START A NEW STREAK: The Dodgers had their season-high five
game winning streak snapped in the series opener last night after
having their rally cut short in the 10-7 loss to the NL West leading
Colorado Rockies. Despite the loss, Los Angeles has won 10 of its
last 13 overall and five of its last eight games on the road. Following
the four-game weekend set in Colorado, the Dodgers will head back
to California to face the San Francisco Giants for three contests
before heading home for a season-long tying 10-game homestand
against the Marlins, Cardinals and Cubs.
The Dodgers 10-3 (.769) record since April 27 is tied for
the best record in the big leagues with St. Louis.
Los Angeles’ 98 wins at Coors Field are the most by any
visiting club, and the Dodgers’ .513 winning percentage
(98-93) also tops all National League road teams at Coors
Field, with only Los Angeles and Philadelphia (.513)
posting winning records in the history of the stadium.
Spectrum Networks today announced Spectrum SportsNet
LA and KTLA5 will simulcast the Dodgers vs. Miami
Marlins game on Sunday, May 21 after last Sunday’s game
against the Padres was rained out. The game was originally
scheduled as the tenth and final SportsNet LA broadcast to
simulcast on KTLA5 this season.
LEAVE IT TO THE ACE: The Dodgers look to regroup following
last night’s loss, as they will send ace Clayton Kershaw to the
mound for his eighth start of the season. Kershaw last pitched on
May 6 at San Diego, allowing just one run on five hits and struck out
nine in 7.1 innings to record his fifth win of the season. He currently
ranks among National League starters in wins (T-1st) and opponents’
OBP (.238), while ranking among the senior circuit in ERA (2.40,
3rd), innings pitched (48.2 IP, T-3rd), opponents’ batting average
(.210, 5th), strikeouts (53, 6th) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.57, 3rd).
Kershaw has faced the Rockies twice this season, going 1-
1 with a 4.15 ERA (6 ER/13.0 IP) and striking out 16
against only one walk. In 34 career starts against Colorado,
he has gone 19-6 with a 3.15 ERA and has held Rockies
batters to a .220 average. His 19 career wins against the Rox
are tied for the most all-time with Randy Johnson, while his
239 career strikeouts are second behind Johnson (251).
Since his big league debut in 2008, Kershaw’s 2.80 ERA
and .215 opponents’ batting average on the road is the best
among active players.
SUPER SUBS: The Dodger bats continued to stay hot off the bench
last night as Scott Van Slyke provided his fourth career pinch-hit
home run in the fifth inning, his second long ball of the year, and
Yasmani Grandal collected a pinch-hit two-run double in the
eighth. Dodger skipper Dave Roberts has the magic working this
year off the bench as the group has been one of the best pinch-hitting
teams in the big leagues, posting a .353 (24-for-68) batting average,
the second-best mark in the National League, trailing only the
Cardinals (.435). The Dodger bench leads the Major Leagues in hits
(24), at-bats (68), runs (14), RBI (15), doubles (6) and walks (9, T-
1st) while ranking in the top-5 in homers (3, T-2nd). Los Angeles
pinch-hitters have posted a .429 OBP, which ranks second in the NL,
while its .574 SLG ranks third.
Standouts off the bench include Chris Taylor (4-for-7, HR,
4 RBI), Adrián González (3-for-4), Franklin Gutierrez
(3-for-5, 2 R) and Yasmani Grandal (2-for-2, 3 RBI).
BIRTHDAY BOY: The Dodgers would like to wish left-handed
reliever Adam Liberatore a very happy 30th birthday today.
Liberatore, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list on
Wednesday with a left groin strain, has appeared in two games for
the Dodgers this season, allowing one run on 1.1 innings and limiting
batters to a .200 average (1-for-5). The southpaw is in his third
season with the Dodgers going 4-4 with a 3.79 ERA and holding the
opposition to a .224 average in 99 career games.
STRONG ‘PEN: The Dodger bullpen continued to show its strong
support by tossing 4.0 scoreless innings last night provided by Josh
Fields (1.0 IP), Chris Hatcher (2.0 IP, 3 K) and Grant Dayton (1.0
IP, 2 K). The ‘pen, which has tossed scoreless baseball in 18 of 35
games this season, currently ranks second in the National League in
ERA (2.90, 37 ER/115.0 IP), trailing only the Chicago Cubs 2.86
ERA. The ‘pen also ranks among the best in the senior circuit in
opponents’ batting average (.224, 3rd), WHIP (1.18, 3rd), strikeouts
(138, 3rd), strikeouts per nine innings (10.80, 1st), strikeout-to-walk
ratio (3.37, 1st) and fielding independent pitching (2.48, 1st). They
have also only allowed six home runs this season, posting a 0.47
home run per nine innings, which is the best mark in the NL.
Despite the career-high 10 runs (five earned) given up by
Hyun-Jin Ryu yesterday, Dodger starters currently lead the
National League with a 3.47 ERA (76 ER/197.0 IP), 1.19
WHIP and a 3.21 strikeout-to-walk ratio, while also ranking
among the best in the Senior Circuit in wins (15, T-1st),
strikeouts (202, 2nd), opponents’ batting average (.235, 3rd),
opponents’ OPS (.692, 2nd) and fielding-independent
pitching (3.87, 3rd).
Los Angeles’ pitching staff overall currently leads the big
leagues with a 3.26 ERA (113 ER/312.0 IP) while ranking
among the league leaders in strikeouts (340, 2nd),
opponents’ batting average (.231, 3rd), opponents’ OPS
(.664, 2nd) and WHIP (1.19, 2nd).
OFFENSIVE SURGE: Los Angeles has swung the bats well in the
past 12 games, posting a .304 (129-for-425)/.371/.489 slashline with
27 doubles, 16 home runs and 75 RBI. During that span, the Dodgers
lead the Majors in batting average, while ranking among the league
leaders in runs (79, 3rd), RBI (3rd), hits (4th), doubles, (27, T-4th), on-
base percentage (3rd) and OPS (.861, 3rd). Since April 28, the club
has recorded 10+ hits in eight of the 12 contests, which is tied for
second most in the big leagues, trailing only the aYankees (9).
Yasmani Grandal extended his hitting streak to a season-
high six games last night, going 11-for-23 (.478) with four
runs, three doubles, one home run and eight RBI during the
run which started on May 3.
Cody Bellinger, who finished last night going 2-for-5
with a run and a double, has hit safely in five of his last six
games, batting .346 (9-for-26) with eight runs, one double,
four home runs and 12 RBI. Since his promotion on April
25, he ranks among the NL leaders in runs (15, T-3rd),
homers (6, T-1st), RBI (17, T-3rd), SLG (.695, 9th) and
OPS (1.080, 12th)
ROCKING THE MILE HIGH: Chase Utley recorded a season-
high three hits last night, going 3-for-5 with a run, a triple and an
RBI for his second consecutive multi-hit game. Utley has seen
success in Colorado throughout his career, hitting .339 with 15
doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 46 RBI in 46 games. His
batting average at Coors field ranks fifth among active players (min.
150 AB).
Justin Turner has also seen some success at Coors Field,
batting .356 (31-for-87) with 10 doubles, two long balls
and 16 RBI. Turner, who has reached base safely in eight
of his last nine games in Colorado, has posted a .371 career
batting average against the Rockies, which ranks second
among active players (min. 150 AB).
