Fredrick John Fiedler, firstborn child of Fredrich C. andDoris (Parisien) Fiedler, was bornOctober 18, 1955 at Garrison, ND.He died unexpectedly Tuesday,April 2, 2013 at Centerville, SD.Fred attained the age of 57 years,five months and 16 days.

Fred received his elementaryschooling in Yankton and at-tended Yankton High School,earning his GED on December 26,2001. He worked at various jobsthroughout his life, two of whichwere the Springfield Academyand CR Industries in Springfield.Fred most recently worked forthe South Dakota Human Serv-ices Center in Yankton for sevenyears as a mental healthtechnician.

Fred loved to fish, hunt andcook. He was a pet lover and apet caregiver. Fred was a race carfan and enjoyed working in a pitcrew for several years. He alsoloved to “tinker” with the me-chanics of a car.

Fred was to be married to thelove of his life, Kathy Lutgen onApril 10, 2013.

Thankful for having sharedhis life fiance’ Kathy Lutgen ofYankton; his mother, Doris ofSpringfield; his siblings: Kevinand wife Kathy of Springfield;Karen and husband Greg Allen ofBemidji, MN; Corrine and hus-band Gary Johnson of Water-town; and Kathleen and husbandJames Haines of Volin; eightnieces and nephews; seven greatnieces and nephews; and his fu-ture in-laws: Daniel Oursland ofFullerton, CA and Kathryn Lut-gen of Escondido, CA.

Fred was preceded in deathby his father on August 13, 2010;an infant sister, Mary Theresa; abrother, Marc Karl; and a nephewVincent Frederick Varilek.

Johnson of Vermillion passedaway at WakondaHeritage Manor onTuesday, April 2,at the age of 80.

She was bornJuly 30, 1932 inCircle, Montana,and married LewisJohn Hahn (d.1966) in SiouxFalls in 1952. Loismarried KennethArthur Johnson (IBEW 426 SiouxFalls) in 1972 and lived in Wor-thing, South Dakota, until movingto Vermillion in 2010.

Following in her parent’s foot-steps, Lois, along with her imme-diate family, was a welfare fosterparent in both the States ofKansas and South Dakota for 57years, retiring in 2009. Amongher more than 200 foster chil-dren were many with specialneeds. Lois (affectionately knownby all as Grandma) also ran aday-care center in her home inWorthing for 24 years. Lois en-joyed quilting, embroidering,scrapbooking, canning, collect-ing dolls, and listening to music,especially the “three tenors.”

Lois was preceded in death byher husband of 14 years, Lewis

Hahn; her husband of 22 years,Kenneth Johnson (d. 1994); herparents, Leroy and Francis(Basche) Anderson; her sonWilliam (Bill) Leroy Banks; herbrothers Gerald A. and Orval(Beatrice) Anderson; and herniece Debbie Langford.

She is lovingly rememberedby her son, Barry (Peggy) Banks,of Vermillion; her daughter-in-law, Teresa Banks of Bradshaw,Nebraska; her granddaughterBobbie Lee (Shannon) Halverson,and her great-grandson StephanHalverson, of Cook, Minnesota;her grandson Josh Banks of Ran-dolph, Nebraska; her sister AvisBlumer of Beresford; her brotherStanley (Joanne) Anderson ofSioux Falls; her brother Arlo(Marge) Anderson of ValleySprings; nine nieces andnephews; and lifetime friendsLou and Joan Latendresse of Cen-terville and Karen Gibbs ofVermillion.

Visitation with the family willbe held at the Hansen Funeralhome on Friday, April 5, from 5-7p.m. A celebration of the lives ofboth Lois and her son, Bill Banks(d. March 20, 2013), will be heldat Cornerstone Church in Vermil-lion on Saturday, April 6, at 3p.m., with Pastor Devon Davouxofficiating. Interment will followfor both Lois and her son, Bill, atthe Worthing, SD, Cemetery.

lion, passed awaypeacefully in hersleep on April 1,2013, at DoughertyHospice House inSioux Falls, sur-rounded by herfamily.

