Introduction
Students who decide to study in Italy oten fnd themselves thrown
into a system and a culture which are very dierent rom those o their
own countries; they must also deal with unamiliar and, at times, com-
plex bureaucratic procedures.
It was or this reason that the Welcome Desk was created, a University
service or students, doctoral students and interns who have come
to Milan or the frst time. The service is also dedicated to those who
already live in the city and need to veriy the validity o academic qua-
lifcations obtained abroad in order to enrol on one o our courses.
The Welcome Desk is the point o reerence or all the initial necessities
o your new adventure in Milan and at the University. This short guide
will outline the various steps you need to take in order to:
obtain the documents necessary or living in Italy
take an Italian language course
take advantage o the services and opportunities oered by the Uni-
versity
enrol on a course
live and get around in the city o Milan.

addresses on the website www.salute.gov.it > Servizio Sanitario
Nazionale) remembering to take with you:

Please noteThe TEAM/EHIC (European Health Insurance) card should be
requested rom the local health authority o your home country prior
to departure. In any event, old orms such as the E111 or E128 will still
be considered valid.
To take out a policy with INA-Assitalia you must:
go to a post oice and use a payment slip to make a payment o
98,00 (cost o the service or one year) to post ofce current account
n.71270003, registered to: Agenzia Generale di Roma INA Assitalia,
speciying the ollowing reason or payment: polizza sanitaria studentistranieri da 6 a 12 mesi.
To live in Italy, both European and non-European students are required
to obtain certain ofcial documents in order to ormalize their right o
residence.
To acilitate the procedure, we have arranged the necessary inorma-
tion in a specifc order, which we suggest you ollow step by step: in
act, there are certain documents that you must hold beore you can
apply or others.
Health insurance
It is extremely important to have valid health insurance, as it is also requi-
red in order to apply or a residence permit within 8 days o your arrival
in the country.
Perhaps you already have health insurance, which was taken out in
your home country and validated by the diplomatic representation
prior to your departure. I not, the two saest options are:
voluntary registration with the Italian national health service (Servi-zio Sanitario Nazionale or SSN), which gives you the opportunity
to choose a doctor (general practitioner), who will deal with health
problems ree o charge, and prescribe medicines, tests and speciali-
st examinations when necessary.
the INA-Assitalia policy, which only covers emergency health carein public hospitals.
To register with the SSN you must:
1. go to a post ofce and use a payment slip to make a payment o
149,77 (cost o the service or one year) to post ofce current
account n.379222, registered to: Amministrazione P.T. Regione
Lombardia, speciying the ollowing reason or payment: iscrizione
volontaria al SSN;

Renewal
In order to renew your residence permit you must fll in the application
kit, specifying that it is a renewal. The kit is available rom any post
ofce displaying the "Sportello amico" logo, to which it must then be
returned along with the ollowing documents:
1. a photocopy o your passport (only the pages with your personal
details and the visa stamp)
2. a copy o your residence permit
3. a copy o the documentation which attests to the availability oadequate fnancial resources (approximately 5,400), or example,
proo that you hold a scholarship or details o your current account
4. your university record book with proo that you have passed 1
examination, in the case o the frst renewal, and 2 examinations
or every subsequent renewal
5. your health insurance.
Please noteIt is advisable to begin the renewal procedure 60 days before the
expiry date.
Costs
14,62 or 1 revenue stamp (available rom any tobacconists shop),
which is to be applied to your residence permit application
30 to be paid at the post ofce when the kit is sent
27,50 to be paid at the post ofce or issue o an electronicresidence permit.
Residence permit
First application
I you are an EU citizen, you do not require a residence permit as such,but you must register with your local civil records ofce.
I you live in Milan you can book an appointment on the website www.
comune.milano.it > Servizi online > Servizi Anagrafci > Residenza
stranieri.
On the day o the appointment, you must take the following to thecivil records ofce:
1. your passport or identity card
2. the certifcate o enrolment issued by our Students Secretariat
3. a photocopy o the documentation which attests to the availability
o adequate fnancial resources (approximately 5,400), or exam-
ple, proo that you hold a scholarship or details o your current
account
4. health insurance.
I you are a non-EU citizen you must fll in and submit the residence
permit application kit. You can ask or the kit at the Welcome Desk,
where someone will also be on hand to help you fll it in. It must then
be submitted to a post ofce displaying the Sportello amico logo,
along with:
1. a photocopy o your passport (only the pages with your personal
details and the visa stamp)
2. our passport-size photographs
3. certifcation o the chosen course o study speciying the duration
and the stamp o the Italian diplomatic representation which issued

