    Stop-start system

    If the vehicle is at a low speed or at standstill and certain conditions arefulfilled, activate an Autostop asfollows:

    ■ Depress the clutch pedal

    ■ set the lever in neutral

    ■ release the clutch pedal

    An Autostop is indicated by the

    needle at the AUTOSTOP position ithe tachometer or by a controlindicator in the instrument cluster.

    Do not park the vehicle on aneasily ignitable surface. The hightemperature of the exhaustsystem could ignite the surface.

    ■ Always apply the parking brake.

    Apply electric parking brake bypulling switchm for approx. onesecond.

    Activate the manual parking brakewithout pushing the release button.Apply as firmly as possible on adownhill slope or uphill slope.Depress foot brake at the sametime to reduce operating force.

    ■ If the vehicle is on a level surface or uphill slope, engage first gear or setthe selector lever to position Pbefore switching off the ignition. Onan uphill slope, turn the frontwheels away from the kerb.

    The Car Pass contains securityrelated vehicle data and shouldtherefore be kept in a safe place.

    When the vehicle is taken to aworkshop, this vehicle data is neededin order to perform certain operations.

    Radio remote control

    Radio remote control

    synchronisation

    After replacing the battery, unlock thedoor with the key in the driver's door lock. The radio remote control will besynchronised when you switch on theignition.

    Fault

    If the central locking system cannotbe operated with the radio remotecontrol, the cause may be one of thefollowing:

    ■ Fault in radio remote control

    ■ Range exceeded■ Battery voltage too low

    ■ Frequent, repeated operation of theradio remote control while not inrange, which will require re-synchronisation

    Fault

    If the central locking cannot beoperated or the engine cannot bestarted, the cause may be one of thefollowing:

    Memorised settings

    Whenever the ignition is switched off,the following settings areautomatically memorised by theremote control unit or the electronickey:

    ■ Automatic climate control

    ■ Lighting

    ■ Infotainment system

    ■ Central locking system

    ■ Sport mode settings■ Comfort settings

    The saved settings are automaticallyused the next time the ignition isswitched on with the memorised keywith remote control unit 3 152 or electronic key 3 21.

    A precondition is that Personalisation

    by Driver is activated in the personalsettings of the Info-Display. This mustbe set for each remote control unit or electronic key which is used.

    Also memorised are the adjustmentsof the driver's seat and exterior mirrors, independent of the memorypositions 3 49.

    Power seat automatically moves into

    the saved position when unlockingand opening the driver's door with thememorised remote control or electronic key and Auto MemoryRecall in the Info-Display is activated.

    Central locking system

    Unlocks and locks doors, load

    compartment and fuel filler flap.A pull on an interior door handleunlocks the respective door. Pullingthe handle once more opens the door.

    Note

    In the event of an accident in whichairbags or belt pretensioners aredeployed, the vehicle isautomatically unlocked.

    Note

    A short time after unlocking with theremote control the doors are lockedautomatically if no door has beenopened.

    Locking

    Press the button on any exterior door handle.All doors, load compartment and fuelfiller flap are locked.

    The system only locks if 

    ■ it has been more than 5 secondssince unlocking, or 

    ■ twice unlocking presses have beenwithin 5 seconds, or 

    ■ any door has been opened andthen all doors are closed.

    If the driver's door is not closedproperly or the electronic key remainsin the vehicle and the ignition is notoff, locking will not be permitted and awarning tone sounds three times.

    If there have been two or moreelectronic keys in the vehicle and theignition was on once, the doors will belocked even if just one electronic keyis taken out of the vehicle.

    Unlocking and opening the tailgate

    The tailgate and the doors can beunlocked by pressing the buttonunder the tailgate moulding whenelectronic key is in range.

    Manually unlock the driver's door byturning the key in the lock. Switch onthe ignition and press the centrallocking button c to unlock all doors,load compartment and fuel filler flap.By switching on the ignition, the anti-theft locking system is deactivated.

    Manually lock the driver's door byturning the key in the lock.

    Fault in central locking system

    Manual unlocking

    Manually unlock the driver's door byturning the key in the lock. The other 

    doors can be opened by pulling theinterior handle twice. The loadcompartment and fuel filler flapcannot be opened. To deactivate theanti-theft locking system, switch onthe ignition 3 33.

    Manual locking

    Push inside locking knob of all doorsexcept driver's door. Then close the

    driver's door and lock it from theoutside with the key. The fuel filler flapand tailgate cannot be locked.

