I would like to offer my most sincere and encouraging welcome to all freshmen, transfer and continuing Lehman
College students.
The Urban Male Leadership Program (UMLP) at Lehman College is dedicated to the progressive development and
ultimate success of all Lehman College students with an emphasis on Black and Latino males in higher education.
When students participate in this energetic program, they succeed. Students strengthen their academic skills, and
develop personally and professionally.
Students are able to strengthen their “Passport to Success” by participating in the UMLP Circle of Support men-
toring, Academic Intervention and Success counseling and workshops, leadership and personal development
workshops, as well as the annual Leadership Retreats. Those who utilize these resources offered by the UMLP are
Inducted into the program as UMLP Outreach Ambassadors at the Annual Induction and Awards Ceremony. To
start participating in this exciting initiative, please stop by the UMLP office located in the Old Gym Building,
Suite 302.
The UMLP is committed to “Bringing forth greatness…one student at a time.”

Welcome back into the 2013 Fall Semester fellow Urban Male Leaders and future leaders of tomorrow. I want to
wish everyone a very successful and enriching semester and hope that you would find promising opportunities to
open new doors for yourselves and others that will come after you. The UMLP has made me into a new and better
person and has shown me that it is best to care about everyone and not just yourself. While being part of the program
I have learned the true meaning of brotherhood and sisterhood. I hope that you will continue to form these great
bonds as I have been able to and that we can all achieve a mutual understanding of each other.

I am pleased and honored to extend my most sincere welcome to all freshmen students, transfer students, and continuing Lehman
College students.
The Urban Male Leadership Program at Lehman College is, in my opinion, the most important program at the College because it leads
to the progressive development and ultimate success of all Lehman College students with an emphasis on black and Latino males in
higher education. As a member of the UMLP Advisory Board at Lehman College, I am encouraged by the performance and dedication
of our students, so much so that I initiated the first UMLP scholarship for their participating students in Spring 2013. Three scholar-
ships were given to a deserving graduating senior, a sophomore and a junior. Students excel when they participate in this exciting
program and they succeed.

The day I was inducted into the UMLP was a very important moment in my
academic journey. Standing in solidarity with my Brothers, I know I was also
securing my son’s place as well. As a female inductee, the UMLP has helped
me tremendously in finding my voice and place in academia. The induction
ceremony brought home the reality that my son will have to endure and fight
to claim his place that I proudly held for him. I look forward to next year and
welcoming more of my Brothers and Sisters.

Hispanic Heritage Month
As we commemorate Hispanic Heritage month in 2013, we acknowledge
the richness of Hispanic culture and the contributions that Hispanic Ameri-
cans have made to the United States. Americans whose roots stretch back
to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America have
brought with them diverse cultural and artistic expressions, which enhance
the ever expanding mosaic that is the United States. While holding to their
distinct cultures, these communities have also demonstrated their apprecia-
tion of the unique and singular American spirit, which inspires endurance
in the face of obstacles and a strong work ethic to turn dreams into reality.
In many ways, Lehman College is an outstanding example of the results of
such diversity. Our students trace their heritage to more than one hundred
different nations, and work and learn together to achieve their personal
best. Initiatives like the Urban Male Leadership Program attract the bright-
est and most determined of these students to serve the campus and the com-
munity, while at the same time helping them to acquire the skills needed to
achieve academic success and their professional goals. Let us celebrate this
month by recognizing the positive impact of Hispanic culture on our nation
and by continuing to encourage curiosity about the wider world.

The Urban Male Leadership Program
It is a pleasure to bring greetings to the current students and potential students in
the Urban Male Leadership Program here at Lehman College. The development of
your leadership skills during the time you are part of this program will serve you
well in the future. The present and emerging problems that we must address as a
borough, city and nation require that you hone the skills you learn here so that you
will be able to be the change agents that we will need in the future. Step out of
your comfort zone and develop relationships with other students outside of your
department. Speak up on issues that affect not only you as a student but also that
will benefit your community. I know you will succeed. because you have taken the
first step. I am honored to be part of this exciting endeavor at Lehman College.
Akwaba! Bienvenido! Dobro pojalovat! Karibu! Emedi-o! Yohkoso! Welcome to
Lehman College! Join the Lehman College Urban Male Leadership Program (UMLP),
which is focused on developing students’ academic, social, personal and professional
skills needed for success. The Program serves “all students…without regard to race,
gender, national origin or other characteristics”. Most notably, the UMLP makes it
possible for our male students to work alongside their female peers. This practice of
gender equity and inclusion should enhance their future roles as scholars, citizens,
leaders and role models for younger generations.

Our semester is coming to a close and everything you’ve learned will
be put to the test. The UMLP would like to wish you luck on your
finals. Stay cool, as it isn't the end of your journey. This might be one
tough hurdle to jump but there are more to come in the next few years.
Happy Holidays everyone, see you next semester!

through academic skill development, study groups and success workshops. It is my hope
that you will take full advantage of these campus resources to increase your rate of
successfully completing your academic journey, leading up to your graduation from
Lehman College. I look forward to seeing you in Spring 2014 and wish you and your
family a healthy, happy holiday season. John Holloway, Dean

You have an opportunity for learning and for rising to your greatest potential. Look back, but only
briefly to see how far you have come. Remember, there will be challenges ahead.
The Urban Male Leadership program is prepared to help you meet whatever challenges you face
to facilitate your success. The faculty, administration, staff and your fellow students are available
and eager to assist you with academic and non-academic matters including, but not limited to
tutoring, advising, financial aid, career and personal counseling, health issues, as well as helping
you negotiate the administrative regulations and structure of Lehman College. We all work
together to help create a supportive and dynamic learning experience at the college.
As you take time out to enjoy the holiday season, reflect on what you have accomplished, and how
much more you can accomplish by earning your college degree. José Magdaleno, Vice President