Students
Italian language exam and aptitude tests
I you have just arrived rom a non-EU country, you must take theItalian exam (unless you are exempt rom doing so, perhaps because
you hold the CELI 3 certifcate level B2) and, in some cases, also an
aptitude test, beore enrolling on your chosen course.
The exam venues and results are shown on the International
Students notice board in the Students Secretariat.
Submission o embassy documentation
I you have a qualification which was obtained abroad, the
documents issued by the embassy relative to your secondary school
diploma or degree must be presented at the International Students
Ofce.
Admission tests or courses with limited places
I you have chosen a course with a limited number of places, you
must pass the admission test, beore matriculation.
In order to take the test you must:
pick up the payment orm rom the International Students Ofce and
pay the test ee at your bank
hand in the payment receipt and pick up the details regarding the testdate and venue (the dates can also be ound on the page www.unimi.it/studenti/immconcl/2363.htm)
check the test results on the notice board in the Students Secretariat.
Please note Non-EU students resident abroad are added to confdential lists.
Students who are already resident in Italy and have a taxpayers code
can apply to take the admission test through SIFA, (www.unimi.it/hpsia/
nonProfledPage_100.html), where they can also check the results.
Matriculation
I you have chosen a course with a limited number of places and
passed the necessary tests, you can matriculate (enrol or the frst time)
by the established deadline.
In order to do so, you must:
go to the International Students Ofce and pick up a matriculation
orm and a bank orm, which is required to pay the frst instalment
o your ees ( 688).
make the payment at a bank
submit the ollowing to the International Students' Ofce:1. the completed orm
2. the payment receipt
3. a passport-size photo
4. a translated and authenticated copy o your diploma
5. a copy o the declaration o value
6. a copy o your passport (only the pages with your personal
details and the entry visa stamp).
Please noteStudents who are already resident in Italy and have a taxpayers code
must matriculate through SIFA (www.unimi.it/hpSIFA/nonProfledPa-
ge_100.html).

Erasmus incoming
I you have arrived at the university as part o the Erasmus Programme,
you must submit the ollowing in person at the International
Agreements and Relations Ofce:
1. your passport or other identity document
2. two passport-size photos
3. the certifcate or Erasmus students issued by your own university
4. your accident insurance certifcate (which is valid abroad)
5. your TEAM/EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) or medicalassistance.
The ofce will help you to:
make an appointment with your academic tutor in order to discuss
details o the study plan (Learning Agreement)
obtain inormation regarding health care and travel cards
access the services oered by the University (e-mail address, wi-f,
library access, accommodation, reectories, Italian courses, services
or disabled students), and provide inormation about cultural and
social activities and student associations
receive the ree card or the Centro Universitario Sportivo (University
Sports Centre).
Please noteOn request, the University oers accommodation or Erasmus studentsin the university halls o residence (at a cost o 300 per month, with
use o the relative reectory services, at a cost o 3 per meal) and60-hour language courses or all levels.

Doctoral students
Matriculation
To enrol on a doctoral course, you must submit the ollowing to theInternational Students Ofce:

Fees
I you have been awarded a place without a scholarship, you must pay
an enrolment ee o 925 or the frst year at the time o matriculation.
The ee includes accident and civil liability insurance, which is valid
or all the structures in which you will carry out authorized study andresearch activities.

Scholarships
I you have been awarded a place on a doctorate course with a
scholarship you must contact the Training and Research Contracts Ofce
([email protected]) in order to begin the payment procedures.
The scholarship is paid into your current account every two months.
The payslips with details o each individual payment can be consulted
at www.unimi.it/ricerca/30838.htm.
Educational and research activities supervisor
The supervisors o doctorate course activities are the course coordinators
indicated in the competitive examination annou ncements. It is
advisable to contact your supervisor as soon as possible in order to
schedule these activities.

An entire section o this guide is dedicated to on-line services, which
are basically the same or everyone, barring the ew exceptions
outlined below:
E-mail and log-in credentialsDoctoral students are also assigned an e-mail box with the same
characteristics and levels o protection as those assigned to other
students (see the University on-line section). However, in this case, the

The address is automatically generated once the matriculation
procedure has been completed. From October, thepasswordcan then
be set by visiting https://auth.unimi.it/credenziali/.
Your user name (e-mail address) and password are your log-in
credentials or accessing all the Universitys on-line services: rom SIFA
services (see below) to the Institutional Research Archive (AIR).
University portalInormation dedicated to doctoral students can be accessed via the
COURSES section (in the horizontal menu above the photos) > Third
Cycle > Doctorates.
SIFA serviceDoctoral students can take advantage o the SIFA on-line service or:
checking and changing their personal data
printing certifcates
They must use the SIFA on-line service to:

Scholarships
There are various types o scholarships, some o which are aimed
specifcally at oreign students.
Scholarships offered by the Italian government
Intended or non-EU students, these scholarships are oered by
the Italian Ministry o Foreign Aairs. To fnd out how to obtain a
scholarship, you can contact the Italian diplomatic representation or
consult the Ministry's website at www.esteri.it/MAE/IT ollowing the

Scholarships offered by the University and the C.I.Di.S.
Allocated each year to students on dierent years o courses, thescholarships are awarded according to merit and income, as shown by
ISEE/ISEEU certifcation.
The scholarships are managed and allocated by the C.I.Di.S., and a part
o those provided by the University are specifcally reserved for non-
EU students. In order to apply, you must contact the C.I.Di.S. by 30
September 2011.