    Automatic locking

    Automatic locking after driving

    off

    This security feature can beconfigured to automatically lock alldoors, load compartment and fuelfiller flap after driving off andexceeding a certain speed.

    When at a standstill after driving, thevehicle will be unlocked automaticallyas soon as the key is removed fromthe ignition switch, or with electronickey system when the ignition is

    Passive locking

    Power tailgate

     

    Warning

    Take care when operating the

    power tailgate. Risk of injury,particularly to children.

    Keep a close watch on themovable tailgate when operating.Ensure that nothing becomestrapped during operating and noone is standing within the movingarea.

    The power tailgate is operated by:■ Radio remote control buttonx

    ■ SwitchG in the door panel of thedriver's door 

    ■ Touchpad switch and buttonG inthe tailgate.

    On vehicles with automatictransmission, the tailgate can only be

    operated when the vehicle isstationary and automatictransmission in P.

    The tail lights flash and a chimesounds when the power tailgate isoperating.

    Note

    Operating the power tailgate does

    not operate the central lockingsystem. To open the tailgate with theremote control, it is not necessary tounlock the vehicle. Unlock thevehicle first when operating with thetouchpad switch or the switch in thedriver's door. Lock the vehicle after closing.

    Operation with switches in the tailgate

    To open the tailgate, press thetouchpad switch under the tailgatemoulding until the tailgate starts tomove.

    To close, press buttonG in theopen tailgate until the tailgate starts to

    move.Stop or change direction of

    movement

    Pressing buttonx on radio remotecontrol orG on the tailgate or presson the touchpad switch whilst thetailgate is moving will stop the tailgatein the current position. Pressingbuttonx orG again will reversethe direction of movement.

    Operation modes

    The power tailgate has three modesof operation, which are controlled bythe switch in the driver's door. Tochange the mode, turn the switch:

    ■ Normal mode MAX: power tailgateopens to full height

    Adjust reduced opening height in

    intermediate mode

    1. Turn operation mode switch to3/4

    .

    2. Open power tailgate with any

    operation switch.3. Stop movement at the desired

    height by pressing any operationswitch. If required, manually movethe stopped tailgate to the desiredposition.

    4. Press and hold the button on theinside of the open tailgate for 3 seconds.

    Note

    Adjusting opening height should beprogrammed at ground level.

    A chime sound indicates the newsetting and the outer rear lights will

    flash if the tailgate is below anopening angel of 30°.

    When turning the adjuster wheel inthe driver's door to intermediate mode3/4, the power tailgate will stopopening at the newly set position.

    The tailgate can only be held open if a minimum height is exceeded(minimum opening angle from 30°).

    The opening height cannot beprogrammed below that height.

    Safety function

    If the power tailgate encounters anobstacle during opening or closing,the direction of movement willautomatically be reversed slightly.Multiple obstacles in one power cycle

    will deactivate the function. In thiscase, close or open the tailgatemanually.

    The power tailgate has pinch sensoron the side edges. If the sensorsdetect obstacles between tailgate anchassis, the tailgate will open, until iis activated again or closed manually

    The safety function is indicated by awarning chime.

    Remove all obstacles beforeresuming normal power operation.

    If the vehicle is equipped with factoryfitted towing equipment and a traileris electrically connected, the power tailgate can only be opened with thetouchpad switch or closed with butto

    G in the open tailgate. Ensure thathere are no obstacles in the movingarea.

    Caution

    Before opening the tailgate, checkoverhead obstructions, such as agarage door, to avoid damage tothe tailgate. Always check themoving area above and behind thetailgate.

    Note

    Power tailgate: If the lifters of theopen tailgate lose pressure, thetailgate falls a bit and will then bestopped by the system. Followingthe tailgate will be power openedand closed. During this the tail lightswill flash and a chime will sound.After closing, the tailgate may not beoperated until it has been serviced

    by a workshop.

    Note

    The operation of the power tailgateis disabled under low vehicle batteryconditions. In this case, the tailgatecan even not be operated manually.

    Note

    With the power tailgate disabled andall doors unlocked, the tailgate canonly be operated manually. In thisevent, manually closing the tailgaterequires significantly greater force.

    Note

    The installation of certain heavyaccessories onto the tailgate may

    affect its ability to remain open.

    Vehicle security

    Anti-theft locking system

      Warning

    Do not use the system if there arepeople in the vehicle! The doorscannot be unlocked from theinside.

