TIDBITS® THROWS IN A LINE
WHAT A CATCH!by Patricia L. Cook
Fishing is a favorite pastime of people all over the world. It also is a great way to feed your family. You’ve probably heard the proverb: “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” Let’s catch some fishy Tidbits!• Valentine’s Day 2011 was a big day for a
fisherman from Vicksburg, Mississippi, who caught a 327-pound (148 kg), 8-foot, 5.25-inch (2.6 m) alligator gar while fishing at Chotard Lake. The huge fish, believed to be between 50 and 70 years old, was donated to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science to be prepared for a future display. The alligator gar is the largest freshwater fish in America and quite terrifying with two rows of sharp teeth.
• That gar was big but not as big as the largest catfish ever caught. It was as big as a grizzly bear! The Mekong giant catfish, caught in the Mekong River in Thailand in 2005, was 9 feet long (2.7 m) and weighed 646 pounds (237 kg). It died as fishermen struggled for about an hour to capture it and became a tasty meal for the local villagers.
• How would you like to see a school bus swimming in the waters near your boat? If you painted a whale shark yellow and put in
turn the page for more!
Q: Why do fish live in salt water?A: Because pepper makes them sneeze!

Dog Tormented by AllergiesBy Sam Mazzotta
Q: My 7-year-old dog, “Cara,” itches terribly and scratches all the time. She may have allergies, but I’m not certain. I’ve tried a number of treatments, including Benadryl, steroids, special shampoos and conditioners, sprays, pills, etc. I have her groomed regularly, and during the last trip had her fur shaved off because it tangles so badly when it’s long. Nothing helps! Is there anything you could suggest?-- A Reader, via e-mail
A: I’m sorry to hear how Cara is suffering. I’m sure you’ve taken her to the vet for a complete examination to rule out other underlying causes, but I do want to mention it for my other readers’ sake.Dogs can suffer from allergies to many of the same things we humans do. Allergens like dust and dander, as well as flea bites, can cause allergic symptoms. Certain foods also can cause allergic reactions including skin reactions, itching, diarrhea and vomiting. You’ve tried several common medications to relieve allergy symptoms, without any improvement. It’s time to consult the veterinarian again. Look at Cara’s diet, including snacks and “sneaked” food that you may have caught her trying to get at. Also note her home environment, where she spends most of her time, and the objects, carpeting and plants around her. Talk with the vet about any other possible causes of her allergies.Send your question or comment to [email protected], or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. RECYCLINGDo you recycle your glass containers, plastic and paper bags, water bottles and the likes?Well if you think recycling was only for small items, think again.Chances are that old, secondary refrigerator or freezer running in your garage or basement is also running up your electric bill. That is because older, inefficient appliances can use up to 3x as much energy as newer models. But now there is an easy solution! Contact your utility provider to see if they will pick up and recycle your older working appliances for free. In most cases you will pick up a $30 Rebate in cash by recycling it. So do something good for yourself, good for the environment, and lower your energy bills as well.Commercial and industrial customers can also benefit by participating in programs that provide incentives for the installation of energy efficient products and equipments. some windows, that is about what you would see. Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the world. They can grow to more than 40 feet (12 m) in length and can weigh up to 30 tons (27 metric tons)!
• Whale sharks swim in warm ocean waters mostly near the equator. However, they have been occasionally spotted as far north as the Maritime Provinces of Eastern Canada. Whale sharks swims with their mouths open. Those mouths can be up to 5 feet (1.5 m) wide -- large enough to fit a small car inside! (Hmmm. Remember the Bible story of Jonah being swallowed by the big fish?) The world’s biggest fish actually prefers small food, mostly plankton, sardines and other small fish. Whale sharks have more than 3,000 teeth, smaller than fingernails.
• Not as big as a whale shark, but to be feared more, is the bull shark. Bull sharks are very aggressive and can be found in freshwater as well as saltwater. They have been found in the Amazon and the Mississippi Rivers. They get their name from the fact that they head-butt their prey and have tough attitudes.
• A fish that appears to have a grouchy attitude is the grouper. With its lower jar protruding in a nasty under-bite, this fish is not good looking but is very tasty. This relative of the sea bass is a healthy favorite with restaurants and home cooks.
• The largest grouper on record caught with a rod and reel was pulled out of the water in Destin, Florida, on December 22, 1985. It weighed a whopping 436 pounds (198 kg)!
• There are 162 species of grouper, with Red, Nassau and Black, being the most common in America. They have some really odd little “friends” that help them. Cleaner fish are tiny fish that swim inside a grouper’s mouth and eat the food that is trapped between the big fish’s teeth. Who needs a dentist?!
• Grouper are bottom feeders, which means they typically swim and eat at the bottom of the water. Catfish are also bottom feeders. Some are even called “mudcats.”
