Both the big and smallscreens are filled withvillainous characters thatwe love to hate. TV audiences feel asmug sense of satisfaction when theploys of such iconic villains as J.R.Ewing ("Dallas") or Mr. Burns ("TheSimpsons") are foiled, while, on thebig screen, baddies like HannibalLecter ("The Silence of the Lambs")chill our blood.

Even reality TV has its share ofbad guys, with three-time "Survivor"contestant Russell Hantz beingperhaps the most iconic of them all.

But sometimes, if you just dig alittle deeper, the bad guys aren't sobad after all.

Like a modern-day Robin Hood,TV's most savvy group of outlawshas returned to its thieving, griftingand hacking ways in the fifth seasonof "Leverage," airing Sundays onTNT.

This band of merry men andwomen isn't out for gold to give tothe poor. Instead, they're out to rightthe wrongs that have been inflictedon the little guys by rich andpowerful corporations or by thegovernment. The group uses theirsets of unique skills to infiltrate,blackmail and bankrupt theirdeserving targets.

The team is led by formerinsurance investigator Nate Ford,who has found a new meaning tolife in helping out the wronged andthe downtrodden. In his previouscareer, he often ran against thetricks that grifters and thieves use intheir scams, and he's been able touse this lifetime of knowledge tostay one step ahead of the authori-ties hunting his group of outlaws.

Ford is played to perfection bythe critically acclaimed TimothyHutton. Hutton is an accomplishedactor who won both an AcademyAward and a Golden Globe for hissupporting role in "Ordinary People"(1980), and he has done extensivework behind the camera, too. Hemade his feature-film directorialdebut at the Sundance Film Festivalin 1998, receiving standing ovationsfor his film "Digging to China."

Hutton is clearly excited aboutthe new season of "Leverage," andhe spilled the beans about it in aninterview with pop culture websiteAssignmentX.com.

"For Nate, the way his father diedin the finale last year, I think it'smade him less connected to the pastand more connected to his futureand present," he explained. "Also,the theme of the fifth season is trustamong the team members and theinterpersonal relationships."

In last week's premiere episode,titled "The (Very) Big Bird Job," we

found the team of outlaws barelyhaving time to settle into their newPortland, Ore., headquarters beforethey were swept up into a new jobinvolving a tragic plane crash,courtesy of a conniving shippingexecutive (guest star Carey Elwes).In a bid to prevent another airlinetragedy, the crooks dreamt up whatmay have been their most daringcon ever -- stealing the legendarySpruce Goose.

Of course, Ford couldn't beexpected to pull off the theft of oneof the most famous aircraft in theworld all by himself. His team is aneclectic group of criminal misfitswho nonetheless manage to worktogether and use their unique sets ofskills to pull off their legendaryheists.

Sophie Devereaux (Gina Bellman)is an enigmatic and beautiful grifterwho has aspirations of being anactress. On stage or in auditions, sheis a hilariously bad performer, but inthe real world, when she's in themiddle of a con, she can transformherself into a completely differentperson and pull the wool overanyone's eyes. The romantic sparksthat have been building between herand Ford promise to heat up thisseason, but the rest of the team isreluctant to trust her too far -- theyaren't even sure if Sophie Devereauxis her real name or if it's justanother alias.

The group's hacker is AlecHardison (Aldis Hodge), a computerand technology genius. The man is a

miracle worker when it comes toplanting bugs, hacking into accountsand creating identities, but he's notyet used to the more dangerousencounters that the team can oftenfind itself in.

For those situations there's EliotSpencer (Christian Kane), the group's"hitter." The brawny man is amaster of several martial arts styles,and he can identify the make andmodel of a firearm just by hearingthe sound it makes. He has a softer

side, too, and, surprisingly, is a whizin the kitchen.

Beth Riesgraf plays Parker, theteam's resident professional thief.The tiny woman has a warped viewof the world, thanks to her troubledchildhood as an orphan, but when itcomes to doing something daring,like rappelling off of a roof, she'sutterly without fear. Audiences canlook forward to Parker and Hardisontaking their blossoming romance tothe next level this season, revealingwhat promises to be a softer side forboth characters.

