Talent search shows are nothingnew, and the genre has experi-enced a resurgence inpopularity, thanks to Fox's ratingsjuggernaut "American Idol."
Series such as "Idol" and NBC's"The Voice" follow hopefuls as theyperform for superstar judges andmentors such as Jennifer Lopez, BlakeShelton and Christina Aguilera. SimonCowell's upcoming season of "The XFactor" will even feature controversialpop star Britney Spears on the judgingpanel.
However, while "Idol" and "Voice"certainly clean up in prime time, oneseries is offering viewers even more. InABC's "Duets," which airs Wednes-days, the stars don't just sit behind adesk and critique performances. Theyperform alongside the singers they'vehand picked to compete on the show.
Quddus hosts this truly one-of-a-kind singing competition, whichfollows the undiscovered talents intheir quest for fame. Mentors Kelly
Clarkson, John Legend, Jennifer Nettlesand Robin Thicke get in on the actionand take the stage with their musicalcharges, adding a whole new elementof excitement for both contestants andviewers. It also allows the mentors toexperience exactly what the contest-ants go through each week.
There's a lot at stake for theaspiring singers. In each episode, theytest their vocal chops against some ofthe best in the business in front of alive studio audience. After a series ofeliminations, only one singer willremain to claim a lucrative recordingcontract with Hollywood Records.
Former host of MTV's "TotalRequest Live," Quddus was a naturalchoice to host the show.
"From the moment I met Quddus, Iknew he would be the perfect host for'Duets,' " explained executiveproducer Robert Deaton. "He first andforemost loves music, and that quality, combined with his great personality, will provide a special connection toboth the artists on our show and theaudience."
But, while TV personality Quddus isa star in his own right, the superstar
singers are undeniably the show'smain draw.
Clarkson knows a thing or twoabout TV talent searches. She got herbig break on another television showwhen she won the inaugural season of"American Idol" in 2002. While manyother "American Idol" winners haven'tfared so well in the big, bad music biz,Clarkson's mix of talent and charmquickly elevated her to superstarstatus. Her debut single "A MomentLike This" broke the Beatles' record forthe biggest jump to No. 1 on theBillboard Top 100 chart when it leapedfrom No. 52. Her very first album"Thankful" (2003) debuted at No. 1 onthe American Billboard 200.
Clarkson's career has had its upsand downs in the decade since her bigTV win, but she has become one of themost successful "Idol" winners todate, with album sales topping 23million, two Grammy awards, 12Billboard Music Awards and fourAmerican Music Awards.
Country music star Nettles will alsomentor young singers and perform. Asone half of the country bandSugarland, she's well acquainted withthe dynamic of a duo. Nettles evenhad a huge duet hit in 2006 with thecountry version of Bon Jovi's "WhoSays You Can't Go Home," which roseto No. 1 on the Billboard countrycharts. She and Sugarland partnerKristian Bush made history when theyended Brooks & Dunn's nine-year runas the Academy of Country Music'sVocal Duo of the Year when they wonthe award in 2009.
Thicke, son of famed Canadian
actor and comedian Alan Thicke, maynot be instantly recognizable to manyviewers, but he's been a force in themusic industry since he was just 16.Back then, the young Thicke wrotesongs for such artists as Brandy andBrian McKnight, as well as the bandColor Me Badd. By the time he was21, he'd worked on gold and platinumalbums by Michael Jackson, Pink andChristina Aguilera.
It was no surprise to industryinsiders when Thicke's debut album "ABeautiful World" (2003) wowed critics. But it was his 2006 release "TheEvolution of Robin Thicke" thatproduced the mega-hit "Lost Without
U." His other releases include"Something Else" (2008) and, mostrecently, "Love After War" (2011).