• The 36th Annual World Catfish Festival was held in Belzoni, Humphreys County, Mississippi, on April 2 this year. This family event celebrates the catfish farming industry

that started in the area in the 1960s. Since that time, U.S. catfish farming has grown tremendously. There are 466 million pounds (211,374 metric tons) processed annually. Of the 95,200 acres (38,526 ha) in the United States devoted to catfish farming, 64,000 acres (25,900 ha) are in Mississippi. About 95 percent of the farm-raised catfish in the United States is raised in the Southern states of Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama and Louisiana.
• Farm-raised catfish are not bottom feeders like wild catfish. They are raised in ponds of fresh water that are only 4 to 6 feet deep. The catfish are fed high protein feed pellets, made from soybean meal, corn and rice that float on top of the water. No. 1 in the South for many years, the popularity of catfish has spread across the country. With its consistent white meat and mild flavor, it is now the fifth most popular fish in America.
• Some really strange nicknames are given to another fish that is a favorite on dinner tables. “Whales,” Soakers” and “Barn Doors” are monikers for large halibut.
• Halibut the size of one caught in 2003 in the Bering Sea, west of Anchorage, Alaska, definitely deserve any of those nicknames. The giant was 8 feet, 2 inches (2.4 m) long and weighed an estimated 533 pounds (242 kg). Five people struggled to pull it in!
• Halibut has firm, flaky snow-white meat. The fillets are called “fletches.” One halibut has four fletches. The real delicacies coming from halibut though are the “cheeks.” They, obviously, come from the head.
• Halibut are from a group of mostly saltwater, bottom-dwelling fish called flatfish. When these fish hatch, their eyes are normally on each side of the head. After they grow a bit, one eye moves closer to the other, and the mouth twists until the eyes and mouth are on top. The underside of a flatfish is white, but the top may be brightly colored. Many flatfish can change colors to match their surroundings, making for good camouflage. Some other flatfish are sole, turbot and the odd-looking flounder.
• We’ve saved what has become one of the best-selling catches for last in this Tidbits. Salmon has been growing in popularity, with many health reports sending it to the top of the charts for human consumption. It is considered one of the healthiest fish to eat: high in omega-3 essential fatty acids and protein and low in calories and saturated fat.
• Salmon is not only good for your heart and overall health, studies have also shown that it is great for your skin. Dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Perricone has written several books explaining how a diet consisting of high amounts of salmon can lead to wrinkle-free skin.
• Hopefully you have “caught” the message in this Tidbits: Fish are fun to catch and great for eating!

Reducing Your Risk of Alzheimer’s DiseaseResearch recently presented at The Alzheimer’s Association International Conference indicates that Alzheimer’s disease could potentially be prevented for millions just by reducing lifestyle risks. The lifestyle risks and the percentage of Alzheimer’s they are associated with are: smoking (11 percent), obesity in midlife (7 percent), diabetes (3 percent), depression (15 percent), physical inactivity (21 percent), high blood pressure in midlife (8 percent) and low education (7 percent). That’s not to say it’s absolutely certain that these risk factors can cause Alzheimer’s, but scientists believe that about half the cases could be prevented.According to a paper by researcher Deborah Barnes, a professor at University of California San Francisco, a reduction of 25 percent across all the risk factors could prevent nearly a half-million occurrences of Alzheimer’s in
the U.S. alone. These are estimates, of course, and further research has to be done.Another paper at the same conference addressed the maintenance of cognition while aging. Cognition is the mental processes, such as problem solving, memory and learning.Seniors over the age of 65 with no impairment were given a battery of tests for cognition, stress, personality traits and depression, as well as physical tests. What scientists concluded was that scoring low on trauma, depression, stress and anxiety was related to keeping good cognitive health. They gave an example of the characteristics of coping: “developing a strategy, remaining positive, getting advice and taking action.” Researchers hope to make these tests part of a Resilience Index to assess patients for risk right in the doctor’s office. If more incentives are needed to make changes in lifestyle, this is surely one. Be more active, quit smoking and deal with high blood pressure -- and you’ll possibly avoid Alzheimer’s at the same time.Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. ARIES (March 21 - April 19) The typically tidy Ram or Ewe might want to butt out until things are settled on the home front. But get involved and let your Ovine sense of order help restore domestic tranquility.TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) The Bovine’s flair for fine-tuning complicated fiscal dealings comes in handy when an unexpected financial problem arises. Stay with it until it’s resolved to your satisfaction.GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) Family aspects remain strong. There might be some unresolved difficulties, but continued attempts to smooth things over eventually prove to be successful. A major purchase looms.CANCER (June 21 - July 22) A promise that was made but never kept suddenly re-emerges in your life. You now have to decide if you’re still interested in what it offers or if you’ve moved past it.LEO (July 23 - August 22) Romance comes to unattached Leos and Leonas who have been waiting for Cupid to target them for far too long. Domestic purr-fection is also enhanced for paired Felines.vIRGO (August 23 - September 22) You need to take a much-needed break from that demanding project before too much energy-draining tension sets in. And don’t be ashamed to ask for help.LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) Change makes demands that you might find unwelcome at this time. But instead of concentrating on the short run, look toward potential benefits down the road.SCORPIO (October - to November 21) You have a gift for reviving projects that seem beyond repair. Use that same ability to restore a relationship that seems to have turned from loving to lifeless.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21) Expect to be asked to use your combined wisdom and humor to resolve a problem. After all, folks not only value your advice, they also like how you give it.CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19) Most people consider you solid and steady. But you also can be quite capricious (which is a Latin word for “describing the behavior of Goats”) when it suits your needs.AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) People treat you as you wish to be treated. So if you want a change in your relationship, make it happen. Also expect someone to reveal some long-held secrets.PISCES (Feb. 19 - March 20) Stay with the decision you made, despite a sudden torrent of advice to the contrary from well-meaning people. Q: I have been hearing rumors that “Desperate Housewives” has been canceled. Is that
true? I hope not, as it’s my favorite show!-- Emmy R., via e-mail
A: “Desperate Housewives” has not been canceled; however,
creator Marc Cherry recently announced that this upcoming eighth season will be the showÕs last. While the news was bittersweet for everyone involved, cast and crew agree that the time has come to wrap things up on Wisteria Lane. Marc teased at ABC’s Television Critics Association party last month that this final season will return to the basics and revisit the mystery that launched the show: Mary Alice’s death. Teri Hatcher and company will return on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 9 p.m. EDT.
