NEW DELHI, Sept 1:

Army chief Gen DalbirSingh today said the 1965 warwith Pakistan restored the "self-confidence" of the soldiers andlaid the framework for India'sspectacular win in the 1971 warwhich liberated Bangladesh.

A new book titled '1965,Turning the Tide: How IndiaWon the War', written bydefence analyst Nitin Gokhaleand commissioned by theArmy's official think-tankCentre for Land WarfareStudies, has backed Singh'sclaim.

"The fruits of 1965 were tobecome spectacularly apparentsix years later when the Indianmilitary won its most famousand decisive victory in the 1971war. Had it not been for theexperience gained in the 1965war, the Indian military wouldstill have been prisoner to adefeatist mentality imposed bythe reverse against the Chinese. That was the biggest gain fromthe 1965 war," says the book, which was released today byVice President Hamid Ansari.

Addressing a tri-serviceseminar to commemorate the1965 war with Pakistan, Gen

Singh said many unique lessonsremain relevant even after fivedecades.

He said that by 1965,Pakistan had gained technologi-cal edge over India. "However, war underscored that superiortechnology or weapons andequipment are no substitute tovalour and bravery of our sol-diers and bold leadership, human resilience and fortitude,"he added.

The Army chief further saidthat the 1965 war "settled manynegative myths" and restoredself-confidence.

"The 1965 war gave theground framework for spectacu-lar victory of 1972, six yearslater," he said.

The book, in its final analy-sis, says the 1965 war provedthat the debacle in the 1962 warhad less to do with the IndianArmy as compared to the failureon "politico- diplomatic" front. It claimed that the biggest fail-ure, however, was on the "intel-ligence front".(PTI)

MUMBAI/KOLKATA, Sept 1:

Sheena Bora's biologicalfather surfaced today for thefirst time and sought death forher mother Indrani Mukerjea, wife of former Star India CEOPeter Mukerjea, if she had mur-dered her as skeletal remainspurportedly of the 24-year-oldwere sent for forensic tests.

Kolkata-based SiddharthDas, who according to someaccounts was believed to havesneaked to Bangladesh, admit-ted he was Sheena's biologicalfather though he had never mar-ried her mother and and said"she should be hanged" if shehad committed the murder.

He said Indrani left him in1989 and they have not been intouch ever since. Das said he cameto know about the murder throughnewspapers and was ready to coop-erate in the investigation.

Sheena and her brotherMikhail, who lives in Guwahati, are Indrani's children with Das.

"I want her to be hanged, ifshe killed Sheena.... I am feelingvery heartbroken.

"I never married Indrani offi-cially. I met Indrani in college in1986. She left me in 1989. May beIndrani wasn't satisfied with mystate as I did not have a job then,"Das said in Kolkata, coming out inthe open for the first time since the

case hogged media headlines withthe arrest of Indrani a week ago.

Das also said he was readyfor a DNA test, if required, forconfirming Sheena's parentage.

On whether Indrani couldhave murdered Sheena, he said,"I believe Indrani could do this".

Meanwhile, a senior officialof Maharashtra police today saidthe inquiry into the alleged fail-ure of Raigad Police to registeran accidental death report(ADR) after a burnt corpse, pur-portedly of Sheena Bora, wasfound in 2012, would considerall facets of the lapses.

Yesterday, the metropolitancourt had extended the policecustody of all three accused -Indrani, her ex-husband SanjeevKhanna and driver Shyam Rai -till September 5.

Investigators probing the casehave said Indrani and Sanjeevallegedly placed Sheena's body onthe seat of their vehicle as they drovefrom Mumbai to Raigad to burn anddump it to destroy evidence.

Neither the Mumbai policecommissioner Rakesh Maria, who was personally involved ininterrogation since the arrests, nor the joint CommissionerDeven Bharti visited the Khar

police station today, where driv-er Rai and Sanjeev Khanna werepresent. Indrani is at Santacruzpolice station.

The inquiry into the allegedfailure of Raigad police to registeran Accidental Death Report(ADR) after a burnt corpse, pur-portedly of Sheena Bora, wasfound in 2012, would consider"all facets of the lapses by thenpolice officials", Raigad Superin-tendent of Police MohammedSuvez Haque said today.

"Pen police station got infor-mation about a burnt bodydumped at the spot on May 23,2012. Three constables visitedthe spot and conducted a spotpanchnama. A doctor was calledin to do a spot port-mortem. Thebody parts found were then sentto the JJ Hospital in Mumbai,"the IPS officer said.

"A station diary entry wasmade, but no Accidental DeathReport was lodged. The inquirywill find out why an ADR wasnot registered," Haque said.

The SP had recently said apreliminary probe found that thepolice also did not collect thereport from the JJ Hospital'sanatomy department.(PTI)
