Inthespiritofthispublication,“Outcomes,”IwantedtopresenttomyDoctorofNursingPractice(DNP)colleaguesandcuriousDNPstudentsanexampleofprojectdisseminationthatisslightlyuntraditional.First,Iwoulddisclaimthatstudentsshouldfollowtherecommendationsoftheirinstitutionregardingdisseminationrequirements.Second,IwouldremindthisaudiencethattheAmericanAssociationofCollegesofNursingWhitePaper(August2015),DNPProjects:CurrentIssuesandClarifyingRecommendations,essentiallystatesthatdisseminationcantakeonavarietyofforms.
SinceIamafacultymember,andaSpecialtyDirectorforDNPProjectsatmyuniversity,IabsolutelysupporttherecommendationthatDNPstudentsshouldpublishtheirworkasappropriateinpeer-reviewedjournals.IsupporttherecommendationforonlineDNPProjectrepositories.But,IalsobelievethatrequiringstudentstodevelopaDNPProjectwebsite,isanovelideathatdeservesconsideration.Thereareseveralfree-platformsforwebsiteconstructionatareeasytouseandofferonlinetutorials.Studentscanusethewebplatformwhenconsentingprojectparticipants,presentingtheinterventiontostakeholders,andwhendisseminatingtheirprojectHindings.
IchosetodothisformyownDNPworkinitiallyoutofnecessitytocompletemyproject.However,whatIamlearningisthatitcontinuestobeameansofongoingdissemination.Forexample,InowuseitasIteachDNPProjectPlanningandImplementationcourses.Iuseittosharewithothersmyinfographicgallery.IamalsostartingtoaddcommentarytohelpprospectiveDNPstudentsbetterunderstandhowIcameupwithmyideasandtranslatedevidencetomakethemareality.Thewebpagecontinuestoevolveasaplatformofmy“futurescholarship,”whichisexactlywhatAACNsaysDNPscholarshipshouldencompass.
Beforeattemptingthis,Iwouldofferthefollowingconsiderations.First,donotpublishaDNPProjectwebpagewithoutthesupportandpermissionofyourDNPTeamand/oruniversity.IalsocautionagainstuseofinstitutionalinformationoridentiHiersofourpracticepartnerswithoutexpresswrittenpermission.IdidnotreleasemypageuntilmyIRBapprovalswerecompleteandmyDNPChairgavepermission.Second,creatingawebpageisNOTaDNPproject.Ratheritisaplatformforthecollectionandstorageofabodyofscholarship.Third,andmostimportantly,Ipersonallywouldrecommendensuringthattheaudienceforthe

AdvancedPracticeNursesGrantedFullPracticeAuthorityinVASystem
OnDecember14,2016,theDepartmentofVeteransAffairs(VA)modiHiedtheirregulationstoallowthreetypesofadvancedpracticeregisterednurses(APRN)fullpracticeauthoritywithintheirscopeofpracticeifemployedintheVAsystem.CertiHiedNursePractitioners(CNP),ClinicalNurseSpecialists(CNS),andCertiHiedNurseMidwives(CNM)willfallunderthisnewruling.Fornow,CertiHiedRegisteredNurseAnesthetists(CRNA)willnotbeincludedintheVA’sfullpracticeauthority.
ThisrulingwillpermitCNP,CNS,andCNMtopracticetothefullextentoftheireducation,training,andcertiHication.TherulingstandardizesAPRNpracticewithoutregardtoindividualstateregulations.
Advancedpracticenursesareexpertsinavarietyofareasincludingprimarycare,geriatrics,women’shealth,adulthealth,acuteandcriticalcareandchronichealthcareconditions.APRNsperformassessments,orderandinterpretdiagnostictests,diagnose,managetreatmentplans,inHluenceandimprovesystemoutcomes.
OneoftherolesoftheVeteransHealthAdministrationistoprovidehealthcareservicestoveterans.ByallowingAPRNstopracticetothefullextentoftheireducation,training,andcertiHication,veteranswillreceiveincreasedaccesstohealthcareproviders.
Lerner(2015)notedthatin2014,morethan1.2millionveteranslackedhealthinsurance.ACNNreport(Devine,2015)claimsthat307,000veteransmayhavediedwhileawaitinghealthcareattheVA.
“TheVA'sinspectorgeneralfoundthatoutofabout800,000recordsstalledintheagency'ssystemformanaginghealthcareenrollment,thereweremorethan307,000recordsthatbelongedtoveteranswhohaddiedmonthsoryearsinthepast.Theinspectorgeneralsaidduetolimitationsinthesystem'sdata,thenumberofrecordsdidnotnecessarilyrepresentveteransactivelyseekingenrollmentinVAhealthcare.”
ByallowingAPRNstopracticetotheirfullauthority,accesstocareforveteranswillimprove.
TheVAhealthsystemrulingtoallowadvancedpracticeregisterednursestopracticetothefullextentoftheireducation,training,andcertiHication,willimproveveteransaccesstoqualitycare.