    The system deadlocks all the doors.All doors must be closed and theelectronic key must not remain in the

    vehicle. Otherwise the system cannotbe activated.

    If the ignition was on, the driver's door must be opened and closed once sothat the vehicle can be secured.

    Unlocking the vehicle disables themechanical anti-theft locking system.This is not possible with the centrallocking button in the passenger 

    compartment.

    Anti-theft alarm system

    The anti-theft alarm system isoperated in conjunction with thecentral locking system.

    It monitors:

    ■ Doors, tailgate, bonnet

    Activation

    All doors must be closed and theelectronic key must not remain in thevehicle. Otherwise the system cannotbe activated.

    Switch off the monitoring of passenger compartment and vehicleinclination when animals are beingleft in the vehicle, because of highvolume ultrasonic signals or 

    movements triggering the alarm. Alsoswitch off when the vehicle is on aferry or train.

    1. Close tailgate, bonnet, windowsand sunroof.

    2. Press buttono. LED in thebuttono illuminates for amaximum of 10 minutes.

    3. Close doors.

    4. Activate the anti-theft alarmsystem.

    Deactivation

    Alarm

    When triggered, the alarm sounds viaa separate battery-backed power sounder, and the hazard warninglights flash simultaneously. The

    number and duration of alarm signalsare stipulated by legislation.

    The anti-theft alarm system can bedeactivated only by pressing thebutton c or by pressing the switch onthe door handle (electronic keysystem) or switching on the ignition.

    A triggered alarm, which has not beeninterrupted by the driver, will be

    indicated by the hazard warninglights. They will flash quickly threetimes when the vehicle is unlockednext time with the radio remotecontrol. Additionally a warningmessage is displayed in the Driver Information Centre after switching onthe ignition.

    Vehicle messages 3 119.

    If the vehicle's battery is to bedisconnected (e.g. for maintenancework), the alarm siren must bedeactivated as follows: switch the

    ignition on then off, then disconnectthe vehicle's battery within15 seconds.

    Immobiliser

    The system is part of the ignitionswitch and checks whether thevehicle is allowed to be started withthe key being used.

    The immobiliser is activatedautomatically after the key is removedfrom the ignition switch.

    If control indicatord flashes when the

    ignition is on, there is a fault in thesystem; the engine cannot be started.Switch off the ignition and repeat startattempt.

    If control indicatord continuesflashing, attempt to start the engineusing the spare key and seek theassistance of a workshop.

    Note

    The immobiliser does not lock thedoors. You should always lock thevehicle after leaving it and switch onthe anti-theft alarm system 3 22,3 33.

    Exterior mirrors

    Convex shape

    The convex exterior mirror containsan aspherical area and reduces blindspots. The shape of the mirror makesobjects appear smaller, which willaffect the ability to estimatedistances.

    Electric adjustment

    Select the relevant exterior mirror byswitching the control to left mirror (L)or right mirror (R). Then swivel thecontrol to adjust the mirror.

    In position o no mirror is selected.

    Folding mirrors

    For pedestrian safety, the exterior mirrors will swing out of their normalmounting position if they are struckwith sufficient force. Reposition themirror by applying slight pressure tothe mirror housing.

    Electric folding

    Switch control to o, then push thecontrol button c down. Both exterior mirrors will fold.

    Push the control down again - bothexterior mirrors return to their originalposition.

    If an electrically folded mirror ismanually extended, pressing downthe control will only electrically extend

    the other mirror.

    Folding mirrors with remote

    control

    This function is only available if thevehicle is equipped with electricalseat memory.

    Press button e again after locking for one second to fold in mirrors.

    Press button c again after unlockingfor one second to fold out mirrors.

    Pressing for three seconds activates

    If the mirrors were folded in using thecontrol in the driver's door, they arenot folded out by pressing button c.

    Do not attach stickers such as tollroad stickers or similar on thewindscreen in the area of the interior mirror. Otherwise the detection zone

    of the sensor and the view area of thecamera in the mirror housing could berestricted.

    Power windows

      Warning

    Take care when operating the

    power windows. Risk of injury,particularly to children.

    If there are children on the rear seats, switch on the child safetysystem for the power windows.

    Keep a close watch on thewindows when closing them.Ensure that nothing becomestrapped in them as they move.

    Operable with ignition in positionAccessory power mode or Ignition onpower mode 3 152, 3 152.

    Retained power off 3 154.

    Operate the switch for the respectivewindow by pushing to open or pullingto close.

    Pushing or pulling gently to the firstdetent: window moves up or down aslong as the switch is operated.

