Butterfly Graduation—Children’s Center’s five-year-olds move on
The five-year-olds in the college’s Children’s Center, most of whom are children of Skyline students,
celebrate a big transition each year when they move on to kindergarten. The former ―caterpillars‖ have
become ―butterflies‖ and the wonderful Children’s Center faculty and staff helped them make the
transition, along with showing the younger children what is ahead for them. The event was held in the
Main Theater for the first time this year, in order to allow for more family members to attend, and there
were well over 100 people there.
Automotive Technology program’s annual banquet brings students, family, faculty and staff
together
About 200 people gathered on May 17 to celebrate the completion of this year’s group of Auto Tech
students, along with student scholarships and recognition of the very critical automotive industry
partners—Toyota and Nissan. As always it was fun and inspiring and represented a model of
partnership—among the faculty and staff, the students, the industry partners and the college as a whole.
Here are Tom Broxholm, Perry Dair and Rick Escalambre with some of the students recognized at the

Puente students visit UC Santa Cruz
The Puente class took a tour of UC Santa Cruz at the end of
April to familiarize themselves with the beautiful campus,
the many programs and the vast array of student clubs and
services available to them. The Puente students got a feel for
the energized, yet laid back campus life at UCSC,
which even provided them with a vast buffet lunch in
College Eight's dining commons, where they ate amongst
the UCSC students. They also had the opportunity to meet
with a former Skyline Puentista, Daniel Tostado, who talked
to students about his experiences and was even kind enough
to show us what their accommodations looked like by
giving the group a mini-tour of his apartment on campus.
EOPS International Spring Festival showcases talents of Skyline people
On May 9, EOPS held its first ever, International Spring Festival. Over 200 people were entertained by
a variety of performances put on by EOPS students, community groups, and Skyline faculty and staff.
The acts included songs in English, Portuguese and Spanish; hip hop, Filipino, Hula and Tahitian
dances; and instrumental pieces by a flutist, and taiko drummers. With its purpose to raise funds for
EOPS scholarships, over $2,000 was raised by selling tickets for a drawing of donated prizes. The
drawing items and winners were: $20 gift certificate to La Tapatia, Lesbia Duarte; $30 gift certificate to
La Tapatia, Karen Wong; $100 cash, Denise Duarte; $100 gift certificate to Max’s Restaurants, Eli
Lanuza; and and Ipod Shuffle, Maria Rodriguez. The grand prize a Nintento Wii bundle with a value of
over $380 was won by Shotsy Faust. Much thanks to the President’ Innovation
Fund for funding the event, the donors of the prizes, and to all of the folks that
bought tickets for the drawing.
Music from Creepy Crawly Movies, Musicals and Opera
Skyline’s Solo and Ensemble Voice Class Recital occurred yesterday and
students displayed the fruits of their study this semester. Thanks to Professor
Jude Navari for his work with them and for the wonderful selection of pieces
included in the program.
Basic Skills Initiative update Skyline submitted its Basic Skills Action Plan to the state chancellor’s office
on May 1. A number of components of the Plan will be moving along over the summer, and others will
start up in the fall. Here are some examples of the activities that will be taking place during the
summer:
The Counseling Division will develop a workbook to accompany the newly revised college
orientation course, Career 410: College and Career Awareness; the course will be piloted in the
fall.
A student welcome orientation day, titled ―Let’s Get it Started: Welcome Day at Skyline‖ will
occur on August 16, the Saturday before the fall term begins.
The Outreach team will continue its work, including lining up student ambassadors for the fall.
All of the faculty and staff development components will move forward under the leadership of
Skyline’s Professional Development Coordinator, Phyllis Taylor, including planning for fall
Faculty Inquiry Groups (FIG) and Teachers Teaching Teachers (Three-T).

happen: Regina Stanback-Stroud, Jose Nuñez and
Patty Della Bona from the district office, Dino
Nomicos, Mike Fitzgerald, Jan Fosberg, Andrew
Ruiz, and Sam Goldman.
FACILITIES
Improvements to parking lot lighting begin
Richard Inokuchi, Skyline Facilities Manager, notified staff of a great improvement on campus—
Student Lot 2 recently underwent a lighting fixture retrofit. The new lamp heads that were installed are
light emitting diodes (LEDs), which are expected to provide a better quality of light, consume less
energy and last longer than Skyline’s current lighting fixture lamps. Parking Lot 2 was selected as a
‘beta test’ for the new lighting as it is dark on that side of campus and so it was the best candidate for an
increased lighting initiative and improvement. The manufacturer is in the process of making fixtures
that can be used in all the remaining parking lots, along the entire Loop Road and both entranceways to
campus.
RESEARCH AND PLANNING
