliation, tigers are killed or captured.

CLIMATE CHANGE

One of the world’s largest tiger populations is found in the Sundarbans — a large mangrove forest area shared by India and Bangladesh on the northern coast of the Indian Ocean. The Bengal tigers are found here. However, rising sea levels caused by climate change threaten to wipe out these forests and the last remaining habitat of this tiger population.