    Pushing or pulling firmly to the seconddetent and then releasing: windowmoves up or down automatically with

    safety function enabled. To stopmovement, operate the switch oncemore in the same direction.

    Power windows can be operated forapprox. 10 minutes after the ignitionis switched off or until the driver's doois opened.

    Safety function

    If the window glass encountersresistance above the middle of thewindow during automatic closing, it iimmediately stopped and openedagain.

    Override safety function

    In the event of closing difficulties duto frost or the like, switch on the

    ignition, then pull the switch to the firsdetent and hold. The window movesup without safety function enabled.To stop movement, release theswitch.

    Press switchr gently to the firstdetent: sunroof is closed from fullyopen or spoiler position with safetyfunction enabled as long as the switchis operated.Press switchr firmly to the seconddetent and then release: the sunroof is completely closed automaticallywith safety function enabled. To stopmovement, operate the switch oncemore.

    Sunblind

    The sunblind is power operated.

    Safety function

    If the sunroof or sunblind encountersresistance during automatic closing, itis immediately stopped and openedagain.

    Override safety function

    In the event of closing difficulties dueto frost or the like, hold switchrpressed to the second detent. The

    sunroof closes without safety functionenabled. To stop movement, releasethe switch.

    Comfort closing with the remote

    control

    The sunroof can be closed remotelyfrom outside the vehicle.

    Press and hold button e to close thesunroof.

    Release the button to stop the

    movement.

    Initialising after a power failure

    After a power failure, it may only bepossible to operate the sunroof to alimited extent. Have the systeminitialised by a workshop.

    Horizontal adjustment

    Pull bolster of head restraint forwards

    slowly. It engages in severalpositions.

    To return to its rearmost position, pullfully forwards and release.

    Head restraints on rear seats

    Height adjustment

    Pull the head restraint upwards andlet engage. To move downwards,press the catch to release and pushthe head restraint downwards.

    Active head restraints

    In the event of a rear-end impact, thefront parts of the active head

    restraints are moved slightlyforwards. Thus the head is supportedso that the risk of whiplash injury isreduced.

    Note

    Approved accessories may only beattached if the seat is not in use.

    Seat position

      Warning

    Only drive with the seat correctlyadjusted.

    ■ Sit with buttocks as far back againstthe backrest as possible. Adjust the

    distance between the seat and thepedals so that legs are slightlyangled when pressing the pedals.Slide the front passenger seat asfar back as possible.

    ■ Sit with shoulders as far backagainst the backrest as possible.Set the backrest rake so that it ispossible to easily reach thesteering wheel with arms slightlybent. Maintain contact betweenshoulders and the backrest whenturning the steering wheel. Do notangle the backrest too far back. Werecommend a maximum rake of approx. 25°.

    ■ Adjust the steering wheel 3 85.

    ■ Set seat height high enough tohave a clear field of vision on allsides and of all display instruments.There should be at least one handof clearance between head and theroof frame. Your thighs should restlightly on the seat without pressinginto it.

    ■ Adjust the head restraint 3 44.

    ■ Adjust the height of the seat belt3 54.

    ■ Adjust the thigh support so thatthere is a space approx. two fingerswide between the edge of the seatand the hollow of the knee.

    ■ Adjust the lumbar support so that it

    supports the natural shape of thespine.

    Do not sit nearer than 25 cm fromthe steering wheel, to permit safe

    airbag deployment.

      Warning

    Never adjust seats while driving asthey could move uncontrollably.

    Storing memory positions by buttons

    1 and 2

    ■ Adjust driver's seat and then adjustexterior mirrors to desiredpositions.

    ■ Press and hold button MEM andbutton

    1

     at the same time until abeep sounds.

    ■ Repeat the steps for a seconddriver using button 2.

    Recall of memory positions

    Press and hold button 1 or 2 until thestored seat and exterior mirror positions have been reached.Releasing the button during seatmovement cancels the recall.

    Storing positions by remote control

    Actual driver's seat and exterior mirror positions are automaticallystored by the radio remote control keyeach time the ignition is switched off.These stored positions areindependent of the memory positionsstored by the buttons 1 or 2, see

    above.The stored positions areautomatically recalled by unlockingand opening the driver's door with thememorised radio remote control key.If the door is already open, pressbutton c on remote control to activatethe recall.

    To stop recall movement, press one

    of the memory-, power mirror- or power seat controls.

    This function can be activated or deactivated in the Vehiclepersonalisation.
