CourseCatalogTheUniversityofAlabamaatBirminghamSchoolofDentistry(UABSOD)isanAmericanDentalAssociationaccreditedinstitution.The4-yearcurriculumpreparesstudentsforthepracticeofgeneraldentistrywhileintroducingthevariousaspectsofspecialtycare.Thefollowingisadescriptionofthecurriculargoalsofeachterm(fall&springtermseachyear)aswellasdescriptionsofeachcourse.Thecurriculumisregularlyreviewedandcoursesandcontentchangeyearlytokeepabreastoftheever-evolvingfieldofdentistry.

Coursedescriptionsaregroupedbyyear.Thefour-digitcoursenumbersareexplanatoryusingthefollowingguidelines:1stnumberrepresentingtheyearinthecurriculum(1through4),the2ndnumberisthetermgraded(1=fall,2=spring)witha“5”indicatingayear-longclinicalcoursethatisgradedinthespring,the3rd/4thnumbersaretypicallysequential.AllHighStakesAssessmentscoursesendin“90”.

Othercourse-relatedinformationisprovided.CourseweightisincomparisontootherUABDentistrycourses,thecontacthoursisanapproximatefigure,andthegrademethodiseitherstandardletter(A,B,C,F)orpass/fail(P/F).

Anarrativeofthecurricularthemeforeachtermisalsofurnished.UABSODhaswovenmajorthemesthroughoutthe4-yearcurriculumincludingprinciplesofcommunication,ethics,evidencebasedpractice,specialpatientcare,andcoredentaldeliveryskillsaswellasothers.Thefirsttwodentalyearsfocusonpreparingthestudentforthesuperviseddeliveryofdentalcare.Majortimeisdevotedtothebasicscienceswithemphasisonintegratingthisknowledgeintoclinicalcareaswellasthepreclinicaldentistrylaboratorywherestudentsmasterthehands-oncomponentofdentalcare.Thefinaltwodentalyearsfocusonpreparingthestudentfortheindependentpracticeofdentistry.

D1FallTermTheD1fallterminitiatesthestudenttoprofessionalresponsibilitywithcoursesinsociologyandethics.Majoremphasisisonearlyclinicalexperiences,andthelearnerhasasignificantclinicalcomponentfocusingonentry-levelclinicalskillsincludingcommunication,assistingskills,medicalfindingsandinterpretation,infectioncontrol,andradiology.Thisisaccomplishedinaseriesofpatientandsmallgroup-relatedexperiences.Thefirsttermalsointroducesthefundamentalbasicscienceknowledge,includinghistology,biochemistry,immunology,microbiology,pathology,&pharmacologyasitrelatestodentalcareaswellasevidencebaseddentalcare.

Preclinicallaboratoryexperiencesfocusondentalanatomy,cariology,andoperativedentistry.

D1SpringTermTheD1springtermservestobuildontheclinicaldentalknowledgewithcontinuationofdentalcoursesinanesthesia,emergencies,andperiodontology.Theseclinical-relatedknowledgeskillscorrespondwiththebasicsciencethemesofneuroscience,anatomy,andtheinitiationofthesystemscurriculum.Thisalsomarksthestartofthecase-basedcoursesthatservetointegratethebasicscienceknowledgewiththeclinicalpracticeofdentistry.Thepreclinicallaboratorycoursescontinuefocusonthevariousaspectsofoperativedentistry.

D2FallTermTheD2falltermservestostrengthenthestudent’sclinicaldentalandbasicscienceknowledgewithcoursesindevelopment,genetics,occlusion,andthemanagementandtreatmentofmedicallycomplexpatients.Studentscontinueinthecase-basedcoursesandconcludethebasicsciencesystemscurriculum.Preclinicallaboratoryexperiencesprogresstotheareaoffixedprosthodonticsincludingtherestorationofimplants.

D2SpringTermTheD2springtermoffersstudentsexperiencesthatfocusonpreparationforsupervisedpatientcare.Coursesinpathology,pediatricdentistry,periodontology,andsurgeryhonethedevelopingclinicalskills.Case-basedexercisesfocusonthedevelopmentofappropriatepatienttreatment.Studentsspendsignificanttimeinvariousclinicsdevelopingandpracticingtheskillsneededforpatientcare.Preclinicallaboratoryfocusesonthemyriadofaspectsofremovableprosthodontics,includingtheuseofimplantsforretention,andendodontics.

D3FallTermTheD3yearhasitsmajorfocusonpatientcare.Studentsworkintreatmentteams,eachsupervisedbyageneraldentistandaprosthodontistwherethedeliveryofcomprehensivedentalcareisprovided.Rotationsincommunityclinics,emergencycare,endodontics,geriatrics,hospitaldentistry,orthodontics,pediatricdentistry,periodontology,prosthodontics,&treatmentplanning,ensureexposuretoallaspectsofdentalcareincludingadvancedproceduresandspecialpatientpopulations.Theevidence-baseddidacticcurriculumisdesignedtooffercompanioncoursestotheclinicalexperiences.