Scholarships for disabled students
Every year, the University awards scholarships, by means o a

E-mail and log-in credentials
All students are assigned an email box with a capacity o 150 MB.
The box can be accessed with the log-in credentials received upon
completion o matriculation.
Consisting o a user name and apassword, your log-in credentials are
also required to use the SIFA services, the digital library, the services
o the CTU (the Universitys multimedia and e-learning centre) and to
access the AIR, the Research Archive.
Your user name, which is also your e-mail address, is generatedautomatically and structured as ollows: name.surname@studenti.
unimi.it.
The e-mail box may be consulted and used directly via the portal www.
unimi.it, by selecting Webmail studenti in the Accesso rapido
column on the right.
You can change your passwordand resolve any problems by visiting
the page www.unimi.it/studenti/posta_elettronica.htm.
Please noteYour University e-mail address is the sole channel for official
communications .
Thereore, it is essential that you regularly check and empty your e-mail
box in order to avoid exceeding your quota.
The University portal
www.unimi.it/ENG is the address o our Universitys international
portal. Its pages contain all the inormation you will need. Like every
website, the portal is constantly changing, but there are several fxed
paths to help you fnd your way. The ones that regard you most
directly are the COURSES and STUDENT SERVICES sections (both in
the horizontal menu above the photos) and the Segreterie Studenti
(Students Secretariat) banner on our Italian website (www.unimi.it).
In the COURSES section you will fnd all the inormation you need
about the various aculties, with links to the website or each degree
course and the on-line courses.
The STUDENT SERVICES section, on the other hand, oers inormation
which is designed to help students deal with all other aspects o
university lie.
Every month, the Segreterie studenti section on our Italian website
(www.unimi.it) highlights the most requently requested inormation,
regarding such things as general orms, payment orms, regulations,
ees, deadlines, etc.

Inomail Segreterie
Inomail Segreterie is an inormation service provided by the Students
Secretariat, which can be accessed via the portal www.unimi.it >
Segreterie studenti.
Ater logging-in with your e-mail credentials, you can fll in the on-line
orm: choose the category o inormation that interests you and send
your query to the Secretariat. You will receive a prompt reply.
Unimia
Unimia is your customisable home page, which gives you access
to all the most important inormation concerning study (examination
enrolment, lesson programmes and times), administration
(administrative position, ees, benefts) and your university career
(academic position, electronic record book, average examinationmark). The page also allows you to use the study, secretariat (SIFA),
guidance, internships and job search services (COSP).
With Unimia, you can create your own personal lesson calendar, keep
an eye on the syllabi that interest you, obtain inormation about the
teaching sta and organise a directory o the most useul university
websites.
How to access the pageUnimia can be accessed at unimia.unimi.it or rom the homepage o
the portal www.unimi.it, ollowing the path > Servizi online Sia and
logging-in with your user name and password.
Please noteAt the moment, Unimia is only available or the aculties o Pharmacy,
Law, Exercise and Sports Sciences and Veterinary Medicine. The servicewill be activated during the course o the year or all other aculties.
SIFA service
The on-line SIFA (Integrated Faculty Services) environment has been
created in order to simpliy administrative procedures and cut down
on queues at desks. The service allows you to:
check your personal data and administrative position
print certifcates
enrol or examinations, courses and workshops
draw up a study plan
apply or exemption rom payment o ees enrol or competitive examinations or the Erasmus programme and
or student collaborations
calculate the second instalment o your ees by means o a simulator.
The service can be accessed in two ways:
via Internet, using your e-mail address and password
with the sel-service terminals, using your matriculation number
and PIN.
The terminals, which are located in various University buildings
or details see www.unimi.it/studenti/1129.htm provide on-screen
inormation and can be used to print documents and certifcates.
Payment o ees: on-line payment slips
The payslips or payment o the frst and second instalments o your
university ees must be downloaded rom the portal, accessing theappropriate page via the Segreterie studenti banner and selecting

At the top right o the home page, you will fnd the Google searchengine box, which can be used or searching the portal and the other

Keep up to date with Twitter
You can keep up to date with administrative news (ees, loans, scholarships,

The Statale on Facebook
The University also has its own ofcial Facebook page, which can be

Hotspots and wi-f service
A number o hotspots are active around the University,
enabling you to access the network with a laptop or
palmtop equipped with a wireless interace.
This means that you can connect to the University network and rom
there to the Internet by using a laptop and your log-in credentials.

Accommodation and reectories
In the STUDENT SERVICES section o the University portal www.unimi.it/
ENG, you will fnd the Refectories and Accommodation subsection,
which contains a ull list o solutions or students: reectories,
restaurants oering special deals arranged by the University and the
accommodation notice boards, where you can fnd a bed, a room or
an apartment.
I your stay in the city is to be a short one, or i you need a place
to stay while looking or more permanent accommodation, you maybe interested to know that the University has an excellent guestroom
