President’s Message
Ann Galt
Speaking of Workshops...We have an exciting line up of workshops this year.
Upcoming are Shelley Young and Bruce Robertson—both award winners at
the 2016 Small Works Exhibition—and Iain Stewart—national award winner
and incredible watercolor artist. CVC had David Lobenberg’s fun California
Vibe Workshop this summer and will host Robert Burridge in October.
I have been thinking about the value of workshops and the opportunity
workshops provide for UWS members. Financially, our goal is to break even on
workshops. So we try to make them an economical value to you, but to our
organization, also. Did you know that our workshops help support our
exhibitions? We try to keep entry fees under control so that you can enter our
exhibitions on a regular basis, but exhibition expenses can add up. This often
means the exhibitions need subsidies. These subsidies come from our
workshops. But more than economics, workshops invigorate. They provide
incentive and energy. They reinforce. Workshops provide new skills. Don't we
want to learn new ways to express ourselves—to make our paintings stand out
and represent our intent? New skills allow us to experiment. Workshops provide
new or alternative points of view. Or maybe the information finally just clicks.
You hear the information in a new way and enter the process with more
confidence. A specific instructor speaks to you more than others have. New
processes evolve your work. They assist you to develop your idea in a more
meaningful, expressive way. Sue Martin recently told the Sandy Guild members,
“If you want to paint differently, change your process.” Workshops are about
you. They are a gift to yourself. They offer concentrated painting time with those
of like mind. With other artists you get support, feedback, and encouragement.
You learn. And what could be better than that. Knowledge is power and practice
makes you successful in the eyes of the person that matters most...you...the
watercolor artist. So, take workshops. Enjoy the camaraderie, learn from
accomplished instructors, and make the time to paint for yourself. You are worth
it and you are probably better than you think!
-Ann

UWS Past President, Sue Martin,
presents a mini workshop exploring
the many possibilities of painting the
same subject matter repeatedly.
Variations on a Theme: Why paint
the same thing over and over?
Participants will work from their own
reference photo and create a body of
work (at least 4 paintings), using a
single reference. Students will vary
mood and meaning by changing
design elements (color, composition,
texture, value, etc.), and adding other
water media (ink, gouache, graphite,
collage, etc.). This will be a safe
place to experiment and have fun!
All mini workshops will be 9am-4pm
at SUP Building. 3301 E. 2920 S.

otherwise specified).

6 UWS Paint Spot, Sept/Oct 2016
We met on West Center Street in Logan which is famous for some of the
classic older homes in town. Each member picked out the house and the
aspect that appealed most and went about drawing and painting, as they
chose. Just before lunch, we gathered for a short critique. After lunch, another
street was chosen and the process repeated.
We appreciate Margaret’s new approach to plein air, and learning about a wider
national and international community who are organized in this effort. We also
welcome Margaret as our newest UWS-CVC member, as she joined right after
the “sketch crawl” was over.
The UWS-CVC board includes both veterans and newcomers, and we are all
looking forward to learning our new duties. We expect a great year of learning
and practicing the fascinating art of watercolor painting.

President’s Message
This summer CVC had some wonderful plein air
activities. For one of these paint-outs, it was
suggested to a member by a local artist and teacher,
Margaret Pettis, to try ‘sketch-crawl.’ Margaret invited
us to join her in a “sketch crawl.” I had never heard of
this idea, but it is apparently an international
phenomenon. You can read more about this at
