President’s Message
Hello members,
Last Monday night we were privileged to hear a presentation on Dementia by
our very own PP Bobby Redman. The interest in this subject was great and the
numbers of questions from the floor reflected this. Bobby also revealed that she
struggled with a form of Dementia caused by dehydration as a result of becoming ill in Nepal.
Nice to see Bobby has fully recovered. How often do we have some of our best guest speakers from
with our own ranks?
The Writing Competition Presentation Night is on 12th August. This event is shaping up to be one
of our biggest nights. Bring your partners and friends along but please advise Club Service
Director Ray for room set up and catering.
The following week 19th August is the District Governor’s Visit being held at Madison’s, 632 Old Northern Road, Dural (formerly the Burning Log) which is opposite the Caltex Garage.
Wilf has advised that Margaret is recovering well from her surgery and is now back home. I believe she has a wonderful well-trained assistant and chauffeur.
Regards,
President Rob
Once more no Birthdays or Anniversaries for Club Members– what’s going on ???
BUT……we do have a Birthday celebration coming up for our Youth Exchange
Student, Laura ,on the 11th August. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LAURA.
Welcome home Margaret van Emmerik – hopefully Wilf has now got the
domestic chores off pat and you can just sit back and relax.
Welcome back Thomas Cann. Hope you
had a good trip and that all your new and
exciting plans are underway.

Apologies: Keith Stapley; Alan Jones; Thomas Cann; Ray Campbell and Alex Traill
President Rob welcomed members and special guests Robyn Mackey and Vivien Sifonios, Honorary Member
Michael Richardson and YES Laura Seif. He wished Margaret van Emmerik and Shirley Griscti well, saying that
Margaret was being discharged from Mr Wilga rehab hospital the next day and that Shirley had completed
her round of radiotherapy – he hoped that they were both be feeling better.
Rob reminded members of a range of upcoming events including:
9th August – Rotaract Charter Night at Castle Hill Country Club
10th August – Rouse Hill Trivia Night
12th August – The Hills-Kellyville Writing Competition (reminding Members that this is a night for friends and
family and urging members to let Ray Campbell know numbers for catering purposes – currently expecting
80 – 100 people)
19th August – DG’s Zone visit at Madison’s (formerly The Burning Log) at Dural) – This is an official Club night
and it is hoped that as many Members will attend, as possible.
PP Wilf who in addition to his regular role as Secretary is also Acting Treasurer noted that there had been no
incoming mail, but reminded Members semi-annual dues are now due. Wilf thanked everyone for their kind
thoughts and messages for Margaret and said that they were looking forward to her homecoming tomorrow.
PP Ray, Club Service Director, was an apology for this meeting.
PP Graeme, Community Service Director, reported that:
Dan Murphy’s had again sold out last Saturday which was good news and indicated a
positive turn-around.
The Club is manning the BBQ at the Powerhouse Museum on 17th August and passed round
a volunteer sheet, receiving an excellent response from attending members.
Planning for Christmas with Rotary is underway – save the date (Thursday 5th December)
Bollyhills 2013 being held on 16th November would be held at Our Lady of Lourdes School in
Seven Hills, this year.
PP Penny, Membership Director, reported that she had received an enquiry from a Member of another
Rotary Club looking for a Club closer to home. The enquiry would be followed through.
PP Jim, Youth Service, reminded Members that the Writing Competition (Monday 12th August) was a special
Club event and said that he looked forward to seeing a large contingency of Club Members to assist in
entertaining the many guests expected.
Jim informed Members that as Laura Seif’s Birthday coming up, he and Vivien would be holding a celebration
Birthday party to which all members were invited. It is to take place at his home from 1 to around 6pm on
Sunday 11th August.
PP, Bobby, PR and Bulletin Editor, reminded Members that in order to keep the Member’s News section in
the Bulletin interesting, she was counting on Members to provide her with snippets of information, which
they were willing to share – otherwise she would be using her Editor’s prerogative to make up as many
stories about Members as she liked – be warned!!!!!!!
There were no reports for Membership, International Service or Vocational.
The wine raffle was won by Steven Fry, but the joker was not drawn and so the jackpot, which is growing
nicely, was carried over for another week. Sergeant Brian King then did what he does best!!!!!

Guest Speaker
Our guest speaker, this week, was our own PP Bobby Redman updating
everyone’s knowledge about Dementia, with the latest research in the
area.
Bobby spoke openly, for the first time, about her own experience of
dementia following a serious bout of food poisoning picked up during her
visit to Nepal in 2011; taking the opportunity to demonstrate that certain
types of dementia are reversible.
Bobby explored why the terms Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease are used interchangeably, explaining that
Dementia is actually the over-riding term for a disease with a whole range of symptoms, with Alzheimer’s
Disease being the most common type of dementia.
Bobby then went on to discuss whether Dementia was an inevitable part of ageing, looking at some of the
things that we can all do to reduce the risk of developing the disease. She then went on to look at the 4
areas on which researchers have identified good results in their prevention studies:
1. Physical Exercise
2. Eating habits
3. Mental Stimulation
4. Stress Reduction
Bobby identified that regular exercise was clearly showing to have the most positive effects, with
recommendations of as little as 30 minutes 4 – 5 times a week making a difference in the slowing of
development of the disease. With research now indicating that Alzheimer’s Disease appears to develop for
up to 10 years before symptoms are recognisable, this slowing of progression is vital for everyone to
observe.
Good eating habits are equally important with the Mediterranean diet being shown to be one of the
healthiest for a healthy brain.
Given that both of these factors
have also been linked to a healthy
heart, there should be good levels
of motivation for all of us to think
about how we can improve these
parts of our lives.
The final two factors have also
been shown to be important with
daily gymnastics for our brains
recommended. Mental stimulation
can be as simple as reading; playing
games; doing puzzles etc – the
more variety the better, as
switching activities helps to keep
the brain flexible!!!! Whilst stress
reduction is a whole subject on its
own, but vitally important given
the link identified between high stress levels and both heart and brain disease. If anyone is interested in
finding out more, Bobby is always happy to chat with you on the subject.