'GOOD' TO BE A GUEST: JuliannaMargulies will soon celebrate an "ER"reunion on the set of her hit CBS legaldrama when Maura Tierney helps herlaunch the new season.

The network recently announcedthat Tierney has signed on for arecurring role on "The Good Wife,"which will begin with the Season 4premiere episode this September. Forher turn on "The Good Wife," she willplay a successful businesswoman whoearned millions and is now one of theleaders within the Democratic Party onthe Chicago political scene.

Since "ER" wrapped in 2009,Tierney has starred in "Rescue Me"and "The Whole Truth" and made anappearance as Mrs. California in a2011 episode of "The Office."

The series will also welcome Britishthespian Marc Warren for a recurringrole starting in the same episode. Hewill put a face to the name asKalinda's ex-husband, who still has ahold over her. Warren is best knownfor his role as Danny Blue on AMC's"Hustle." He also starred as theRepairman in Angelina Jolie's 2008action flick "Wanted" and was a partof the ensemble cast in the acclaimed2001 miniseries "Band of Brothers."

Also in the upcoming season,veteran stage and screen funnymanNathan Lane will take a serious turnwhen he begins a recurring role on theseries, too. His character will be amanager brought in to cut unneces-sary costs at the firm, which puts himin conflict with some of the staff.

The show has developed into oneof the most coveted programs in theindustry for guest roles. Michael J. Fox,Matthew Perry, Rita Wilson and

America Ferrera have already madeappearances. It's now evident thatHollywood A-listers will just keepcoming to get a piece of "The GoodWife" in the new season.

BROADWAY BOUND: "Smash"show runners are pulling out the bigguns by bringing in a big set of pipesto help boost ratings for the NBCmusical drama when it returns to theprogramming lineup.

The peacock network recentlyannounced that award-winning singerand actress Jennifer Hudson will takeon a multi-episode arc in "Smash's"sophomore season.

In a way, series regular KatharineMcPhee's professional career hasmimicked that of Hudson: both womencompeted on "American Idol," withHudson placing seventh in Season 3and McPhee finishing as the runner-upin Season 5, and then went on to findmore success than the winners.Additionally, Hudson and McPhee havebranched out to acting work in filmand television. However, Hudson'stwo-year head start and her Oscar,Golden Globe and Grammy winswould suggest that she has an edgeon McPhee.

Casting Hudson to play VeronicaMoore, a Broadway sensation whoalready has a Tony award under herbelt, seems like a natural fit, and it'llbe interesting to see how hercharacter impacts the lives of Karen(played by McPhee) and Ivy (MeganHilty).

Hudson's guest role will also serveas a reunion with Steven Spielberg,who is one of the series' executiveproducers through his DreamWorksoutfit, which co-produced 2006's"Dreamgirls."

In its debut season, "Smash"attracted some big-name guest talent,including Uma Thurman, Nick Jonasand Bernadette Peters as well as manycameos from established Broadwayfigures, so Hudson's addition willcontinue that trend.

ON THE SPIT: Comedy Central isgearing up to roast a legendarycomedian who is as quirky in real lifeas she was on her hit television show.

Roseanne Barr is next in line forthe hot seat as the cabler prepares forthe "Comedy Central Roast ofRoseanne." Filmed the week before,the special will air on Sunday, Aug. 13.

Barr is best known for havingstarred as the matriarch in the hitsitcom "Roseanne," which ran for nineseasons on ABC from 1988 to 1997

and also starred John Goodman, SaraGilbert, Michael Fishman, LecyGoranson, Sarah Chalke, JohnnyGalecki and Laurie Metcalf.

It was her success as a stand-upcomedian that landed her that series,and she has returned to those rootssince the series ended. She's dabbledin a few other TV programs since then,too, including her most recent project,"Roseanne's Nuts," about her life on anut farm in Hawaii. Currently, she isrunning as a candidate for thepresident of the United States with thecountry's Green party.

Needless to say, there is plenty ofmaterial there to poke fun at, and Barrisn't about to pass on the opportunityto get in a jab at her own expense.
