Nationalism: Identify the causes of World War I.
• The belief that a nation should express the nationalism of a single ethnic group.– Ex. Alsace-Lorraine– This belief heightened international conflicts– Left no place for ethnic minorities
• Social Darwinism: said that any nation that came out ahead in competition must be the “fittest”.
• Older European empires became destabilized.– Ex. Serbia threatened the Austria-Hungarian empire
with its independence.

• Most European nations believed that war was inevitable and began to build up their armed forces. – Germany built up the largest army and collection
of weapons– Britain built the largest navy– All nations competed to build the largest defenses
Alliances & Assassination: Identify the causes of World War I.
• To prepare for a potential conflict nations began forming alliances for mutual defense.– Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy– Triple Entente: France, Russia, Great Britain
• Assassination of Franz Ferdinand: – heir to the Austrian-Hungarian empire
assassinated by a group of young Bosnians who thought Bosnia should rightfully belong to Serbia
Alliances Cause a Chain Reaction:Describe the course and character of the war.
• Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia and is joined by Germany.

Stalemate: Describe the course and character of the war
• Both sides dug trenches and were determined to keep the high ground. This became the Western Front.
• Neither side was able to win and the war dragged on for years with huge losses on both sides.
Wilson Urges Neutrality:Explain why the United States entered the conflict on the side of
the Allies.
• President Wilson urged neutrality due to the ethnic diversity of the United States.– 1/3 of Americans were foreign born and sided
with their native countries– Most Americans supported Great Britain & France
Events that Shift American Opinion:Explain why the United States entered the conflict on

• Invasion of Belgium: the brutality with which the Germans invaded Belgium shocked many Americans.
• Three main American positions on the war:– Isolationist: we should stay out of the war.– Interventionist: we should get involved to protect
our interests.– Internationalist: we should work with all nations
to achieve peace BUT stay out of the war

• Britain Blockades Germany: – Britain uses its navy to prevent ANY goods from

• National Defense Act/Naval Construction Act:– Allowed for the building up of US defenses
• America Enters the War:– The Zimmerman Note:• Sent by Germany to Mexico and promised the return of
land to the Mexicans if they would fight with Germany against the United States.• The telegram was intercepted by the British and given
to the Americans.