A visitation willbe held from 5-7p.m., with a prayerservice to begin at7 p.m. and an Eastern Star serviceto follow, on Friday, April 5, 2013,at Kober Funeral Home inVermillion.

A funeral service will be heldat 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6,2013, at Trinity Lutheran Churchwith Pastor Trisha Boeseofficiating.

Burial will take place immedi-ately following the service at BluffView Cemetery in Vermillion.

Vera Rebecca Wimer was bornMarch 29, 1931, in Lawton, IA, toHarry G. and Alice C.C. (Wingert)Wimer of Sioux City.

Vera graduated from LeedsHigh School in Leeds, IA. She mar-ried the love of her life, Harland L.Emerson, on June 4, 1950. Theymade their home in Greenfield,SD, until March of 1965 when theymoved to Vermillion. Vera enjoyedyoung people and was a “Cham-pion” for the university studentswhich was evident in the occupa-tional paths she chose. Vera en-joyed her work as secretary to Dr.Charles Estee in the Chemistry

department of USD for 25 yearsand as cook for the Lambda Chifor nearly 20 years following her“retirement” from the ChemistryDepartment. Vera was very proudof “Her Boys” at the Lambda Chi& especially proud of her “Hon-orary Membership” of the frater-nity. She also enjoyed working fora number of summers for the De-partment of Tourism at the reststop in Vermillion.

Vera enjoyed the many friendsshe acquired through her employ-ment as well as the Order of theEastern Star. As a member of theOrder of the Eastern Star sheserved as Worthy Matron multipletimes, as Grand Adah, and mostrecently as Friend of a Feather forthe Most Worthy Grand Matronand International Order of Job’sDaughters, serving both as BethelGuardian and Grand BethelGuardian for the State of SD.

Ever the eternal optimist, Verafought her cancer with grace &dignity, proud to declare “It neverkept me from doing the things Iwanted to do.” She was alwayswilling to visit with cancer pa-tients to encourage them to fight.

Grateful for sharing her life areher children, Keith (Deb) Emer-son of Mesa, AZ, Alan (Dawn )Emerson of Seattle, WA, Suzanne(Mark) Willadsen of Sioux Falls,Jon (Jean-Marc) Emerson ofBoston, Becky (Mark) Socha ofLees Summit, MO; 10 grandchil-dren; 18 great-grandchildren; and1 great-great-grandson. As well asthe many, MANY friends she alsoconsidered part of her family.

The Southeast South Dakota Society of Human Resource Manage-ment Chapter (SESD SHRM) will be hosting its annual spring Confer-ence on Tuesday, April 9, at the Kolberg-Pioneer Training Centerlocated at 700 West 21st Street in Yankton.

This year, the conference will focus on diversity and how these dif-ferences can affect an organization.

The speaker for this conference will be Kostas Voutsas. With creativ-ity, humor and real life stories, Kostas reaches everyone in his audienceas he dynamically explores secrets to successful communication whendealing with generational, gender, people with disabilities and culturaldifferences in today’s workforce. Whether working with your colleaguesor customers, this keynote will have valuable information that will im-plore you to break the barriers and prevent unnecessary biases, con-flict, stereotyping and misunderstandings.

This conference is relevant for all companies. It is open to the pub-lic and is a valuable training opportunity for managers, supervisors,and business owners.

The SESD SHRM chapter is an affiliate of the Society for Human Re-source Management.

Marlene was born May 30,1937 in rural Freeman, SD toWilliam and Magdalena (Met-

tler) Mehlhaf. Shewas baptized andconfirmed at ZionReformed Churchin rural Menno,SD and was a life-time memberthere. She livedon the familyfarm until she en-tered the Free-

man Salem Home in 2003 andthen entered the nursing homein Freeman, SD. She loved catsand singing in the choir. She al-ways wanted to go to churchand was disappointed when shecould not attend anymore.

