President’s Message
Is Watercolor (water media on paper) Relevant in
Today's World of Art?
Well, it’s official. You voted me in as President of the Utah
Watercolor Society. What were you thinking? Ha! I will do
my best to carry the torch, lit in 1974 by Rose Ann
Peterson; carried by many other Utah icons of watercolor
including our most recent, the fabulous Kristi Grussendorf.
Wow! What big shoes I have to fill!
So what can I do that these others have not already done? Should I do
something different? Is our Society working? If so, “why fix it if it ain't broke?"
(An old Navy saying). If it is not working, why not? What can we do better?
I guess my own pressing question is the title of this article. Is a Society
dedicated to water media on paper relevant in today's art world?
I feel watercolor societies are relevant because this media and this society
happen to be absolutely essential to my art and to me. I paint in other media,
but again and again I return to watercolor. That magical interaction between
the water, the pigment, the paper, and the artist sings to me in a way no other
creative endeavor does. And, let's face it, watercolor is just harder than the
others, right? Or am I being arrogant? Do other media artists feel the same?
Should artists organize societies around one media? Why should we "advance
the art of painting in watercolors" as we state in our bylaws? Why not just
"advance art" in general?
I really want to investigate this idea from others' perspectives. In the coming
year, I hope to delve deeper into these questions by conducting interviews with
individuals both from within and without the UWS and share with you what I will
have learned. I hope to talk with at least one of each of these Utah art world
"movers and shakers:” 1) a University art professor, 2) a gallery owner, 3) a
framer, 4) an art collector, and 5) a current UWS member who considers
another media his/her primary media. Stay tuned!
Until then, I have decided this society "ain't broke," and I will do my best to
honor those who have been the UWS Presidents before me by carrying out our
Society's planned agenda. This 2015 summer is packed with watercolor
goodness. The Arts and the Park: Light on the Reef event in Torrey, UT has
just wrapped. We have the Small Works Exhibition currently showing at the
new Bountiful Davis Art Center. Our Signature and Two-Star Members will
soon exhibit at Red Butte Gardens. This Fall, we have an exciting lineup of
speakers, paint outs, exhibitions and workshops. Stay tuned to your email
blasts and this newsletter
Colleen Reynolds
as we roll out the specifics. Thank you ALL for your
participation, contributions, and smiles. And thank
you for trusting me to lead this Society through the
next twelve months. Now let's paint…in watercolor!
Humbly Yours (for the next year),
-Colleen

Mr. Adamson has won numerous
local, state and national awards. His
major medium is oils but he has been
teaching drawing, composition, design

Prepare to be
amazed! Our
Fall Mini
Workshop will
be held
September
11th – 12th,
2015 Cannery Row, Monterey,
CA by Rob Adamson
Join Colleen Reynolds and Kristi
Grussendorf for a member social,
introduction to the new year, and a
framing demonstration.
April found us on the West Side of Salt
Lake with a sizable group, including
some oil painters. There were
railroads, cement plants, warehouses
and sunshine.
Painting out in May is always “iffy”
because of the weather. Our May 10th
Paint Out was quite rainy. Three of us
met for lunch prior to 1:00p and then
headed to Liberty Park, which was
quite wet. We did see another UWS
member driving around the circle, but
everyone else had better sense than
to come out on such a day!
We of course, finished our year in
Capital Reef, for our second Arts and
the Park: Light on the Reef annual
event. It's was a challenge for rain but
we loved it from under our umbrellas.
Please send new Paint Out location
suggestions to Maggie Harrison
([email protected]) or
Blaine Clayton
We would love paint out together in
July and August! Watch for
announcements online and via eBlast.

