Water, Water, Water
Where Is Water Found?
• 70% of the Earth is covered by water.
• 97% of all water is found in the oceans
• 2% of all water is found in glaciers and ice caps
• 1% is found in soil water, groundwater, lakes, ponds, rivers, atmosphere, inside plants and animals
Atmosphere- The blanket of gases that surrounds Earth.
Water vapor- Water in a gas state.
The water in the atmosphere is in a gas state.
The Atmosphere
• Most water vapor is found in the troposphere. This is where weather forms.
• More water vapor is found in the air above water than in the air above land.
Underground Water
• Soil water: water that collects in the soil. It is used by plants.
• Groundwater: water that soaks through the soil and underground rocks
The States of Water
• Water comes in three different states: solid (ice), liquid, gas (water vapor).
• A temperature change causes a change in water state.
---------------colder------------------ gas water ice------------warmer-------------------
The States of Water• Water is matter. All matter is
made of small pieces called molecules.
• The molecules in a solid do not move and are packed together tightly.
• Liquid molecules move slowly around each other.
• Gas molecules move fast around each other.

Changes in State
• Freeze- the process in which moving particles slow down, lose heat, and change from a liquid to a solid
• Melt- when water particles absorb heat energy and change from a solid to a liquid
Remember this from a few weeks ago? What state of water is found in the photos? What changed? What doesn’t it look like this anymore outside?