She is survived by herbrother, Wilmer (Gladys)Mehlhaf of Freeman, SD; sister,Vernetta (Donald) Schulz ofParkston, SD; brother-in-law,Alton Schelske of Parkston, SD;

sister-in-law, Twyla Mehlhaf ofFreeman, SD, two nieces andfour nephews.

Larry was born December29, 1940 in Bow Valley, NE toAnton J. and Eleanor E. (Kathol)Noecker. He was confirmed Oc-tober 16, 1950, graduated fromHoly Trinity in 1958, and at-tended one year at University ofSouth Dakota in 1959. He mar-ried his first wife, Janet Cline in1961; they had five children,Todd, Julie, David, Carmen andBrian, and resided in Harting-ton, NE. Larry worked as an

electrician for An-derson Electricfor many years.He later moved toCrofton, NE andthen settled inYankton, SDwhere he marriedCarol Boom in1997. He contin-ued to work as an

electrician for Kolberg’s. Heloved the outdoors and enjoyed15 years racing stock cars inHartington, South Sioux City,Creighton and the surroundingareas often winning or comingin close second. He enjoyedhelping his kids in their homesby passing on the knowledge ofhis trade. In later years, headopted Cole and Sasha, hisbest buddies (his two puppies)who always put a smile on hisface. Larry always greetedeveryone with a welcomingsmile and contagious laugh. Hissense of humor and charm willbe missed by many.

He is survived by his wife,Carol Boom of Yankton, SD;sons: Todd Noecker of Omaha,NE, David (Ann) Noecker of Lin-coln, NE, and Brian (Tanja)Noecker of Lincoln, NE; step-sons: Michael Block, JasonBlock, and Cory (Shannon)Block, all of Yankton, SD; daugh-

Parochial Grade School thenwent on to graduate from TaborHigh School in 1949. She mar-ried Leonard Cimpl on May 28,1951 at St. Wenceslaus CatholicChurch in Tabor.

Mildred was very involved inmany church, community, andcharitable activities in Tabor.She touched many lives throughher teaching of the BesedaDance which is performed eachyear at Czech Days.

She is survived by her hus-band, Leonard of Tabor; two

sons, Fr. Chuck Cimpl of SiouxFalls and Joe Cimpl of Tabor;one daughter, Sue (Mike) Stoll ofYankton; 4 grandchildren: SelinaCimpl of Kansas City, MO, Beth(Casey) Van Beek of Sioux Falls,Scott Stoll and Tyler Stoll, bothof Yankton; one sister, AnneShaw of Denver, CO.

Mildred is preceded in deathby her parents.

The third graders at Stewart School had their annual Novel Museum onMarch 19th in the school cafeteria. The third graders each read a book inthe Boxcar Children series. While reading the books the children partici-pated in many literacy activities. The culminating event for this unit wasthe Novel Museum. The children created projects based on their individ-ual Boxcar Children book. These projects were completed at home andbrought to school to be shared the day of the event. Thanks to all the par-ents who helped create such wonderful projects. Thanks also to the Stew-art School PTA for purchasing the books. The third graders were veryexcited to learn that the books were theirs to keep.

The Gayville-Volin School Dis-trict would like to proudly con-gratulate the following 11th gradestudents who were selected asrepresentatives to the 2013 SouthDakota Girls State program:Rachel Pokorney and VanessaRyken.

Girls and Boys State of SouthDakota are citizenship programsdesigned to train girls and boysfrom all over the state in theworkings of American govern-ment. High School juniors whoranked highly in their class anddemonstrated definite interest inAmerican government qualifiedto apply for the weeklong pro-gram. Local sponsors for the rep-resentatives include the GayvilleAmerican Legion Auxiliary, theGayville American Legion, andGayville Cortrust Bank. Thesesponsors pay the fee for studentrepresentatives so that they mayattend the program free ofcharge. Girls State will be heldMay 27 through June 1 on the

campus of The University ofSouth Dakota in Vermillion. Wecongratulate each of the repre-sentatives and hope that theyfind Girls State to be an excitinglearning experience.