Q: I was so happy to read in your column that Leeza Gibbons would be returning to daily
syndicated television in “America Now.” What made her decide to return to the daily grind?-- Rita E., Omaha, Neb.
A: Leeza, 54, has never been one to rest on her laurels. In fact, she prides herself on remaining
busy, be it with her PBS weekly show “My Generation,” her work with the Home Shopping Network and Guthy-Renker on her Sheer Cover beauty-product empire, or her tireless work as an advocate for those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
Max Irons
Regarding her signing on with “America Now,” which premieres Monday, Sept. 12 (check your local listings for time), Leeza told me: “I’m so excited, because this is a real change of pace for me going back to daily television. I’m crazy about Bill Rancic (her co-host), and we’re very excited about working together on this.“I’ve already hit the ground running and started looking at some segments that I want to make my own, including interviewing leaders and newsmakers and celebrities about success and living without limits. There’s also consumer news, lifestyle
and fitness, and things for children -- we’re going to tackle all of it.”
Q: Last night I rented “Red Riding Hood” and noticed
one of the stars is Max Irons. Any relation to Jeremy Irons?-- Hillary G., via e-mail
A: Max Irons, 25, is the son of Academy Award-winning
English actor Jeremy Irons. Next up, Max is set to star as the title character in the feature film “Vivaldi,” along with Alfred Molina, Elle Fanning and Tom Wilkinson. It is due for release
in 2013.
Q: With all the talk of Amy Winehouse’s recent death, the death of football great
Bubba Smith was overlooked. Can you give me any information on him? -- Harold T. in Florida
A: Charles Aaron “Bubba” Smith passed away on Aug. 3 of apparent natural causes (as of
this writing, the final coroner’s report had not been released). The former defensive end for the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers -- who some consider even more famous for his work as Moses Hightower in the “Police Academy” films -- was 66 at the time of his passing.

Greg Biffle’s Got to Stay PositiveGreg Biffle is relieved to see things returning to normal at Roush Fenway Racing.Biffle, 41, has been
competing regularly at the Sprint Cup level for the Ford team founded by Jack Roush since 2003, winning 16 times and finishing second to Tony Stewart in the 2005 championship standings. Biffle also finished third, behind champion Jimmie Johnson and teammate Carl Edwards, in 2008.Normal, for Biffle, would involve making the Chase for a fourth straight year, but the Vancouver, Wash., native likely will have to win at least one of the final five regular-season races to do so.The reason for Biffle’s optimism is the fact that Edwards, the Cup point leader, has renewed his contract to remain at Roush Fenway. Edwards apparently seriously considered an offer from Joe Gibbs Racing before deciding to remain where he is. Like teammates Edwards, Matt Kenseth and David Ragan, Biffle has spent his entire career with Roush, winning a Truck Series championship in 2000 and the (now) Nationwide Series in 2002.“I think it’s great that he (Edwards) is coming back to our company,” Biffle said. “I was a little skeptical,
Greg Biffle has been shut out this season and will need a win in the final five races to make the Chase for the fourth straight year. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)
I suppose, whether he was going to, figuring this is August already.“I’m relieved because people won’t ask me about it anymore. That’s why I’m most relieved about it and to have him back as a teammate. He does a good job getting his car set up and helps. I think we all help each other.”Roush recently changed Biffle’s crew chief, replacing Greg Erwin with Matt Puccia. Biffle, who won the August race at Pocono Raceway in 2010, managed an eighth-place finish this time, leaving him 13th in
points.“Certainly we’ve been trying hard to win a race,” Biffle said. “We’ve come close a few times. ... Michigan, Bristol, Atlanta are all great tracks for us, and we feel like we can win at basically any of these racetracks.“I would have never guessed we’d be this far into the season without winning a race after the way we finished last year.”