This year’s Western Federation of
Watercolor Societies Conference
(Western Fed 40) was held in Lubbock
Texas, May 28th – 30th, hosted by the
West Texas Watercolor Society. They
were great hosts, and I offer my
personal thanks for their work.
The delegations were treated to dinner
at the homes of some very nice folks
and, even though the Buddy Holly
museum was closed (due to flooding),
Ann DeWeese got to meet and visit
with a classmate of the rock and roll
star, so her disappointment was
subdued.
As we visited in our meetings, ideas
were shared and policies were voted
on. One change that occurred was
the required number of WFWS
exhibitions for an artist to receive
Signature status. That number was
reduced from four to three accepted
entries to bring Western Fed more in
line with other organizations around
the country.
Joyce Baron reported to the delegates
that the Archives Department at the
University of Utah will accept and keep
archives of our organizations’ shows
and events. She and Maura Naughton
have worked on archiving over the
past few years. The news was warmly
accepted by the Western Fed
delegates.

2nd Annual Arts and the Park: Light on the Reef Recap The 2nd Annual Arts and the Park: Light on the Reef plein air event, sponsored
by the Entrada Institute and Capitol Reef National Park, had 25 UWS artists
performing incredible feats of artistic creativity for three days (June 9th – 12th,
2015), despite ominous skies and rain for most of the painting days! All the
participating artists "bucked up" and pushed on through! In the end, the painters
outdid themselves with a fabulous show of approximately 50 paintings in the Plein
Air Competition and Auction. Many more paintings were also submitted for the
"Back Room" sales opportunity, new to this year's event. Thirteen paintings were
sold during the Auction and Sales event night! More sales may happen throughout
the summer, with the remaining paintings taking up residence in the Capitol Reef
National Park Visitor's Center Gift Store after-event sale. So if you're of a mind
to visit the beautiful Capitol Reef this Summer, be sure to stop by the Visitor's
Center and brag about our UWS artists! The Arts and the Park gala event was
capped off with a workshop instructed by UWS member (and last year’s 1st Place
winner), Sherry Meidell, on the grounds of the breathtaking Cougar Ridge Lodge
and Ranch, generously offered by Gary and Tami Bagley.

If you've been a member of UWS for a while,
you most certainly already know Marian
Dunn and are familiar with her award-winning
paintings. Marian is a UWS Signature
Member and has served in the past years in
almost every capacity on the UWS board.
She has given workshops, done
demonstrations, and has provided instruction
and support. Many are familiar with her
luminous watercolors and probably won't be
surprised to hear that she excels in several other mediums as well. But did you
know she's a television star, too? Marian created, wrote and hosted a PBS show
entitled, "Experiencing Art.” She has influenced many and her work can be found in
many corporate and public collections including the Springville Art Museum, the
University Of Utah Arts Museum, and many more. The 2014-2015 UWS Board has
chosen to award Marian an Honorary Membership. Thank you, Marian, from all of
us who have been personally and positively impacted by you and for representing
the medium of watercolor so well here in this community and beyond!

7 UWS Paint Spot, July/August 2015
Besides painting, summers for the Hawley household are typically spent at
cross country practice. We join the 100+ other high school students and
parents and meet at 6:00am to work towards our summer running goals.
Usually one of the students will share an inspiring quote. Last Friday, I
heard this:
“Someone once told me not to bite off more than I can chew. I said 'I'd
rather choke on greatness than nibble on mediocrity!” –Unknown
I thought about what this meant for me as a painter, and remembered how I
came to join the Watercolor Society. My good friend Kara and I had been
meeting together weekly for some time to work on our art. I studied graphic
design in college, and I enjoyed drawing, but I didn’t consider myself to be
any kind of painter. She had heard of the society, and was eager to attend,
but not alone. After much persuasion, she dragged me along. I was afraid
to try something new, but I had always wanted to be a painter. Long story
short, I got hooked. Now, after much encouragement and instruction, I'm
finally getting over my fear of ruining the paper, and I have a LARGE stack
of desirable and less than desirable paintings – not to mention the treasure
of awesome artist friends.
I have (maybe against my better judgment) shared with all of you my third
effort at painting with acrylics below. Once again, no idea what I am doing!
I have gained so much from taking a chance and being willing to try
something new. I hope we all take those chances that present themselves,
put aside our fears, and allow ourselves to stretch a little!

Plein air season in Cache Valley is finally in full swing.
I really enjoy the time spent outdoors with my friends

Often as I set down my pencil and prepare to begin

idea what I am doing” feeling. That feeling that maybe I
have bitten off more than I can chew.
